btdubbs I’m completely making up the history of Portugal from what I read about pirates in the 1500s lol pls dont roast me.

full name: Eugenio de Souza

name meaning: “Eugenio” is Portuguese for “Eugene,” meaning well-born. Though not a popular name during this time period, his parents believed that giving their son a name with a bountiful meaning, would correlate with his future and bring prosperity. De Souza is a common Portuguese name, symbolizing the common-folk of Portugal surrounding the 1500s, who went through various economic droughts. Because of his struggle growing up without money, Eugenio lead a life of piracy.

He is very set in his beliefs, and if someone does not abide by them, he will let them know why they are absolutely wrong and will go by any means to convince them that they are the lowest of the low. He is extremely religious and follows Christianity. His personal views, that may or may not tie in with his religion, are that homosexuality is a sin and women are worth less than men in typical “masculine” roles of power. history: Eugenio was born out of wedlock in Santarem, Portugal, to a common “whore,” as he refers to her now. His childhood was — for lack of better word— rough. He and his mother were “movers.” At the time, considered “gypsies,” although we know now the true meaning of that word. By no means was Eugenio’s upbringing that of a child’s today. For instance, one of many issues he faced was his family’s financial insecurity. The only source of income, or spare cash, was his mother’s “clients.” If she didn’t have a job, then they didn’t have supper. He never did understand why his mother, who he claims he doesn’t even remember the name of, was so set on selling her body rather than doing trade or travel or business or labour— or anything other than what she was doing. But he still loved her. After all, she was his mother, and he was her beloved son. The son of a gypsy. Around the time that Eugenio turned 5 years old, the Catholic Church had heard news of what was going on in Santarem (for it was not just his mother doing this kind of work). They rode in, and “rescued” the kids forced to live with the shame of what their parents were doing. Since then, Eugenio was taught to detest his mother. In Church, he would be teased by fellow classmates of the upper class, looked down upon by Sunday School teachers, and even the religious figures he looked up to oh so much. It was ingrained in him to detest where he came from. Eugenio was raised in the Catholic Church from 5-14 years old. He gained affinity and a sense of community with Catholicism. Throughout his life at the church, or in “foster homes” where he stayed, helping other families by doing chores and what-nots, his mother had religiously gone after him, but only when he was fourteen did his mother see him again. To her dismay, when she spotted her son out and about, making petty cash from labour-intensive activities, and fell to his feet, all that corrupted his once loving heart was disgust and embarrassment. He shoved her away, told her he never wanted to see her again, and that was that.

When Eugenio was 15, his mother died of smallpox. He went on living his life as a Good Samaritan, for he had only heard the news when he turned 20. He had learned, that even after he committed to saintly duties, or classic civilianism, doing good deeds and honorable work, the economy and the rich came to bite him in the ass, and he finally understood that all money is dirty money, and you have to play dirty to win. Since his early twenties, Eugenio has settled for piracy— it was only logical , considering that he grew up port-side. And since then, his neglect of the mother he had burdens him. Eugenio’s mother has become his biggest insecurity and his biggest regret in life that he chooses to omit.
