i'm coming straight for the castle—
an introduction.
the kingdom of dewmire. it's a relatively famous name, with the world's current largest castle being the forechester palace located in the heart of the land, where the king and his family reside. the overall terrain of the land is majestic, withholding things such as unicorns and small dragons and what-not under their own version of the black forest; picture-esque views everywhere you turn, like you'd see right out of a story book. the overlying towns and villages are small but powerful, all close-knit communities that praise one man: king roulant.
king roulant has always been seen as a man with passion. he felt everything with every bone in his body, something that many wanted in a king. his own father had been stoic, and often was seen as lacking empathy and being as dull as a wooden plank to the citizens of dewmire. king roulant, though? king roulant was different. in fact, many of those living in dewmire did not even realize king roulant was still alive until suddenly he came back out, fifteen years of being hid by his father due to something the boy could not control: the monster cursed upon him
he wasn't a monster though, not at all. he came out, speaking of horrors that he encountered. he was the victim of a wolf in sheep's clothing, a mage who was supposed to be nothing more than a house keeper, who decided to try to shut the then three year old roulant up as to stop him from crying for his mother. it was an ideal thing to do if you were to be trying to kidnap the next air of dewmire for your own, as a way to seek vengeance on the king who had done nothing for you. it didn't work, though, by the time she had made it down the winding stairs of the castle, the queen had realized her baby was gone and the entire castle went into a lockdown. when the mage realized she was going to be cornered as she hid in that dim, dark room, she put a curse upon him. the boy would be a prince by day, yes, but by the time the first star had begun to twinkle in the sky, he was bound to become a wicked beast. it would continue until his twenty-first birthday, something she put in as she did love the young prince like he was her own, and never wished any harm to come of him.
she surrendered herself, stepping out and letting the three year old go free before being seized by guards. she was hung that next day, for crimes against humanity, but by then the gruesome changes had already begun. the boy was to be a beast by the time the first star would come, and would become back to a prince when the last star in the sky finally disappeared by dawn. his father was absolutely ashamed by it, demanding that they hide him in the basement until they figured out a cure.
the thing about it is, they never did. the prince spent his childhood in that basement, his mother coming down to teach him during the day and being left to claw at the walls and cry out for the mercy of a god who he no longer believed even existed as he spent his life in isolation. wizard after wizard came in, trying to reverse the curse but nothing could give, and instead they were left being hung by the king out of sheer anger and frustration, as he assumed they were all up to no good. eventually, the people who studied magic refused to go, as they knew if they failed, it would mean death.
just like the mage had promised though, that curse ended at 21. roulant then ran upstairs that night, beating on the door as he begged to get let into the castle. he was him, no beast, no monster, but nobody listened to his cries. it wasn't until morning, when his mother went to bring him breakfast that he broke free, rushing past her as he went to find his father. his father was astound, not believing him at first until later that night when they sat outside of the door, listening and waiting until they heard him beat on the door once more, his voice ringing out with joy.
a wave of relief hit the king, as his only heir would live to be king. that week, they had an official crowning for the prince, and the entire kingdom celebrated the life that would be his.
his father then began to tell him the stories of what happened, the memories that roulant did not remember himself. he gave in detail the day in which everything went wrong, and told him of how they tried to help him for many years. this did nothing but make a lump in the prince's throat, his stomach in knots. those lumps and those knots, they'd eventually turn into an anger that he could not simply sweat out.
his father passed away a few years afterwards, from a cough that was more red than anything. the queen insisted that roulant have his coronation soon, as she did not believe she could run the kingdom on her own with her own illness eating the life out of her every day. his coronation would be later that week, and the next day, his first declaration as king was to send all of those who were fluent in magic to the outer islands of dewmire, that were nothing but inhabited with the criminals of the kingdom.
there was an outcry from those who he had forced out, and eventually citizens started to turn on them, outing their neighbors and friends who they knew had been involved in magic. they all were put onto ships, one by one, bringing absolutely nothing with them as they were forced across the calden sea to the northern isles of candre. only a few remained, all working under king roulant himself, though they were to give up their spellbooks and wands as those items were only to be used at times of war.
it's been 50 years since those events, and the king's own son, dominic, has come of age. the king and queen offered to let dominic make one decree on his own, as prince, stating that they would stand by his decision. the prince said he would like to bring those who were banished to the northern isles back, a statement that made the king and queen go silent before unleashing a spew of anger. it wasn't until the prince shushed him themselves, and begged them to listen to his reasoning, that they finally cracked.
reluctantly, at that. dominic swore that those who were not involved in that particular incident over all of this time should have never been punished. the king and queen bit their tongues, as they did give their son their word, and agreed. they swore that if it went downwards, though, they would never allow the boy to make that decision again, except for when they were finally dead.
now, dewmire's ports have opened up as the prince looks onwards, watching and waiting as the ships begin to make their way to the shore...
summary.
dewmire is one of the most powerful kingdoms in the land, and it's reign is currently being changed. king roulant decided that after many years of taking care of the kingdom he knows and love, as soon as his son turns 18, he will begin to prep him into taking the crown before finally stepping down and letting the new era of dewmire begin. in the time of prepping him, however, dominic decided that the one law he would try to indite is to completely get rid of the ban of those who are able to dapple in magic. the law has been in place ever since roulant was 18, so almost 50 years of the discrimination against those who do practice magic have been held underway. they've been on an overcrowded island off the shore of dewmire, where they had been hosting prisoners for a time being.
after some time, king roulant finally agreed to let the rule be lifted with some very tight guidelines. those with magic are not to use their magic for any reason whatsoever when on dewmire's main land. those who are seen using magic will be prosecuted and either hung or sent back to the northern isle's, this time to their prison compound.
now, a few months after the law went into effect, the kingdom is finally opening its ports and allowing those who were casted aside all those years ago to finally come back into the kingdom.

