  • Marshpaw

Its been a while since he had been over here, technically he shouldn't be over here but he wanted to hang out with Marvelpaw- It had been a while since she had seen her and he was kind of worried she had been caught. His toes challenged the border as he considered stepping over but in the light of day his dark coat would stick out like an orange goldfish in a stream. Would he be luck enough that she's the first and only one to see him here?

Marshpaw scuffed his paw along the ground with a slight frown, didn't seem fair how restricts kept them apart. Was it too soon to say he may actually think of her a bit more than just a spar partner?

    did you see the flares?

it had been days now, and ashfolly was missing home desperately.

she knew she'd be able to make it back to riverclan soon-- if she was honest she thought she'd probably be able to drag herself across the border and make it home now, but she ran the risk of reopening her wounds and riverclan didn't have a medicine cat to help her if that happened.

she hated it but she knew-- until the risk of complications had mostly passed, it was safest for her to remain in darkclan.

that didn't stop her missing riverclan, though.

and it certainly didn't stop her from the occasional stroll by the borders.

she couldn't help but hope that maybe-- maybe she'd get lucky and run into a riverclan patrol. so she could tell them what happened, that she was safe, and coming home soon. but it was only half a hope, because mostly, she was terrified of facing the consequences of the decision she'd made.

    and now...

well, this wasn't a riverclan patrol she'd run into, that was for sure. but the boy who stood facing her was still family, nonetheless.

"marshpaw?" she choked out, shock radiating from every bone in her body.

  • Marshpaw

His eyes that had been fixated upon his shuffling paw soon widen in alarm, his head whipping up and his green optics staring wide eyed at the molly. The tom could feel every bone chill over at the sight of her- A pawstep was taken back in shock. Marshpaw felt as though he had water in his lungs like he had when he desperately had tried finding her in it and now.. She stood before him.

He slowly shook his head at Ashpaw, eyes upon to move off of her. "You're dead." The black tom uttered dumbfounded. His tail curled around his hind leg and he kept slowly shaking his head in disbelief, "So everyone thinks your dead.. And you've been hiding here." Marshpaw's shock soon turned to anger as his eyes narrowed upon Ashpaw. "YOU LEFT US! YOU LEFT ME!"

    did you see the flares?

ashfolly felt her bones freeze and her blood turn to ice as reality hit her.

to him, ashpaw had never become ashfolly-- ashpaw had never even survived the flood.

okay. foxdung. this was not good.

her voice cracked and weakened as she tried to protest, "marshoaw, wait, no--" but then he was screaming, screaming at her-- furious she'd left them-- screaming just like finch had, oh god--

ashfolly jerked back, tears in her eyes as she squeezed them shut.

"marshoaw, marsh, please, i didn't choose to leave, i didn't-- i would never do that to you, marsh! listen to me, hear me out, please!"

but you did leave, didn't you...?

even if you didn't mean to, you still abandoned them...

frecklepaw's kits died because you weren't there for them, when that flood hit. sharkpool's kit, too.

  • Marshpaw

His face then contorted with emotional pain before he allowed himself to lower to the ground and slam his forehead against the earth. "It's.. It's not fair." He spoke to the ground. His body felt heavy like a wet sponge soaking in just a mass of emotions. Marshpaw was happy to see that she wasn't dead but everything else seemed to outweigh it.

A heavy breath left him and he lifted himself to sitting, "I'm not in Riverclan anymore either so I guess we can both be considered traitors." His tone was bittersweet, his eyes unable to meet the molly.

    did you see the flares?

ashfolly felt the breath leave her lungs at that.

    was he seriously implying that--?

that kid should've known better. the idea that she'd abandon them like that on purpose.

    what the hell.

"i'm no traitor," she said quietly. "i'm just as much a riverclanner as you used to be, marshpaw. i came back, they know i'm alive, i've got my warrior name and it's ashfolly, and i would never betray my clan. riverclan's my home. you'd know that if you still called it yours."

her single eye blazed as she continued, "n ightgaze is gone, marsh. kidnapped. and bluefrost left and she isn't coming back. i tried to save nightgaze, and... and finchpaw did this to me." she gestured at her pelt, blood still caked on in places, wounds still trying to knit. "loyalty isn't some game to me. if sunpaw hadn't found me and dragged me here i would have died."

a tight smile made its way onto her face as she added, "for real this time."

