    jiwoon park

this is so stupid, the young man could only think as he grumpily finished packing up his clothes, packing that he had supposed to have been done by now. his mother had told him to do it last night, but did jiwoon do it?

    hell no.

    ★ ★ ★

"hey, jiwoon, are you done packing?" his mother spoke in korean, jiwoon glancing up from where he was fiddling with his phone. "the bus is coming to pick you up early tomorrow, you know. you have all your clothes together? i washed your favourite hoodie, i know you'll probably want to wear it."

dark eyes turned back to the screen on his phone. jiwoon was currently ranting to keegan about having to go to this stupid camp, the other guy giving him his condolences about jiwoon having to miss an entire summer just to go to some sort of 'juvenile rehab'.

    "no." he answered his mother.

"don't forget about it, jiwoon," she warned him gently, giving him a tiny smile. jiwoon didn't see it, still reading the text keegan had sent him. "no procrastinating, okay honey?"

    "yes, mum."

    ★ ★ ★

he totally wasn't regretting it. maybe if he took long enough and missed the bus, he wouldn't have to go to this camp. his phone had been confiscated before he'd been sent to bed last night, jiwoon already feeling odd without having it anymore.

"woonie!" he heard his mother call, a small frown, laced with disgust, coming to his face when the nickname registered in his brain. "i made pancakes!"

"great, mum," jiwoon called back, finishing shoving everything into his bag. he'd decided to use a large duffel bag, deciding that an actual suitcase would be a hassle but his backpack wouldn't be large enough. a nice middle ground. he didn't remember if bringing your own food was allowed, but he'd bought bags and bags of candy and shoved it all to the bottom of his bag, messily piling his clothes on top. he zipped it up with little difficulty, swinging the bag over his shoulder and slowly stomping to the front door so he could dump his bag with his shoes.

as he entered the kitchen, the sweet smell of pancakes attacking him instantly. he didn't have much time to relish it before his mother marched over, planting a sloppy kiss to his cheek and knocking his glasses (he'd decided to put his contacts in before he left) askew. "mum!" he protested, adjusting his glasses. if his mother had seen how his lips pursed with anger, his eyes narrowing at her, she didn't comment on it.

"eat up, pumpkin," she chirped, ushering him towards the table where a welcoming pile of pancakes was waiting for him. as jiwoon took a seat and quickly dug in, she left to go wake up his father, obviously wanting a tearful goodbye.

later, once jiwoon had eaten his fill (plus some, his mother had kept putting more and more in front of him, not letting him leave until he'd eaten enough to satisfy her) and put his contacts in, he stood outside clad in his favourite hoodie - fresh from the wash, like his mother had promised - and, obviously, a pair of his ripped jeans. he'd pushed his sleeves up, exposing his forearms to the early morning light. getting some vitamin d at this ungodly hour, he thought, despite this even being a little later than he had to wake up for school.

the bus rolled up to his house (smallish, but very nice looking) as he'd been expecting and the teenager's lips curved with distaste. he got onto the bus, trying to look as intimidating as he could with his rounded face and gentle eyes, traits from his mother, but revelling in the fact that he'd at least gotten to a decent height. thanks, dad, he thought, plopping down in an seat near the back of the bus, not paying any mind to anyone sitting around him. no way am i sitting at the front.

his hair was messy, not having bothered to get rid of the serious bedhead, and by the way he flopped in his seat it probably gave someone the impression that he was already so done with this camp. and he'd only just boarded the bus. to get there.

    jasper larocque

daniel had been the one to wake his younger brother up, the nineteen-year-old giving jasper an almost-sad smile as he pulled a sleepy jasper out of bed. "time to wake up, buddy," jasper heard him say in his foggy-headed, tired stupor. "i was supposed to wake you up a while ago, the parental units are going to have my head." he added.

"but i don't want to go," jasper whined, letting out a small yelp as he was hit in the face with a shirt.

a laugh was heard from his dresser, daniel rifling through the clothes. "red flannel?" he offered his brother, holding up said piece of clothing. it was sailing through the air as soon as jasper nodded his head, stretching his arms above his head.

