  • CHASING A COSMIC CONSTELLATION IN THE STARS

☆•° well, it hadn't been planned. not that she planned much in her life; improvising was so much more fun. but she hadn't at all intended on winding up on feral cat territory. she had known of their existence, of course; all the neighbourhood cats knew of the wild groups out there, and they sounded pretty awesome. she wouldn't lie. problem was that they were made out to be so fierce and dangerous that there was just no approaching them. that was before she had come home to an empty house.

now, starra didn't know what to do with herself. she had spent a few nights playing the innocent, helpless kitten in the gardens of her friends' housefolk, but it seemed that nobody was interested in taking in a stray. she looked like a stray now, having lost some weight without a constant food supply. she couldn't catch a mouse to save her life, and her collar had been ripped off just the other day after getting caught on something sharp in one of the housefolk's rubbish skips in an alleyway.

the former kittypet didn't know who else to turn to. she spent most nights on a cold street, under whatever shelter she could find. a box one night, a thin rag the next. the stars were comforting, though, the one thing that stayed the same. and it was the same sky that shone down on the feral cats who survived out there, so they couldn't be that bad. they knew what they were doing, anyway, living without housefolk, so she figured it was worth a try to explain her situation. she was probably dying anyway, so what was the worst that could happen?

starra raised her nose from the ground, certain that the thick scent meant she had crossed a border of some sort. she wasn't sure what awaited her here, but surely it was better than spending all day seeking food scraps and shelter from the colds of winter. she fluffed out her spotted fawn coat to brace against a breeze, sitting and curling her tail over her paws. and so she waited.

  • Wanting to build little structures out of twigs, Blossomkit had been collecting them all day long around the camp. Just as her friend Chillykit did, she lifted her nose in the air, just in case a predator or enemy cat were to come in. Right around the apprentice's den, her nose picked up something foreign, like a kitten but not like one of her denmates. Excited, she let her nose take her to the edge of the border, where she reluctantly needed to stop tracking. Luckily, it wasn't long before her mellow green eyes had spotted a fawn-colored coat among the slush and snow. "Hey there!" The young tortoiseshell hollered. "My name is Blossomkit, and you've found WindClan! Who are you?"

☆•° startled by the sudden mewling of a kitten, starra tensed slightly when the little creature appeared out of seemingly nowhere. she felt a pang of protectiveness upon laying soft hazel eyes on the tortoiseshell, who seemed awful young to be braving such conditions all alone. out of all of those who she had been expecting to meet here, a kit hadn't come to mind. that being said, the little thing was much more approachable and friendly than what she had expected.

the scruffy-looking bengal brightened up quickly in the presence of blossomkit, grinning widely at her. "hi blossomkit!" she greeted the windclanner cheerily, tucking the name of this group into the back of her mind for future reference and suppressing her curiosity for a moment. "i'm starra. a... a loner right now, actually." it was slightly embarrassing to admit. a few weeks back her life had been comfortable and warm, but she supposed she wasn't really a housecat anymore.

  • "A loner, huh?" Blossomkit's ears flicked with concern. "You might want to move on, then. We've been kind of on edge lately, and warriors tend to get kind of suspicious about loners." Then her voice grew hopeful. "Hey, you wouldn't happen to have come from the Twoleg city, would you? My best friend was taken there. His name is Chillykit, he's all fluffy and light gray with stripes..." She sighed, but knew she had to go on. "I've really been worrying about him. The elders...they've told me terrible things Twolegs do to cats." She stopped to look behind her, wondering if any other warriors were coming to see who she was talking to. "In fact, we've even had another cat, Softrose, come home with her tongue missing! Isn't that awful?"

bigdiamons_by_cat_frog-dct1gnb.png Blossomkit bigger friend stood behind her, scanning the loner. Were they frim another clan? No, they didn’t smell like that. A kittypet? Diamondpaw understood Blossomkit’s excitement, but the couldn’t be sure. “Well, you may want to join us. We’re one big loving family, but you need to pull your weight, housecat,” the snow-furred molly meowed towards the newcomer.

☆•° starra pondered the kitten's warnings for a moment, ears lowering with slight disappointment. she had come all this way just to be told no by a cute kitten? this hadn't been planned, but rejection was not an option. if they were suspicious about loners, maybe a former housecat would sound less intimidating.

