  • Stonekit | Darkclan | 3 moons | grey + amber eyes | plotting open

In the short amount of time that Stonekit had been alive, he had never experienced anything like this. Breathing was supposed to be easy, thoughtlessly rhythmic. His breathing caught inside his chest, causing a strange, dry sensation akin to being tickled deep inside. When he dared to breathe deep, it soon devolved into coughing. Stonekit loathed it. It hurt like when he first exposed his eyes to the sun's light, but worse. He had to do something about it.

The cave next to the nursery smelled strange. Not quite bad, per se. Just strange. Stonekit peeked in through the entrance, unsure of what to expect of medicine cats. Maybe they had special powers?

"Hello?" He asked hesitantly, stepping forward, "hurts to breathe! Don't like it!"

    MEERA

  • Ebonyrose did have special powers unlike her other denmates, given to her by the Dark Forest, the evil entities she had given her soul to. She had completed her warrior training under them, but that had all been for naught when Sunfeather had called her to be a medicine cat apprentice alongside her sister, Dawnpaw. The she-cat had been asleep in her den when a voice roused her from her sleep. She bared her teeth, prepared to lash out at whoever had disrupted her nap until she realized that they were asking for medical attention. She had not had much training yet, but Sunfeather and Dawnpaw were nowhere to be found, so she supposed she would deal with the issue to the best of her ability until someone showed up to aid her.

"Your lungs?" she inquired as she materialized from the shadows. Her black pelt caused her to blend in almost perfectly. At first, only her two amber eyes were visible in the darkness until the sunlight outlined the rest of her feminine form. She stood in front of Stonekit now, fully visible from the depths of the dark medicine den, holding herself with dignity and pride. "Let me have a listen to them." Really, she just was using the time to stall, but also to learn. She was going through the small list of herbs in her mind, trying to decipher what might help the young tom.

He wasn't sure what it was, but Ebonyrose made his fur stand on end. She wouldn't hurt him, he told himself. She was a medicine cat, and Jewelpelt said that meant she would help him. Stonekit trusted his mother, although it was difficult to when the other cat had seemingly materialised from thin air. Swallowing, he forced himself to lift his paws and move forwards, displeased with himself for freezing still.

At Ebonyrose's instruction, Stonekit took a deep breath. At first, it was fine. He enjoyed the air greedily for all of a second, then something in his throat shuddered. A sad, gravelly sort of deflating sound as he breathed out broke off into a cough that tasted somewhat metallic. It wasn't the worst wheeze in the world, but to a three moons old kit it was torture.

  • A smirk laced her pretty features when Ebonyrose sensed Stonekit's unease with her sudden presence. She was typically not malicious with kits as she was the rest of her Clanmates. There was a soft spot in her hardened heart for little ones, but that did not mean they were entirely immune to her ruthlessness and for some reason, Ebonyrose found herself wanting to have some fun with the young tom who was clearly uneasy around her.

However, first things first, she did have to treat him. As he prepared to take a deep breath, she lowered herself to have a listen, pressing her ear to his chest. As he took a deep breath, she could hear the unsettling sound in his lungs and he broke into a fit of coughing. "It sounds like you're getting sick," she told him. "It's probably kittencough, but I'll instruct Sunfeather to keep an eye on you when she comes back. Now, come with me. I have some herbs that will help you." Without waiting for him, Ebonyrose disappeared into the darkness of her den again.

Stonekit hesitated for a moment, watching Ebonyrose sink into the darkness of the medicine cat den again. She seemed to fade to nothingness inside it, becoming as visible as air. The dark had always seemed so warm and comforting, but right now it was chillingly uninviting. A heartbeat passed before he finally followed her into the strange smelling den, keen to be cured of his sickness. Stonekit wanted to breathe without feeling as if he were hacking up a lung. He craved it. Air seemed in such short supply lately that it felt his head spinning and slowed him down. It was the worst.
