I see a lot of you guys can have up to 5 characters at a time, and it amazes me how some of you are able to keep muse with all of them. Right now, I'm struggling to stay afloat with 3 characters, and I can't bring myself to respond to private thread anymore. So, I'm curious, what are your secrets to staying sharp?
How do you guys maintain muse?

My muse fluctuates from time to time but i’m the type who wants to stay busy (thus why I have so many charries) but typically I use a ton of trial and error and try to make my characters feel varied and different; I like playing with different personality types.
Also having interesting plots or relationships going on boosts my muse but sometimes if I feel like there’s to much going on with one character I don’t want to touch them. I like a good balance.

definitely take a break from those private threads!
i feel like those are hella muse draining especially when there isnt a huge plot behind it
also, maybe try putting your character in positions that would make them uncomfortable/or just new situations all together
(perhaps also try AUs?)
& agreeing with Kedamono!

these are really great points! i'm gonna have to agree with taking a break from private threads altogether, as they're really not my area of expertise.
plots plots plots, that's definitely something that i needa work on for all three of my characters. they're all pretty static at the moment, which may explain why i'm not feeling really motivated with any of them. i've always found that whenever i have the energy, drawing my oc's gives me a boost in creativity as well. thank you both for sharing your thoughts!

i don’t retain muse-
it builds up into a clusterstorm that i let crash over until i’m drained
and then it disappears for 1-8 months, hiding from me like a coward

dear god if that ain't me right now ^^^

Personally, I often need to have an endgame in mind for my characters or else they'd fizz out really quickly. Even setting life goals that you want your character to achieve helps if you can't think of an endgame!
Having two or more characters in one group usually just flat-out kills my muse so I have them be involved in completely separate plots in order to avoid the situation where I'd have to interact with myself.

Dittoing what was said above.
For me, it's a lot of trial and error. I drop characters all the time just because I don't have muse for them. However, sometimes some of them really stick and I try my best to keep them active. Right now I just have two characters (and possibly a third on the way), and I'm really just focusing on developing plots for them that keep them active and fun to play.
Plots really keep characters alive for me. If they're just in the background doing nothing, then I'm not going to enjoy roleplaying them. However, if they're constantly engaging in dynamic relationships with other players' characters, getting involved in group-wide plots, individually developing plots, etc., then I really find those characters are the ones taking off.

tracking this so i can always look at it later. i swear to god that i can't keep up with 3 characters with absolutely no muse to go around. xd
