Before this, she had many, many things.

There had been bushes and shrubs. Two eggs and a nest, crafted carefully and lovingly with only the finest of grasses, pillowed with the softest of her breast feathers. Before this, there had been a spot that was hers, with dry, dry dirt where she would scratch and peck until she dug up seeds. She had a twig that she would pick up and throw. A friend-mate who would strut and show his feathers in such a way to make the light reflect a rainbow of colors from them. A tone of voice to sing in lieu of a name. A routine to her day that was written in generations of natural instinct.

    Now, she had cold.

The sand shifted too much. She scratched and it fell back into place. She pecked and the tiny grains got caught in the fluff of her face feathers. She had always been a simple dove, and when the two things that had never failed to find her something to eat suddenly stopped working, she gave up for a lack of any other ideas. She wasn't starving, not yet at least, but her crop could only hold so much food and water. Cold was foreign to her. In the very least, cold like this. She fluffed her feathers outward and pressed her body further into the sand, although it held non of the warmth that it had during the daylight.

Before this, she would have rested her head on her back and tucked her beak under her wing and slept. Now, she remained awake and closed her eyes against the darkness.

  • It wasn't just the Veil--Soundcheck was getting used to this new Ruins territory too. He even had a new body--and he had realized he was an Alaskan malamute. Whatever that was. Ugh, but he missed his hellhound body! Huffing, he made his way to the strange bird simply sitting there. Like she was screaming "come get me!" "Uh, may I help you?"

  • reducedemotions

If Reducedemotions had been a larger creature, he might have stepped right over the newcomer without even noticing, for the dark made it rather hard to make out figures. Might have snapped her up with his jaws, presuming her to be prey. But he was a fennec fox, an animal of rather small stature, and adapted to hunting in low light, when the heat of the desert had fled the sands, and so he padded up to the dove and gave her a nudge with his paw. "Name and business," he asked, staring at the small creature.

When not one, but two canines approached her, she yet again fell to what would have worked before this, and held as still as she could. Even kept her breath small. Only, they seemed to see her already, so that had been pointless too. After a moment of hesitation, she did the only other thing to do, and gave up. The dog was big, and she felt cowed just looking at him. The... fox? cat? was strange to look at. He was an unfamiliar creature to her, but so much closer in stature than the dog.

Right, they had said things to her, hadn't they? Addressing the, what she decided to settle on was a fox, first seemed to be the smartest. He was much closer and hadn't sounded as friendly as the dog.

"Name?" It was a concept that she knew, just one that had never applied to her. Yet, before this, she would have never understood the speak of creatures so unlike herself. So she steeled herself a moment and made a familiar noise, and...

It sounded as a low-note coo, as it always had. A sound that held no meaning other than to identify herself. No translation. If the circumstances were different, she would have questioned these creatures ability to replicate the noise. Now, she hoped that her answer would suffice. Business? Biz-eh-nes? Busyness? She couldn't say she understood the second half of the question, so she opted to ignore it in favor of answering the dog's.

"Don't know why 'm here?" She looked to him with her left eye, then her right. Perhaps the only reason the two of them hadn't killed and eaten her yet was because they thought she was ill in some way. Maybe revealing that she was just confused and worried about her food stores running out was a bad idea. Surely they wouldn't eat a sick bird for fear that they would catch the sickness? She sneezed, not needlessly, there had been sand in her face feathers, and hoped the two of them would make assumptions.

  • A...coo? Well, she was a bird. But maybe she couldn't speak English well. He blinked. "Well, this is the Sanguine Ruins. If you wish, you're welcome to join us." It was nice to see new faces around in the wake of...whatever had happened. "My name is Soundcheck."

  • Well this was quite interesting. It appeared that two of his canine clanmates were occupying themselves with what seemed to be an injured bird. Or maybe it was sick? Volkrath never really acquired the taste for poultry, they were always so difficult to catch. Thus, the lion felt no inclination to make the little dove his prey.

Padding towards the scene, Volkrath would let out a small yet welcoming smile towards the bird. “Awe, it’s cute!” He exclaimed with a tilted head. The sight of a downed creature looking up at the trio with inquisition was pulling at his heartstrings. He felt bad for the little guy - or girl? He couldn’t tell! - and would crouch down to attempt an eye-level conversation with the bird. “Are’ya hurt?”

If she had been shaking earlier, now she was practically vibrating. Her eyes were not made for darkness, but even in the low-light, she could see that every single one of these bystanders had mouths full of sharp teeth. Such a tiny dove would be a little more than a mouthful for the lion!

"Join you?" Her instincts yelled Danger! Danger! Danger! but this seemed to be a world where her instincts didn't work. She couldn't scratch the ground for tiny seeds or hold still and blend into brambles. Quickly, the little ground dove weighed her options. At her top speed, she was sure she could outpace every single one of these creatures. Only, she couldn't reach her top speed immediately after take off, and staying in the air without the steady rise of heat would be exhausting. Not to mention she could only see her immediate vicinity, and not an inch more.

What would happen if she said 'No'? Would they simply leave her to be, or would she be snapped up and eaten because she was no longer a potential member of the, what was it called? Sand-Gene Ruin? Both prospects seemed dangerous. She had never been alone, not really. She hatched from a nest with two eggs, as every other dove had, with at least one of her parents nearby. When she and her sibling had left the nest, they had stayed together until they had both found someone to create a nest with two eggs with.

The thought of spending even another minute sitting out in the cold, alone, was a sobering thought. Suddenly the decision seemed easy. "Thank you, Soundcheck!" Hopefully he was the only one of this bunch that had a name, she wasn't sure how many more of those she would remember.

She stood cautiously, as if doing so too quickly would make each and every single one of these creatures pounce on her at once, and stepped, head bobbing as she did, closer to the lion. "'m not hurt."With a quick flutter of her wings, she aimed to land on Volkrath's head. His mane looked awfully comfortable, after all.

  • NOW THE DARK HAS CAUGHT THE SPARK IN HER EYES

The woman was glad her fur kept her warm. Thus, she came over and stopped in time to meet a new face. Oh, well, welcome to the family then. I am Always Dead. Shall we call you Bird then or would you like us to find you a name like our own? The Warlord asked with a nervous smile. Birds were food, but she was okay with them. Mostly because she ate flowers.

  • As Volkrath expressed his delight, he smiled. Yeah, he had to admit, she was cute. But Soundcheck wasn't a bird guy. When she thanked him, he chuckled softly. "No problem. Welcome to the Ruins."