"thanks," he said to daniel, reaching down to grab a pair of pants off of the floor. he didn't even have to look up to know that daniel was pursing his lips, shaking out the pants before looking up at dan with a broad grin on his face.

"now get out while i change, pervert."

with a roll of his eyes, daniel left the room, lifting up his wrist to flash his bracelet as he did so. jasper did the same, an identical one on his own wrist. as much as he hated being compared to both of his brothers, he got along with both of them really well; he loved them to the moon and back.

after he'd changed into his clothes, he dragged himself out of his bedroom, grabbing the backpack that he'd left by his door last night. he really only packed a couple of outfits, plus the necessities. oh, and his plush panda bear. he grabbed benji from his bed, shoving the plushie into his already-full bag and zipping it up. benji had been his favourite ever since his grandmother gave it to him, when he was barely a year old. sure, benji might be a bit of an odd name for a panda, especially when it's named by a small child, but jasper couldn't imagine it with any other name.

his father was probably already at work, he realized as he trudged through the dark house, hearing voices in the dining room. kayden and daniel bickering over their food, something that made jasper feel homesick, and he hadn't even left for camp yet.

he joined the two of them, setting his backpack between his legs. he didn't think he could eat right now, he'd grab an apple on the way out of the house. "hey, jas," kayden spoke up. "i'm here to see you off. you'll survive, i promise." it was a bit of an unspoken rule between the three of them, that they didn't talk about what had happened recently.

"you might look a bit bedraggled and exhausted right now," daniel teased, reaching over to ruffle jasper's hair, "but you're one tough cookie."

a small smile ghosted across jasper's face, looking between his brothers. "thanks, kayd. thanks, dan."

he was met with a wide grin from both of his brothers, kayden saying, "i'm going to miss you, little brother."

    "so will i," daniel added.

    "i'll miss you guys, too."

    ★ ★ ★

mother had emerged from her bedroom to say a fleeting goodbye, telling jasper to keep his nose clean before leaving again to have a bath. kayden and daniel had stuck by him up until the bus came, giving him a big hug in the front room before guiding him out of the door, giving him another hug before finally letting him get on the bus.

face flushed with slight embarassment, wringing his hands together nervously. he boarded the bus, feeling self-conscious about himself. he wondered how this looked, a boy getting on the bus, his brothers watching from the steps up to the front door of a huge house, probably looking like he was about to throw up.

oh, god, please don't let him do that.

none of the seats were empty, jasper sucking in a deep breath as he stared determinedly at the ground. he walked down the aisle of the bus, picking a random seat and, without looking at the person already sat in it, sat down in the seat and placing his bag between his legs, still staring straight ahead of him.

    Jasper Collins

He could hear the oven beeping from the other room. Jasper was rushing around his bedroom, which was conveniently very close to the downstairs kitchen. Never had he been organized for trips, and has always procrastinated in packing until the last second. This wasn't any different. The teen was shoving clothes into his suitcase and rummaging for random objects he lost such as a flashlight and his favorite pair of shoes. Unfortunately, they weren't hiking shoes so he wouldn't be able to wear them a lot during the camp from what he assumed. But then again, they wouldn't be easily ruined either.

Growing with annoyance, Jasper Collins ran across the glossy wooden floor with his socks, turning off the timer and oven before taking out a batch of brownies his little sister helped him bake. He never really enjoyed baking, instead favored cooking. But it was close enough. His father was still sleeping on the couch, and May was probably sitting on the stairs and staring at her phone. Jasper had really raised her more than his parents since they had been away for so long. However, the only benefit from his father getting fired was that he had time to babysit May. The only person he would miss would be May. She was barely even a teenager, and what Jasper did best was worry. Even if their father stayed behind with her, the teen still bit his nails in paranoia.

The bus would arrive in less than 20 minutes. But it didn't feel like enough time. He took his school backpack, throwing out his binders and notebooks onto his bed, and shoving in stuff like snacks and candy and books. The only time he read was when he was bored.

He held onto the suitcase's extended handle with one hand, the other hand swinging the backpack over his back by the strap. His drowsy father stood up, walked over, pat his back with a brief farewell and went back to napping. But his sister greeted him by the front door, putting in the small effort to opening it for him. "Bye." she sounded, her voice quiet as usual.