  • Marshpaw

His gaze returned upon her, his eyes narrowed and he got back onto all four paws. "You're still here though and not there." His green optics darted away from the molly- Ashfolly now. "Bluefrost was there too when you disappeared, when we thought you died." Marshpaw sighed, "I don't suppose Chasingpaw is missing too?" He flashed a sarcastic grin before it fell away as soon as it had came.

"How's life in the clan of the dark? Planning on staying?" His eyes moved back to Ashfolly, "Hopscotching the clans is kind of my thing now- If you can't trust the loyalty of Riverclan what are you gonna do."

  • ❛❛ ashfolly ❟❟

    did you see the flares?

ash inhaled deeply through her nose.

no. she wouldn't let him call her a traitor. she wouldn't hear that from him of all people, not when she'd ached so badly to see him again only to find he'd abandoned ravensong and his little siblings.

"no, chasingpaw's doing fine, not that it makes a difference to you-- and as for me, i'm only here until i'm strong enough to go back. until dusksparks knows my injuries aren't gonna kill me." her amber eye flashed. "i'm going back as soon as i can. i won't abandon my mom like you did."

but you did, ash. you did leave her. you knew you could've died trying to save nightgaze like that, and you left anyway, and you nearly did die.

are you really any better than he is?

he's just a kid. grief's forced him to make impossible decisions way too young. you know what that's like, ash. you know what that's like.

"oh, yeah. i know what you said to her. no longer part of the family, huh? well, guess what, marsh? you can't get rid of me that easily."

and something changed in her voice, toward the end.

staring at her little brother, not so much smaller than her after all. growing up like she had, making his own decisions. he always had been something of a rebel. she recalled that time he'd slipped on the stepping stones and pretended to be hurt afterward-- little trickster but she loved him all the same.

"ravensong loves you no matter what. i hope you know that. and i hope you know you're always gonna be my little brother."

  • Marshpaw

His ear twitched in irritation at her accusation , while it was true he didn't want to hear it from someone else. Yes, he had left Ravensong after their argument- After making her adoptive kits cry. The black tom set his jaw in place, his eyes staring at her narrowed in challenge as he squared his shoulders. He wasn't her brother though, just like Chasingpaw isn't his brother or Riverkit or all the others that his mother had chose to take in instead of caring for her own. Where the hell were his actual siblings? "You're not my sister! So.. So stop saying stuff like that!" Marshpaw yelled, his fur rising and he took a small pawstep back while his eyes remained locked upon Ashfolly. "Ravensong is not your mother! My real siblings are we knows where- She doesn't care, she'd rather get more cats to replace us!." His feathery tail lashed back and forth behind him.

"I don't want you to be my sister!" Marshpaw ducked his head down and his claws unsheathed to keep him rooted to the ground. He used to have a crush on her when he was younger though was also confused with how his mother treated Ashfolly, it was all just a mess. The tom wrinkled his nose, shaking his head at the ground. "I mean-" He let out a noise of frustration. "Do whatever! I don't care anymore!"

    did you see the flares?

ash laughed, tears in her eyes now. oh, this kid.

    oh, this freaking kid.

she loved him, oh she loved him. but she'd never wanted to hate him more than she did in that moment.

"sure i'm not really your sister. sure i don't deserve to call ravensong my mom after everything i've done to hurt her. sure i've never been good enough, i know that," she bit out. "but don't you ever. ever insult her by saying she loves her other kits any less than she loves you. they are hers. being a mother, it's not a title that's given to you, it's a job. ravensong took care of you like you were her own because you were, and so's beekit and stormy and heather, and so was riverpaw even though she's gone now, and so are roe and liz and annie and dune and chase and tem-- ravensong gives love like nobody i know so don't. you. dare. ever act like she's anything less than the greatest mother we could have ever had!"

she laughed a little more, still crying and added, "it might be a little late to make amends even if you wanted to, though, so i won't push it. riverpaw's dead. stormypaw and beekit, they're more broken than kids their age should ever look. ravensong's got kittens that could've been your younger siblings-- you could have had the privilege of knowing them as your little brother and sister, but instead they'll never know you. you abandoned kits who never freaking did anything to you, marshpaw."

in her manic fury, she missed the subtle hint that marshpaw's words contained, that his feelings for her had once been in an entirely different sense. what he meant by "i don't want you to be my sister."