i. at least 2 paragraphs per post. i understand low muse and whatnot but this is an advanced thread so most of the time, two paragraphs will be expected.
ii. reservations will only be held for 24 hours before the spot is opened back up, as a way to keep from having people hold the same spots.
iii. make your characters diverse and interesting!! this thread is beyond open for diverse backstories, faceclaims, plots, etc. not the same, cookie cutter format.
iv. i am expecting you to put some effort into your forms. again, no cookie cutter format. if i feel as if your character has no effort in it at all, i will very likely ask you to do something to it or simply remove you from the characters list.
v. no mary sues. again, create unique and interesting backstories. with this thread, i think it'd be very easy to have again, a cookie cutter character who's mother was a wizard who got casted away and all of these terrible things happen to her and she's so sweet and destine to be the next princess. none of that.
vi. activity is key. if you don't plan on actually being involved in the thread, don't even track. if you're somebody i know who simply "tracks" threads and puts out apps but never actually engages, i will not be considering your form. that might seem harsh but i have put so much effort into this plot for it to just die out.
vii. controversial characters are very, very welcome and encouraged. start drama ic, not ooc.

an introduction.
STANTFORD, VIRGINIA. It's a small town, located within the state's thick brush of forests and mountains. It's overlooked by most of the travelers who pass through as just another small town on a map with absolutely no significance in the people or the history. The buildings look run down, that shell gas station has had the 's' lit out of the sign for almost for years now, and the roads have seen their better days. The high school has had the same families for years, with some new additions of course and everybody knows everybody's names. A movie-perfect town for a main protagonist to want to run away from.
This town isn't like your average small town, though. It's not a movie with picture-perfect people falling in love in the corridors, with the girl who dances alone in her room waiting for that day she can straight up leave. There are no happy endings, a neat little bow on the peaceful mountainside as the two get married and she discovers all of the beauty within her own home town. It has it's own secrets that can barely keep hidden under the illumination of the streetlamps, It has a history that they won't tell you about in the town museum, nor would they want you to know about. Sacrifices, massacres, murders have all happened on that same road you drive down every single day, the road that connects the entire town. Did you know that none of that is even the tip of the iceberg?
This is a town created on sin, my love. A town that has fangs that lurk in the shadows, ready to bite into your neck. A town that has clawmarks raked into the dirt, faces that vanish within the blink of an eye, melodies that lead to your death. It's a town of utter vulgarity and brutality, one where the sounds of the innocent screams are like nothing more than just a blissful dream. But, I'm sure you already knew that, my love.
You are one of them, after all.
the plot.
Stantford, Virginia is just like any other average town, except this once has secrets that lurk around in the darkness and could kill you if they wanted to. Ever since it's founding, it seems as if strange things have been drawn to the town. Vampires arrived first, in hopes of anew in a home where they could walk the streets in peace before striking their victims. Then the witches came, fleeing Salem in hopes of a new prosper in a town they felt drawn to. Sirens and Werewolves came after that, the presence of who was first is still not known to the world, and finally, the hunters came. They brought their silver and their stakes, their poison and their daggers. The people swore to keep it a secret from those who didn't know, not wanting what they considered to be creatures to stay in their town any longer.