"I'll see you in a couple of months," he smiled while tying his hair back into a bun so it wouldn't bother him on the long drive. "Remember- don't bother with the frosting, we don't have enough powdered sugar. Just sprinkle the brownies with it instead if you prefer a topping." His sister only smiled a very small smile then went on her tiptoes to embrace him.

Struggling to keep the backpack on his back and not swing back to hit either of them, he hugged her back. All was left was a, "I'll miss you" then the click of a door locking behind him.

Once Jasper stepped onto the bus, he looked around. Maybe there weren't very many, but unfamiliar faces were scattered far apart along the rows. He walked through the isle, dealing with his luggage and sitting near the back of the public transporter. He liked the window seat better. If his peers from school sat next to him in middle school field trips, then he would probably have memories of playing "sweet or sour" on the highway. But now he busied himself with reading license plates from strangers' cars and identifying the ones that came from other states.

Aleksander Dean Jordanson was sitting on the mattress, scrolling through his phone before it was left behind for the majority of the summer. His duffle bag was sitting at the foot of his bed, closed and containing neatly folded clothes and the general needs for surviving. Such as 3 months worth of wheat thins, prescriptions, face wash, concealer, and other needs for perfect hygiene. His sister was already at the camp, preparing. He was aware of the humiliating events that could occur from her being his counselor. Rarely were the siblings seen in public, but in their own homes she would tease and embarrass him constantly. Now if he could imagine it happening before the eyes of the fellow peers. The teen, who was basically an adult, thought the coming year of college would be the first time he had spent more than a week away from home. The only reason he was accepted was because he was forced to attend the correctional camp.

He could hear the clanging of pots and pans from downstairs, assuming his mother was in the kitchen. Which was rare- Aleksander was 98% of the time the one cooking for everyone. He just hoped with him gone that she wouldn't just put a Costco pizza into the oven or stir up some bought mac&cheese, but would eat a decently cooked dinner each night. That she wouldn't spend the entire time watching sad romance movies and drinking cheap wine. Without his supervision, Alek didn't know what would happen.

Throughout the time he awaited for the bus to arrive, he reflected on the past year. He had no regrets. Other than letting himself be caught. He'd be fine without his phone, without alcohol... but what he couldn't stand would be that they would be outside. In the sun. The burning sun. Or in the lake of bacteria. Sure, nature was pretty. But the pessimistic teen would not let that bloody burning sun give him any sunburns. He vowed to himself that he would avoid every chance of his pristine, pale complexion being tanned in the slightest.

Then again... hope wasn't completely lost. He wouldn't be alone in the process. No, he wasn't talking about his sister... But Kurtis. He'd be there too. They were made sure of it on the day in the police station. That's what he looked forward to. Oh, he was also allowed to bring his pet tarantula and python...

Aleksander gathered his bags, turning his phone off all the way and dropping it on the bed. He fixed the collar of his dark gray jean jacket which had white stars on it: it was of course his favorite piece of clothing. His sock-less feet slipped into a black pair of Vans on his way out the door of his bedroom. Downstairs he went, the aroma of cooked vegetables and shredded chicken spreading throughout the first floor of the house. His mother stood over the stove, her black yet graying hair tied back into a messy bun while in lazy clothes.

"I'm on my way out." he informed her, his deep and tired voice resonating. His mother turned off the stove and walked over. Her slim and frail hands found their way to either side of his cheeks. She leaned up and kissed his forehead.

"Don't worry, you'll have fun." she said with a slightly wrinkled smile.

"That's not what I'm necessarily concerned about..." he muttered honestly. She was silent for a moment.

"I'll be fine too." Alek's lips moved to the side in doubt.

"I'll see you in like 3 months." he kissed his mother's cheek once she embraced him and walked him to the door. She probably waved to him when he was looking away.

Soon enough, Aleksander Jordanson was boarding the bus, walking with one foot in front of the other to the very back seat next to the window. When he sat down, he felt the cold and metallic glass and looked through it to only find the front door to his broken house closed. He looked back to his folded hands in his lap, keeping to himself throughout the portion of the ride he'd sit alone.
