    APPEARANCE — *+:☽

    ( domestic cat )

    — blue shorthair with green eyes

    — It's clear that Spider was destined from birth to become a prey-hunter. His long legs and lithe frame might look gangly on someone else, but he wears them with crisp elegance and easy familiarity. It's clear that he is comfortable in his body. Who wouldn't be, when the body is one of such grace? Constant work and the rough lifestyle of a tribecat has kept him trim, although often, especially in the winter months, there is a slight hollowness to him that bespeaks a lack of proper nutrition. He has a short, bristly coat of grey fur: rather plain in appearance, his pelt isn't going to win him any prizes. Although his face is round rather than angular, his jaw is prominent. His eyes, too, are rounded, and a murky green in color, like the depths of a swampy pond.

    HISTORY — *+:☽

    ( 0 - 7 moons )

    — Spider was born in the Tribe or Rushing Water to two doting parents. His mother, Lily, had been a kittypet who left her home to join the tribe after she fell in love with Spider's father, Smoke. The stigma of his less than pure parentage, as expressed by those who disliked outsiders, followed Spider throughout his childhood, and he often ended up in fights with the offspring of those who thought that, because he had kittypet blood, he was less a tribe cat than they were. This bothered Spider's parents to no end, but they were powerless to stop it.

When he was just a week shy of his 6 month birthday, Spider got into an argument with his chief antagonist, a tom half a moon older than he was. Flush with anger, the argument quickly escalated into an all out brawl, and by the time the dust had settled, he was bleeding from multiple cuts. His opponent wasn't as lucky: somehow, amidst the chaos, he'd been blinded in one eye. Spider was horrified and resolved to keep out of trouble. His claws, he vowed, would only be used to kill prey, not other cats.

    ( 8 - 13 moons )

    — Due to the fight, Spider was barred from advancing to the rank of to-be for an extra moon. Once the punishment was over, he was allowed to join his age group in training. Keeping his vow would not be difficult: he had been selected to train as a prey-hunter instead of a cave-guard, and likely would never need to get into altercations with other cats. He was paired with a tough yet firm mentor, Leaf that Peeks through Snow, who instilled in him the value of his role. Prey-hunters have an important job, she would explain, and it isn't right to let cats go hungry because someone decided to goof off. He learned the worth of hard work from her.

During training, he was often paired with a white femme called Frost in Morning Grass for hunting exercises. She was a kindly, if stubborn, cat, and although under other circumstances he might have enjoyed her company, he always felt awkward around her: it had been her brother whom he had blinded as a kit. One day after training, Frost confronted him about the hostility she perceived emanating from him, and he realized that she didn't hold the incident against him. Following that conversation, they didn't become best friends, but he found it easier to interact with her.

    ( 14 - current )

    — Finally, Spider was finished training and was confirmed as a full prey-hunter. He celebrated the fact with his parents. During the first moon after he became a prey-hunter, Spider found that it was always easier to hunt when he was in a group with Frost: they had trained together so often as to-bes that he could nearly interpret her movements before she signaled them. Since they worked together well, they were often placed together on hunting patrols, and slowly grew closer.

Eventually, Spider realized that he loved Frost, and was over the moon to discover that she felt the same way about him. When he found out that she was pregnant with his kits, life seemed like it couldn't get any better. Frost went into labor on a stormy night when Spider was 17 moons old. Although she was young and seemed healthy, something went wrong during delivery, and Frost died after only one kit had been born. Overcome with grief, Spider was barely able to make sure that his daughter had been born healthy; he spent the next two weeks engulfed in his own misery until he was finally told to snap out of it. He managed to pull himself together, and since then has devoted his time to the tribe and to his daughter, Night of Stormy Gales. He became something resembling a workaholic, always on the move so that he could outrun his inner pain.