Underlying the soil of the town though, is what some call the kiss of death. The town has a history, sealed away from many, a history full of murders, massacres, sacrifices, and disappearances. Some wonder how the soil isn't colored red from the amount of bloodshed that's happened over the years, and how the churches don't burn on spot. It was hidden away for good, until a group of teenagers decided to go mess around in the Yeller's Cabin in the woods, using an ouija board. The teenagers never did return, and firefighters were called in to assess what could only be described as a burning hellhole in the middle of the forest where Yeller's Cabin used to be, an ouija board being the only thing intact from the fire. It practically glistened there, the eye of it as clear as ever.
The town is at a spiraling point now. It seems as if the end is on the horizon, as blood now stains the creeks with crimson as the Werewolves and Vampires find themselves at a war after a hunter killed a new blood and the vampires assumed it was the werewolves. They started to kill the werewolves with vengance, and in return, the werewolves started the war they never wanted, all while both sides take hits from hunters on the daily. More and more people disappear daily, and the news reports it to being one of the worst times to live in the town while people have hired a ton of investigators to look into all of the disappearances. All while the witches find themselves being hunted again, the townspeople becoming increasingly aware and paranoid of their presence in the town, associating the disappearances with them.

HUMANS are one of the most common races in the town, making up at least 68% of the population. Surprisingly, most of the population doesn't know about the supernatural spirits that roam throughout their picture-perfect down, granted, most of the population isn't in charge. Every single soul who is in control or something that's of importance in Stantford have all come from a very human, very distinct line of hunters who have been making a job out of it on the side for years. They control the town, making sure nothing gets out to them, and try their best to keep it safe.
Humans aren't known for possessing any otherworldly strengths, but they are known for their quick thinking and their wits. They can be stealthy for something without any powers helping them, and when they work in groups, they're deadly. They know how to control things, keeping what they want in and what they don't want out, and they have more strength than most would think.

VAMPIRES have been in Stantford since before humans were, actually. The founder of the town, Dr. Grey Statcher, was a vampire himself and the founder of the West Manchester Coven that is located there today. Many of the vampires in the coven have been there since before the 1900s, and the coven hasn't been getting as many new bloods due to the fact that feasting on humans is a bit more dangerous with the hunters around. Their numbers have depleted almost 2/3rds since the turn of the 20th century, and they seem to be a dying species.
Most vampires are like the typical ones you'd see in movies. They have fangs, they can't go out into sunlight, garlic is their enemy. However, certain vampires had been testing out a serum for years, in hopes of protecting their race with it so that they'd be less vulnerable to hunters. Only few bottles of the serum exist, as the creator was officially taken down in the early 2000s. Some say it gave him the power to go in the sunlight, others say it drove him mad with bloodlust and he became a modern day Dracula. All can agree though that all evidence of any such serum has vanished, without a trace.
Vampires are known for of course, their fangs, but many other abilities. They're known for being practically immortal, although if they do not ever drink a drop of human blood, they do surprisingly still age and inevitably pass away. They have extremely well night vision, being able to see up to almost a mile away, and their hearing is so suburb, they can hear a heartbeat from another room. They have quick reflexes, and are known for being highly intelligent and mysterious. Many go on to walk the earth, living life after life and adapting with the world until the end of time, or they meet their doom. Whichever comes first.

king: the king is the ruler of the coven, and more often than not either the founder or somebody the founder appointed to take over in case he were to die / leave the coven. the title changes depending on the gender of the current head vampire.- nathaniel "nate" woods (fc: ash stymest)
queen: the queen is also in charge of the coven. she's always the spouse of the king, and the title changes depending on the gender of the current spouse of the head vampire. the queen can be revoked of her position if the king decides to, or if they are to split.

