— a gray tabby could just barely be seen darting through the alleys of the city, the smell of fear still emanating off of his pelt. however, that smell slowly disappeared as the tom realized he was no longer being chased by the dog that was at his tail only minutes before. he stopped to catch his breath.
it felt like he had been on the run forever, even though only a few sunrises had passed since his housecat home had burned to the ground. he wasn't troubled by the event. in fact, he took it as an escape into the outside world he so desperately wanted to be a part of all his life. his owners were... nice, he supposed, but he wasn't grieving the loss. what he was troubled by was the pang of hunger in his stomach and no clear place to take shelter and sleep. eating dry food endlessly all his life wasn't exactly teaching him how to hunt or even dig for scraps. the burns on his hind leg weren't helping. he had relied on instinct for days, and it was only getting him so far.
his body was weary, but after catching his breath, the tom faced his hazy green eyes forward and started walking through more of the maze-like alleyways, trying to find anywhere to take refuge. it wasn't until he was a few pawsteps too far in a certain alley that he scented cat... practically everywhere. he stood still, unsure of whether to run away or investigate. perhaps these cats could help him, just like the cats in his dreams... but somehow, the atmosphere felt uncertain and dangerous. the tom was about to change his mind and leave, until a pang of hunger hit him again and he realized this was his only chance to get help, even if slim. he stood his ground, and decided to call out.
"...hello?"
