personality. seemingly unemotional, laila is calm and reserved, haughty and detached. she is discreet, to such an extent that she can appear frosty and distant. she holds her privacy dear and tends to be rather secretive, which is why laila is often such an enigma to those around her. she is like a puzzle whose puzzle pieces don't fit together, impossible to solve. laila can be rather manipulative, and underneath the cool reserve she could have a surprise or two up her sleeve! furthermore, she has quiet the temper and the slightest things can set her off. when upset or angered, she is rather impulsive and says the first harsh thing that comes to her mind, even if she doesn't mean it. this is just a mechanism, because she is sensitive and generally feels vulnerable. she is a very violent person and doesn't have a problem with starting a fight with someone who angers her. often enough, her fights are started by her impulsive nature.

past life. she was born as a girl named knox maestri. knox was born in italy to karina petrakis-maestri and alessandro maestri. her father, alessandro, was from a wealthy family that made billions of dollars and he was the heir to the billion dollar company. her mother, karina, came from a poor family and had to work for everything she wanted. upon meeting, alessandro fell madly in love with karina but their romance was denied by alessandro's parents for karina's background. upon his eighteenth birthday, alessandro disowned his family and married karina, dropping all contact with both of their families. not even a year later and knox was born. alessandro got involved with the wrong type of people, desperate to help his small family. karina and alessandro struggled to keep not only themselves alive, but also their beautiful little girl. alessandro was killed only months after knox's birth, killed in a drive-by by the same people he had gotten involved with. karina managed to go three years after alessandro's death, but without the support of her family and her husband, she snapped, killing herself with a gun, selfishly leaving knox all alone. knox was immediately taken in by alessandro's parents, jada and marcus maestri. jada had kept tabs on her son all his life, her love for him never ceasing despite his leaving.

knox grew up with everything she could ever want, but nothing ever seemed to satisfy her. she always knew something was missing, and she knew it was her parents. no matter how much she tried to pry from jada and the rest of the maestri clan, no one ever spoke of them, until she got in touch with maternal grandmother cleo. unlike jada who loved her son dearly, cleo barely cared about her daughter, so it was no surprise when she had found out her daughter had her own daughter and killed herself. it was cleo who started knox's passion for the violin, speaking about how karina loved it. wanting something in common with one of her parents, knox picked up the violin and instantly fell in love, same with painting, which had been her father's passion. however, it still wasn't enough.

knox started getting into trouble, messing around with the wrong crowd, sleeping around, and even tested out a few drugs. she fell in love with a man named gabriel when she was sixteen and he was twenty-one. he was a dangerous man who was involved with the same people who had killed alessandro. their love was toxic and heartbreaking, gabriel would constantly take his anger out on knox, hitting her and leaving visible marks on her body. despite her grandmother's suggestion to leave gabriel, knox couldn't, she felt too attached to him, especially since she had just found out she was pregnant.

at first, knox was excited for her unborn child, prepping for the baby's arrival. it wasn't until she witness gabriel murder a man in cold blood did she realize what a monster she was. when her son, gabriel jr. was born all knox could see was his father. she kept him for the first few months, but soon things became too much. one night a few days before knox's seventeenth birthday, gabriel took a broken bear bottle to knox's bottle when she dared try and speak to him about changing his life. upset, knox took her son and gave him up for adoption. this angered gabriel and when knox broke things off between the two of them, he became even more angry, hiring someone to try and kill knox and her family. knox was caught in the middle of a shooting but managed to get out with multiple wounds and a few new scars. her grandmother jada realized knox's life could be endangered, so she picked up her family and moved to the united states, new york to be exact where knox spent the rest of her life, which wasn't very long after.

knox was prepping for her eighteenth birthday, five months in advance. it would be the first birthday in which she would be free of everything back in italy. she was shopping around new york when she had a run-in with gabriel. the two had a heated dispute on the streets before gabriel shot her, killing her instantly.
