SWEETWOOD
Dust sweeps up along every horizon you can see, the red sand stains your paws. The desert, Utah, is a dangerous, barren place to the stranger. Nature is built to survive here, and it won't tolerate just anyone moseying round' its parts. Your parched, mouth drier than all the sand around you, and just when you think you can't make it one more step without a drink, you stumble on it. Sweetwood.
TERRITORY
Good ol' Sweetwood is buried nice and deep on the edge of Utah. A jewel in the dunes, Sweetwood is an ghost town, forgotten with times passing. A stream cuts around the back of the old buildings, diverged from a rapid river north.
Up north from this little oasis, the river's bank sits close to a mountain. Reeds and tall grass cover the muddy banks, wild flowers bloom in the spring sun. A little clearing on the bank, at the foot of an old fishermen's shack, houses the town during particularly hot days. A small path of stepping stones leads across the river toward colder terrain. We call this lil' ol' clearing, River's Pass.
The town of Sweetwood, while long abandoned by humans, still stands a creaky old testament to the former residents. The saloon, Mariposa, houses the main population. Cats sprawl in comfy, if not dusty, shared beds and sheets on the second floor rooms. The bar, still leaks with and stores aging bottles of liquor and bags of flour and salt. A player piano, amazingly still manages to creek out a tune on the odd night, even if it is outta tune.
The leaders of this little community live together across the street, in the Town Office. Cats nest in the tossed over cots and sheets in the the two jail cells, a room to the left of the main office and slightly collapsed lobby. The office is an luxurious space, cherry red wood floors covered by a throw rug rumored to be imported all the way across the sea. A giant oak desk, dusty now, stands sturdy in the back of the room, edges gilded in gold plated metal. Meetings are held here, and the leaders of this little place, can always be counted on to come here.
And last but not least, Canary Caves. An old coal mine, rumored to hit right to the center of the planet. The caves are always pitch black, except for a small window during the full moon. When the moon reaches its highest point, the mine lights up with hundreds of lights, whispers fill up the cave, loud enough for almost anyone to hear. Only a few know their way safely in and out of these caves. Reckon you'd best cull your curiosity.
RELIGION
Sweetwood doesn't have a name for their beliefs. All we know is that you don't go out at night too long, and you don't go some places. We an't particularly religious folk, don't mind cats who are. But lord help those who go and poke their noses where they shouldn't.
The Canary Caves, only a few go there. No one knows exactly what goes on there, but the shadows seem to crawl and drip on the walls. Whispers and noises echo through the shafts. Rumor has it if the caves don't like your kinda cut, they swallow you up. Put you so far down the mine you can touch the center of the earth. But they've got advice. For the cats they like.
The Fishermen's Shack, at the foot of the River's Pass, is never entered after dark. No one knows exactly why or how, but cats who go in during the dark, don't come out. Well. They do. But not the same.
Rosemary's Stone, is a little statue placed on the edge of town. It's a cute little figure of a friendly dog. It watches over the town, and if you're stuck outside after dark, sleeping under Rosemary guarantees a safe night.
Gunslinger, a mysterious phantom that's said to run the wastes outside Sweetwood. It's hard to get a good look at em', and they're more of a free agent, sometimes rumored a bandit, sometimes a hero.
TRADITIONS
Half Moon is a celebration in the honor of a long forgotten sheriff. Cats gather in the saloon, kick on the piano and enjoy as much food and puddles of liquor they can manage. Big blankets are dragged into the bar awaiting the big cuddle piles sure to happen.
Full Moon is a more quiet night. Everyone's holes up in their beds. No one except a few leave, ready to listen and watch the lights of the Canary Cave.
Duels and Chance, determine just about any large choices and disputes in Sweetwood. Duels are battles between two cats, sometimes serious, sometimes light. While Chance involves dice scrounged up from the saloon. Everyone picks a number on a six sided die, and it's tossed to determine the outcome of many decisions and groups.
Names come in my flavors, but any and all kids can chose to replace, add too, or keep their parent given names.
