  • Cam there be a black-backed jackal and fox hybrid? I mean, even if there are no records, they are both canines and maybe can hybrid? Would they be considered an unrealistic hybrid and their pups would need to be sterile?

  • I'm sorry - it would not be realistic for a black-backed jackal and any kind of true fox to hybridize. They are both canids (in the family Canidae), but they are not both canines (in the group Canini within Canidae) - the jackal is a canine, but foxes are vulpines (in the group Vulpini within Canidae), and in general canines and foxes can't hybridize at all.

(There have been, very rare, recorded cases in which a coyote or a dog bred with a red fox and did produce offspring, but in every case the pups were either stillborn, or died soon after birth.)
