When Grace had said she was wanting to lose weight, he gave her a puzzled expression. Sure, her cheeks were a bit puffier and she had a slight bump to her stomach, but he thought she was beautiful the way she was. Though if she wanted to lose weight then he would support her, as long as it was in a healthy way.
Then she called the noisy teenagers on the other side of the diner "meatheads" and he decided he loved her even more.
"Peanut butter." He answered with a toothy grin. He used to have buck teeth and would be bullied for it, but then he got braces and it fixed them. Lucky for him, they took the braces off before high school started. He didn't want to start off school like that.
A shrill bell sounded, signaling the entrance of another person. Eric Howe strutted into the diner like he owned the place. He was a senior on the basketball team and was pretty popular with the ladies. He was one of those hyper-earnest over-achievers who couldn't understand why anyone would disagree with him about anything ever. Or so he had been told by his friends. They were his main source of basic information.
Eric walked over to Eddie's table and handed them a highlighter yellow paper each. They talked for a bit before he made his way toward the two of them. He had a pep in his step as he approached their booth.
Booker looked over the flyer and noticed it was for the schoolwide formal dance where the girls invited the boys. He had forgotten about it until now.
"So we went with a kind of space theme. Like, not science fiction-y, but more astronomy, all planets and stars and stuff." Eric said as he held up one of the flyers and pointed at it. "We're gonna cover all the pillars and the walls in black felt and use christmas lights for stars. It will be super cool."
Eric was smiling pretty proudly which made him think he had brought the idea to the student council himself. So Booker smiled up at him encouragingly.
"This is such a joke."
The words caused everyone to turn and look at Eddie. He was holding a flyer in his hands and Booker could smell the weed from where he sat. He wondered if just his friends were high or if he was too. Eddie slouched in the booth, looking uncharacteristically morose.
"What are you talking about, Eddie?" Eric was staring hard at him with his lips in a thin line.
"I mean, I'm pretty sure there are better things to care about other than just dances and football. I'd rather do something that actually matters in this world."
Eric was stomping toward Eddie and getting right up in his face. He was large and athletic and could probably beat the shit out of him.
"Like what?" He couldn't hide the frustration in his voice.
Eddie took a bite out of his slice of pizza and chewed loudly before speaking. "I don't know. Its just so messed up. Even at school, we have all these kids who are probably going to drop out at some point or at least not gonna go to college. Can't the student council do something about that instead?"
There was a long silence. Mavis was grinning from ear to ear and leaning more into the troublemaker.
"Totally, Eddie." She said before kissing his cheek.
Eric took a deep breath, but he didn't seem angry anymore. If anything, he seemed to agree with Eddie. "I will bring it to the council's attention on Wednesday."
With that, he spun around and left the diner. The bell chimed again. The waitress walked up to the pair and asked if they were ready to order.
"The, uh, burger, please."
