Introduction

Long ago in a particularly brutal winter, the Lake Superior froze over, allowing wolves and moose to travel across the ice to inhabit a piece of land called Isle Royale. Soon the two became the dominant species, falling into a unique single predator-single prey relationship, upon which the entire island's ecosystem relied. However as the temperature of the Earth rises, the lake no longer freezes over, isolating the wolf population, leading to them dying off as the moose population experiences a boom in return. Soon enough the moose will destroy their food source, and experience a collapse, and after years of ignoring the problem the government has finally approved of a plan to release a handful of wolves to attempt to avoid such a disastrous end. But only time will tell if their efforts were too late...

Summary

Resident The two current residents are a parent and pup pair, who, after the death of the other parent, have taken to hunting squirrels, hares, as well as the occasional bird, although both have had experience with hunting moose. Even if the other parent had not passed, this would have been the remaining one's last pup as they are getting up in their years and having trouble keeping up. With fall coming the pair know that soon the only prey available will be moose, but they are far from being capable of taking one down, so what happens when they catch the scent of other wolves?

Newcomer The newcomers are composed of young wolves having recently left their birth packs or have had some trouble establishing their own, and have been taken to be released on the island in hopes that they will survive and start hunting the moose. Most have not hunted, or perhaps even experienced, moose, but as winter draws nearer they will soon be forced to take on the near impossible task, but perhaps if they had some help?

Setting

Situated between the United States and Canada is a lake called Lake Superior, and on that lake is a small island referred to as Isle Royale. This is where our story takes place. It's both a national park and recreational area, although it is largely untouched outside of a hundred sixty miles of hiking trail and a singular cabin, and as such there are rarely human-animal conflicts. The island is composed of deciduous forests and is home to all sorts of bird life from the surrounding mainland, as well as moose, snowshoe hares, beavers, red foxes, red squirrels, river otters, and, of course, wolves.

The current wolves' territory stretches from about Lake Richie to Mount Saginaw, and from the coast to Green Ridge. (bottom side of the island nearer the middle, past Siskiwit Lake). The new arrivals will be dropped off closer to Sisikiwit Lake in between Intermediate Lake and Lake Whittlesey a couple hundred yards apart a decent distance from the current resident's territory.

PERSONALITY to start with, you don't get to be eleven years old with several successful litters, while hunting moose if you're soft. in one regard tuktu is deeply nurturing, being just as willing, if not more so, as any other mother wolf to put her own life in danger for the sake of her pups'. a good comparison could be drawn between her and shanti in the jungle book (1967) in that not only would she sooner face a tiger than give up one of her own, but her ferocity at the very idea is enough to make most have second thoughts, if not back down. however she has a tendency to coddle her pups, even with nanouk being four years old she still doesn't like to see him go out on his own, and prefers to lead in any potentially dangerous situation. at the same time she understands the importance of teaching her pups independence and how to survive without her, and is a stern teacher, as any wrong move can end in death. in regards to hunting it seems as though her name was a blessing, her parents having taught her well she is alert and observant, both skill and practice making her quick to pick out the weakest link and she has almost a decade of experience in using different strategies to take down moose. while in her youth she prided herself on her endurance, and durability she has since changed tactics in that she is now more patient, and cautious, but when she strikes, she strikes well. with hares she's very lenient, but she's painfully aware of the danger of moose and as such takes a dominant role, even if she's begun to have trouble keeping up in the long run. socially she comes off as very gruff, and distant, seemingly disinterested in outsiders, but open to talk, and willing to compromise. she doesn't like making connections with outsiders as she's seen many die an early death in her life time, but when you get through the rough exterior she's very caring, nearly as much as she is towards her kin. however she is very assertive, and doesn't take kindly to disrespect.

APPEARANCE she's about average as far as general size goes, although she's got a notable solidity and regality in the way in which she moves, similar in character to a marble statue. her dense fur hugs her extremities, lengthening about her core, but especially her around her ruff. her pelt was once composed of dark grey, black, and tan fur, but has since not only gone through the typical pattern of white phasing, but she has begun to go silver as well. her face is long, and triangular, with a broad muzzle and bright yellow eyes that bore rather than embrace.

   — scent similar to tree sap, only heavier, almost musky with a slight sharp note

OTHER her mate had suffered a leg injury the year prior, and had barely managed to pull through another winter, but has since passed. with her other pups gone, she has come to grow more protective of her singular surviving pup.

Jaybird I want to give everyone a chance to make a character before allowing anyone to make a second. And I'm letting it slide, but the photo is of a wolfdog (which happens to be the focus of another rp I'll be making soon).

Everyone Just a heads up, I'd prefer there not to be anymore exceptionally large wolves (perhaps a female, but no more males). I'd also like to say pack dynamics won't be the standard rp style (alpha, beta, warrior, hunter, omega), instead more of a loose hierarchy based on social dominance, hunting skill, and leadership.