"i think i'll try my luck," she assured the tortie with a bright smile. the kit's next words really caught her attention. she'd never used the phrase twolegs before, but it didn't take a vast intelligence to figure out what was implied. "i am, yeah!" she replied, brightening up instantly. "but no, i don't think i've seen your friend. sorry." the fawn-coloured feline nearly flinched to hear the following statements. "that sounds terrible! all the - twolegs i've ever met have been so nice!" well. until her housefolk up and left her.

starra's ears pricked as she heard another one of the feral group approach, this one with a surprisingly well-kept white coat. she beamed at the stranger, who looked a little older than her tortie friend. join? that was definitely not something that she had been considering, but... the thought remained open. an option. "pull my weight?" the femme echoed with a laugh. "are you calling me lazy?"

bigdiamons_by_cat_frog-dct1gnb.png Diamondpaw rudely grinned. She didn’t really have anything against kittypets, but she felt protective and maybe even wanted to show off in front of her younger friend. “Well, kittypets like you are supposed to be. Oir system is unknown for you so just letting you know that you’ll get some scars and will have to work for your food as a clan cat,” she put an expression on the ‘clan’ word to mark that the cat probably didn’t even know what a clan was. And humble her down. And show her in wild, there is no time for joking. “Anyways, what’s your name? I mean, you’ll need to change it anyways, but whatsoever. I’m Diamondpaw.”

  • Eaglespirit was next to appear, brows lifting at seeing Diamondpaw acting rudely and immaturely. After all, there was a delicate balance to this, and while it was not good to just let anyone in and you had to make them very aware the decision they're taking, it was also not good to just try to run off another who could be a good warrior. They didn't want to take in a weakness, but didn't want to drive away a strength, and it wasn't apparently if this kittypet was one or the other. Still, he wanted to see the other's reaction to the words, and and such just sat back and waited before he would speak.

☆•° starra grinned confidently in return. well, it wasn't every day she got called lazy, and she wasn't sure whether to laugh or raise an eyebrow. humour was probably the better go-to response in this situation, not being all that sure whether or not these cats had plans to eat her. so she beamed widely at the knowledgeable windclanner, prepared to happily inform her of her lack in laziness. bengals were known for their energy and she was no exception.

"i think 'supposed to be' and 'actually are' are two very different things," she pointed out playfully, black-tipped tail flicking with mischief. maybe she was getting a bit reckless, but she didn't have much to lose. "and i'm not technically a housecat anymore. been living on the streets for - uh - a good while, anyway." she paused, whiskers twitching in thought. "and i'm failing miserably. i figured you lot would know a bit more about how to not die."

that was what had led her to the border in the first place. round ears pricked slightly as another clan cat entered the scene. at last, an adult! now her fate would really be decided. was she going to be mauled or given a hand?

the mink bengal glanced back to diamondpaw as the apprentice continued, realising that the white she-cat hadn't heard her introduction earlier. hazel eyes widened a fraction when it was uttered that a name change would be necessary, but she shrugged that off for later. "my name's starra. well, i mean, that's what my housefolk called me." she hadn't ever considered naming herself. and what her mother would have called her, she didn't have a clue! wow, maybe this clan business was an opportunity to reinvent herself. or at least her name. if anyone thought the wild could humble her down, they had another thing coming.

bigdiamons_by_cat_frog-dct1gnb.png Diamondpaw's strict face melted. Why not another friend? "Well, if Jasperstar approves, saving stray kittens is always a good thing," she answered, and sat down, slowly waving her tail.

  • "Indeed!" Blossomkit had kept quiet since Starra responded to her. "So...that means you were a loner, right? That's what we call cats not belonging to a Clan but not belonging to Twolegs. We have to hunt a lot to survive, lots of rabbits, and we have to go on these things called patrols to protect the Clan borders."

  • CHASING A COSMIC CONSTELLATION IN THE STARS

☆•° starra beamed as it seemed she had convinced the clan cat to loosen up a bit and smile. she licked a paw coolly, swiping it over an ear as the other pricked, listening. she raised a fictional eyebrow at the phrase "stray kitten", though didn't remark on it. a fight for another day. if they wanted to think of her an innocent little kit for the moment, she could let that slide. maybe it would give her the upper hand when she strut her stuff further down the line.

the bengal smiled at blossomkit as the littler of the two addressed her. "yeah, i guess i... was? a loner. does that mean i'm in?" she grinned mischievously. this felt a bit like joining a secret club, but the longer she considered it the more she enjoyed humoring this thought of community. "do i get like, a name? one like you lot have, i mean." by the stars did she love the night sky, but she had to admit her name was a little dry. it could be more interesting.

  • "Sure!" Blossomkit yapped, her tail high. "But you're probably not gonna get a warrior name right away. I think usually joiners are made apprentices so they can get used to clan life. So you're name's probably gonna end in 'paw'." Then the kit began to study Starra's features, seeing if there was anything there to base a name around. Just like her, the guest's fur was covered in lovely dapples, like a cluster of acorns on fresh mud. "Hm..." She hummed.