marquess/marchioness (0/4): often times the social structure and events of the coven are left to these. they're often considered peacekeepers, as they maintain most of the structure of the coven.

baron/baroness (0/4): the king and queen pick the four barons/baronesses, and they are in charge of the fledglings throughout the time of them dealing with their bite to the time in which they become youngbloods. they are the ones in charge of giving youngbloods a mentor, whether it be one of them or another coven member they deem worthy.

doctor (0/2): the doctors are vampires who either have a medical degree or have learned from past doctors before them. they don't stay in that position for their entire life cycle normally, and often either pass down the position to someone they've trained or the king replaces them with someone with a medical degree.

regular coven members (0/10): these members have no significant control of the coven in any way, and often times are just considered normal members for the time. despite their rank being somewhat flaccid, they do have a lot of control and are able to contribute in the politics of the clan during the coven meetings.
youngbloods (0/5): youngbloods are fresh fledglings; they've recently survived their bite and now are trying to cope with the sudden power they have. they're usually controled by the barons, and will become an apprentice to a vampire at some point.

fledglings (0/3): fledglings have recently been bitten and are usually in the medical ward of the coven as they try to survive their bite. it will take about three days to overcome the change, and most of the time the second day will show if the fledgling will survive their bite or not.

WITCHES aren't typically your green skinned, black hat, broomstick kind of people. Well, they're not ever that. They're very similar to humans, as the only difference is the fact that they practice in witchcraft. Most of the witches in Stantford today are all descendants of those from Salem who fled during the witch trials. They've all evolved since then, and while they are not all linked to those of the underworld, some are. A few witches have even been known to summon demons who they end up befriending, and there was one case of a marriage between witches.
Witches exceed in all things spells, as well as potions. Some of them have set up shop in the downtown historic area of Stantford, selling potions and otherworldy items to help those of all species. The witch coven in Stantford is very benevolent, and often takes in those of other species who are injured and in need of shelter. They practice magic, and have all mastered the arts. Some humans have been known to become witches after either summoning a particular demon or trying to sell their souls to withhold the power that witches can hold, but more often than not their plans go south.
However, despite the status of the coven, it is extremely hard to get into the coven. The coven itself is very selective of who precisely gets to join, doing a ritual to decide if the body is strong enough to become a "starborn." The ritual in itself is often gruesome, and many have died from it. However, if you do survive, the witches take it as meaning their god has accepted you into their sanctuary and they perform a "rebirthing" ritual so you can become starborn.

head mistress/master: the head of the coven for witches is always the head mistress/master. they have almost complete say in the matters of house, and their power is not shared with their spouse as it is in most communities. they are often the ones to decide who will be the next head witch, more often than not choosing their own blood relatives. most head witches have kept their lineage as the ones to run the coven, but it has been broken a few times. while there are no laws to get a head witch out of power if they are malevolent, it has been rumored that a bishop or deacon may slip into the witch's room while they are sleeping and murder them after the abuse.

bishop (0/1): the bishop is essentially the head witch's right hand man, and helps the head witch run the coven. they're the one to decide whether or not to allow someone to join the coven, and often are the ones running the actual coven rather than the head mistress. however, their duties are decided by the head witch so the duties will vary from head witch to head witch.

deacons (0/3): often considered "third in charge" although they don't have as much power as many would assume. they're often considered to be "guards", being the one to enforce the rules within the coven.
- tbapriest/priestess (0/3): the priest is very similar to a doctor, though their skills are much less in depth. they're able to do standard medical procedures but cannot do experienced medical things that a doctor of the vampire coven or a regular doctor could do.

witches (0/6): the witches are simply regular members to the coven. they've been practicing witchcraft since they were a child, and often do not know as intricate spells as a higher up member would know but are very informed in the religion and in their coven.

starborns (0/3): these are new found witches who have recently been indited into the coven. they're often 18 years old, and are called "starborns" as the witches do a process in which they are "reborn" most often on a full moon in the coven's common area.

excommunicated (0/3): these are members who have been kicked out of the coven for various reasons. they're often considered criminal to the witches in the coven and are unallowed to ever come back. when a witch has been excommunicated, they will completely lose ties with everyone in the coven, as everyone will stop talking to them. deacons and priests are allowed to excommunicate members, but more often then not it's the head witch who decides.

