i think you're writing is just fine, dark! But if you're wanting to improve ahh, i can find some writing websites and tips for you? I'm not very good at giving out tips myself other than like,, having the character interact with their environment, interact with others, fleshing out their morals and then having situations where said morals come into play or where the characters hand is forced. That's all,, very vague but ahh, it's what i can think of.

Double post, i just saw the rest of your post i'm sorry for skipping that but. if you really want them to get into the society, have them interact with the society itself! Like,, most groups have certain themes around them but aren't really ever pushed or explored aside from events and stuff (myself included, i do this sometimes lol). I'm gonna use the sanctuary as an example here since we're in its chat and it's the group i know best nowadays but- have your character take note of the wisps, watch them playing around - how does it make them feel? Are they scared? Curious? Do they chase down the wisps? Do the wisps take an interest in them? Does your character take an interest in the sanctuary's religion? Do they want to know more about it? Do they plant gardens to please the spirits? Do they make sacrifices for the gaia? So on and so forth. Or does your character not believe in ghosts? Or just not in the religion itself? Do they think everyone around here is nuts? Are they the ones that question it, or the ones that avoid spirit bonding sessions and gaia ceremonies because they just don't care for it, at all?

honestly those are solid tips, and prompts.
