The Mystic
It takes a very special kind of person, to decide to walk into the Mystic; Largely because most people can't even see the entrance.
Tell me if you've heard this one before; There is far more to this world than you ever imagined. Monsters, magic, demons, it's all real. People are snatched in the night by creatures that most would consider complete fantasy. Bearded old men write books of magic to pass on to their chosen apprentices. In every town, a story hidden beneath the roads. In every city, a thousand monsters, hiding in plain sight. Magic is real, and it's present, and it's beautiful. Those who can use it? The whole world is at their fingertips. Any job you want, yours for the taking, with just a little bit of magical encouragement. Want to look different? There are spells to modify your physical appearance. Need quick money? Conjure it from thin air. Have a problem that's less... Mundane, than any of that? Chances are, magic can solve it. For someone who knows how to use it, magic can be the panacea for all ills.
But, here's the thing; Magic is complicated. Without the proper training, the proper instruction, the proper learning, it can turn on you in a heartbeat; Incinerating everything around you, summoning things out of your worst nightmares, changing what you would never want to be changed. Magic is dangerous without the knowledge needed to control it... And, the unfortunate truth is, those who know how to use it, hoard that knowledge jealously. Only a very select few are ever chosen to learn magic properly, in the ivory spires of the world's hidden magical academies. Less than a hundred students are chosen each year, in fact. So what happens to the rest of those born with the gift? Those who can use magic, but were deemed too weak, too unstable, or simply not enough of a priority to teach?
Well, for those living in New York, at least, they go to the Mystic.
A haven for hedge mages of all stripes and colors, the rejects of high magical society in New York often find their way to the Club Mystic, a place where there are others like them; The forgotten of the high and mighty, the outcasts of the great schools, those never given a chance. In the Mystic, one can learn how to use their gifts, at least to a point. It is a place where those who are forced to learn by trial and error, with disaster often following, can pool their knowledge, lessen the chances of mistakes. It's a place where someone who is desperate to learn, for whatever their reasons may be, can at least have a chance to attain the knowledge they need to practice safely. No one is denied entry, and no one is turned away because of who they are; Only malicious actions against fellow club-goers is enough to warrant a ban from the Mystic.

The term "hedge mage" refers to an individual who, though born with magical talent, practices that talent despite not having any formal training. The life expectancy of lone hedge mages is extremely low; Most flame out and either kill themselves or the people around them by their mid-twenties, usually in a trial-an-error magical experiment gone wrong. Some give it up before that happens, choosing to ignore their talent rather than risk harming themselves or others; Though some who have the gift don't even discover it until early adulthood. On the other hand, some choose to seek out knowledge wherever they can find it; Pouring over every book, story, or vague internet reference they can find, all in hopes of gleaning even the barest scraps of real, applicable knowledge. Magic presents almost limitless possibilities; For those who can use it, but don't know how, the limitations of their craft can become extremely frustrating; They could accomplish almost anything, be almost anyone, if they just knew how to use their gifts. Some hedge mages have the extreme good fortune, however, of being near to one of the hot-spots for their kind; The Silver Rose Inn in England, the Black Cat Lounge in Los Angeles, and, in New York, the Club Mystic, to name a few. Hedge mages who are able to collaborate and work together greatly increase their own life expectancy, far more so when they can reach such a place as the Mystic, where they have a much greater chance of learning to practice magic safely. Accidents still happen, there are no Academy-trained wizards to teach even in the Mystic and places like her, but the odds of both learning how to harness your talents and living long enough to enjoy them are both increased, when one frequents the Mystic.
The basic plot will be about a bunch of late-teens to twenty-somethings trying to learn magic without any sort of formal instruction or teacher. This roleplay is strongly inspired by show "The Magicians", so something is probably going to go horribly wrong at some point, a magical experiment gone wrong perhaps. To explore magic is to explore danger, after all, even if the rewards can be... Incredible.
The Mystic's Laws
I. No patron of the Mystic can ever intentionally harm another via magical means while inside her walls.
II. All knowledge must be shared. As you learn, so must you teach what you know.
III. The sanctity of the Club must be maintained; Be careful of who you trust with the knowledge of her existence.
IV. What happens in the Mystic, stays in the Mystic.
V. Do not feed the horned lion.
VI. All manner of magic is permitted in the Mystic, even necromancy and demonology. Knowledge is the only goal.
VII. No one is above the Mystic's laws.
OOC Rules
- All the usual good stuff; All FeralFront rules apply, no graphic depictions of sex, nudity, to intense violence, etc.