WEREWOLVES are a shape-shifter kind of species, not the only ones to exist but the only one currently known in Stantford. They're more a recent occurrence than vampires, coming into the town in in the mid-1800s. The pack's founder was a woman by the name of Evelyn Jones. Not much is known about her to the eyes outside of the pack, but from the experiences people had with her, it's said that she was an unbelievably firey woman. Their pack doesn't live together per-say, but it is said that they have regular gatherings in the woods in a secret location.
Werewolves don't actually start to shift until they hit puberty. Not much is known as to why, but old wise-tales say that the moment your body starts to change is the moment that the wolf is 'born', and it does add up. Preteen and teenagers wolves are typically very small, in fact, pup-like. They grow as you grow, and are an inner monologue in your own mind. They're you, but there are two voices for you now. Your mind, and your wolf. The colors of a wolf's fur cannot be predicted before this transformation, either. Some thought that maybe your hair color is what determines it, which made sense until a girl of raven black hair's wolf was shown to be white. Others thought that maybe it had to do with something you ate, which was disproven when people were trying to see if their wolves could be distinct colors. The only thing that's predetermined is the eyes; as they're your eyes.
Werewolves are extremely athletic and can run, while in wolf form, for miles, with up to speeds of a car. They're great scavengers, and are able to find things very quickly with just their nose, and can leap for up to five feet. Wolves also have a very curious thing known as mind-link, as the entire pack is connected telekinetically. Typically, throughout the entire town of Stantford is where they can all communicate, but the mind-link is buffered when it's about 15 miles away from the town. The werewolves speculate that the high energy around the town may be what keeps the distance so closely, as it was an ability they had before but never to the lengths of this.
The full moon is when the werewolf is at it's peak in power. They're stronger than ever then, with all of their senses heightened and for those who are new to being a werewolf, it can be the most deadly time. They haven't yet grown in control of their wolfside, and those who do not make it to pack territory to receive help from the pack doctor often reek havoc on the town, before being caught and put down by a hunter, who are always out the most on nights of the full moon, as the pelt of a dead werewolf is worth a fortune if you can manage to put it down while it's still in wolf form.

alpha: the alpha is the head of the wolf pack. the pack is more like a democracy in this sense; after an alpha passes away the pack votes on who the next alpha shall be. more often than not it's someone who's already a high rank, i.e a beta or a delta but sometimes it has been a regular pack member.

alpha's mate: the alpha's mate often has slightly less say than the alpha, but still is able to contribute to the way of the pack life. they deal with the more domestic element of it, while the alpha deals with the politics of the pack. however, despite the fact that they are considered to be above the betas and deltas, they rank right below the deltas in status of power.

beta (0/2): second in charge are the betas. they play a very similar role to the alphas, and are the ones to take over when the alpha is not present.

rogues (0/5): rogues have been kicked out of the pack for a variety of reasons. these members more than likely had been kicked down to an omega spot but continued to disregard rules and were eventually kicked out, or did something so bad that the alpha just immediately told them to get out. if they're spotted on the the territory by a werewolf, they will more than likely try to kill the rogue. rogues aren't known for causing much good when they're nearby, often creating havoc where they go.

ii. reservations will only be held for 24 hours before the spot is opened back up, as a way to keep from having people hold the same spots.
iii. make your characters diverse and interesting!! this thread is beyond open for diverse backstories, faceclaims, plots, etc. not the same, cookie cutter format.
iv. i am expecting you to put some effort into your forms. again, no cookie cutter format. if i feel as if your character has no effort in it at all, i will very likely ask you to do something to it or simply remove you from the characters list.
v. no mary sues. again, create unique and interesting backstories. with this thread, i think it'd be very easy to have again, a cookie cutter character who's mother was a wizard who got casted away and all of these terrible things happen to her and she's so sweet and destine to be the next princess. none of that.
vi. activity is key. if you don't plan on actually being involved in the thread, don't even track. if you're somebody i know who simply "tracks" threads and puts out apps but never actually engages, i will not be considering your form. that might seem harsh but i have put so much effort into this plot for it to just die out.
vii. controversial characters are very, very welcome and encouraged. start drama ic, not ooc.