- No god-modding (being all powerful and never having anything bad happen to your character), Gary/Mary Sues (perfect characters), or metagaming (using knowledge you have as a person that your character shouldn’t have).
- This roleplay is semi-advanced to advanced, meaning that I expect good grammar and spelling and such. I’d like to see at least two healthy paragraphs a post, at minimum, but I do understand low muse and will accommodate you if you’re just not feeling it at a particular moment.
- Way too many threads die from the old “kiss and diss”. If you reply just to track, then it’s okay if you later decide not to join. If you do post a character that is accepted, though, please be active. If you ever feel the need to leave the roleplay, just let me know. It’s common courtesy.
- We're all hedge mages here; Meaning that I don't want to see any characters that secretly went to one of the Academies and knows everything. Just to clarify!
- I’m just going to trust that everyone read the rules and not bother asking that you put anything special in your form. I have faith!

Kieran Gabriel O'Connor
Nickname(s): Kier, Gabriel, Gabe
Age and Date of Birth: 22, August 10th
Mystic Regular?: Kieran first stepped foot into the Mystic when he was ten years old. So, yes, he's a regular.
Ethnicity: Irish-American
Appearance Description: Though it may not be indicative of his personality, Kieran's outward appearance is definitely that of a troublemaker. A tall young man with sandy blonde hair often styled upward, bright blue eyes, and a near-permanent, closely-trimmed beard, Kier has never lacked for admirers, considering his strong, handsome features (though the killer smile has to take the cake, there). His skin tends toward the paler side, which only makes the numerous tattoos stand out even more than they would have already. More often than not dressed in a t-shirt or tank-top, thus allowing him to show off said tattoos, Kieran does put on a black leather jacket when travelling or during winter. Broad and muscular, a number of hedge wizards have assumed that Kieran uses magic to keep himself in shape. While he does supplement his work-out routine with magic, the majority of his musculature comes from hard work and a very healthy, well-balanced vegetarian diet.
Height:6'2" (and a quarter)
Weight: 183 lbs.
Gender: Cisgender Male
Sexual Orientation: Homoromantic Homosexual
MBTI Type: Mesomorph
Positive Traits - Friendly, understanding, compassionate, charming, easy-going, generous, protective, funny, dedicated, loyal, good leader
Neutral Traits - Stubborn, intelligent, bookish, shy, logical, curious
Negative Traits Worrier, overthinks things, possessive, perhaps overly cautious, overly self-negative,
Personality Description: A lot of the Club Mystic regulars joke about Kieran being the ultimate big brother, and it's not hard to see why. He takes a cautious, methodical approach to magic that he imparts to anyone who asks; Which is a lot of people, considering he's one of the most accomplished hedge wizards the Mystic currently has among its regulars. A protective worrier who would put himself in harm's way to protect a total stranger, Kieran can sometimes be a little stifling for those he cares about, but that's only because he knows intimately the dangers of magic and, even beyond that, the world itself, and he wants to shield them. On the surface, Kieran comes across as a charming, funny young man who makes each and every person he meets feel welcome; Something he vowed to do early in life when he faced exactly the opposite from a lot of people. He will happily help teach anyone who walks into the Mystic, and he has a way of making even the most shy newcomers feel as if they've found a new home.
There's no denying that Kieran is an excellent teacher, to boot. Surprisingly bookish given his preference for black clothing, tattoos, and his motorcycle, it would surprise most people to find that Kieran will more likely be found at home reading on a Saturday night than out partying. The odd truth is that Kieran isn't particularly comfortable around other people, even though he's adept at making them feel comfortable around him. He gets particularly shy around guys he likes, much to the amusement of others who know him. Never having developed a particularly thick skin, Kieran takes any and all criticism to heart, and he never forgets it when someone doesn't like him or insults him; Not because he wants revenge or anything, but because he can't help but wonder whether they were right all along, even years afterward. That self-doubt perhaps has something to do with Kieran's possessiveness; He is extremely protective of what he sees as belonging to him, especially if it happens to be a boyfriend he really likes.
A careful practitioner, Kieran often clashes with the more reckless, thrill-seeking hedge wizards of the Mystic. Believing in a logical, almost scientific approach to magic, Kier's abilities have been honed through careful study, practice, and with the aid of numerous precautions. The more impatient individuals often find Kieran's methodology dull and boring, but it cannot be denied that hedge wizards who embrace his magical ideology have much higher chances of living long enough to enjoy the use of their gift than those who recklessly seek to accrue as much knowledge and power in as short a time as possible. Still, Kieran has been accused of being overly careful and protective of other hedge wizards in the past, accusations that probably have a grain of truth to them.
Overall, Kieran is a surprisingly shy, geeky protector who rather seems to hide behind his "bad boy" looks rather than embracing them as who he really is. He is a person who cares deeply even for those he has never met, and those who come to the Mystic, whether newcomers or old hands, will find no better mentor, defender, and guide than Kieran O'Connor. He is a big part of the heart and soul of the Club Mystic, and after twelve years it's hard to imagine the Mystic without the young Irish-American there to greet each new comer with a smile that could light up the world.
Quirks/Habits: Kieran has a tendency to chew his lip when he's nervous, only to have to use a healing cantrip when he inevitably draws blood. He also drums his fingers along any available surface when he's feeling particularly anxious, and he has a somewhat superstitious ritual of always smoking a cigarette before attempting a big spell.
Magic Skill: Kieran is arguably the most adept hedge wizard the Mystic has; Mostly because he's been going longer than almost anyone. He's had the opportunity to learn from a greater number of people than most others who frequent the Club. Still, to say that Kieran is an "adept hedge wizard" isn't saying that much; The finer points of magic and the more powerful spells elude him just as much as they do anyone else in the Mystic.
Family:Jackson O'Connor - Father, Deceased
Marilyn O'Connor - Mother, Deceased
History: Kieran was one of the lucky ones, when it comes to children born with the gift; His father was a hedge wizard, and knew enough to teach his son not to hurt himself or others from a young age. Born to said hedge sorcerer father and an actress mother, Kieran grew up in Los Angeles, in Hollywood, specifically, for the first ten years of his life. An only child, Kier was doted on by his rather eccentric mother, who was ecstatic that he had inherited his father's magical abilities. Dreaming of a world where she could have anything she wanted, given to her by her husband and son, Marilyn O'Connor grew more and more obsessed with magic as she observed Jackson and Kieran doing it, as father was trying to teach son how to use it safely. Then, when Kieran was ten, Marilyn attempted to cast a spell of her own; And, as with any such attempt by an untrained, un-gifted individual, absolutely nothing happened.
So she tried again. And again. And again. Until, finally, Marilyn O'Connor, already having suffered a great many blows to her sanity during her life, was finally driven over the brink.
Jackson found his wife swinging from the rafters of their bedroom not a week later. Kieran never saw it, and Jackson never told his son exactly how his mother died; Instead choosing to leave their Hollywood Hills house that very same day. Moving himself and his son across the country, to New York City, Jackson O'Connor soon became a regular at the Mystic, and he always brought his son with him, a choice that was, at first, questioned by those who didn't think it was wise to bring a child into a den of hedge magic; But Jackson ignored them all, and Kieran has been a regular at the Mystic ever since. When Kieran was sixteen, however, Jackson O'Connor disappeared unexpectedly, vanishing one day as if into thin air. Perhaps that's exactly what happened, given the forces hedge wizards work with. Though the Mystic regulars asked Kieran if he knew anything about what happened to his father, the then-teen never breathed a word to anyone about it, though many now believe that he knows exactly what happened. The only certainty is that Kieran didn't have a hand in his father's disappearance; If he had, the enchantments protecting the Mystic would not have allowed him back in; No member who works harmful magic on another can set foot back in the Mystic again.
To this day, Kieran remains one of the fixtures of the Club, teaching and guiding newcomers and working in his own, careful, scholarly way to advance his and the other hedge mage's knowledge of magic. Still, Kieran O'Connor remains a man of quite a few secrets, some of which may yet have to come to light if the Mystic is going to continue to thrive...
