She had met someone from space once. She'd had his kids mostly by accident. Except, she hadn't. Not her, at least. And she didn't remember it at all. That was a whole different lifetime. Blinking dark eyes up at the sky, Beijingpaw would hum softly to herself as the sun set and the soft painted sky turned to an inky black. She had found a nice little hill where the view of the night sky was not obstructed by trees. And as she watched each twinkling, celestial body reveal itself under cover of darkness, she found her humming faded, replaced by the songs of the stars. The sky was gorgeous now, lit only by the giant moon and glittering stars which looked so close.. like she could touch them. What a cliche thought. Sighing to herself, Bei leaned back, trying to take in the entirety of the heavens above. But the sky seemed to go on and on and no matter how long she looked, she would never see all the stars. She tried not to be disappointed by that fact. Perhaps she would never reach space herself, but.. oh, well this was good enough. She was satisfied with what she had; a lovely view and crisp, night air.

Black tail curled around her body, and she slowly slid down until she was laying on the thick grass. She reminded herself that she was not just here to stargaze. She had studying to do. The lights up in the sky were beautiful, sure, but they were also useful and she was determined to learn as much as she could about her galaxy. Her universe. Soft nose twitching, Beijing would glance down at her large, Astrology book. It was hard to read in the shadows but she was able to make out a few sentences when she squinted. She was reading about Orion, the hunter. She glanced up at the sky, looking for the three bright stars that made up his belt. She wasn't sure exactly how anyone had looked at these groupings of stars and decided that they looked like a human. She knew humans were weird looking, but not this weird. Ah well. Humans were always trying to make things look like them.

  • Once, 6,000 years ago, looking up at the endless dark sky was astonishing to Red Agate. 6,000 years ago, when everything about the universe was new, unfamiliar and fascinating. 6,000 years ago when she was looking at the night sky as she was led to her new soldiers while they explained the current war. 6,000 years ago, when the commander rode into battle and first saw the night sky from the view on Earth. It was beautiful before the gem spent every minute of every year out of hundreds of years floating around on a space ship, surrounded by stars. At that point, Agate was used to the constellations and planets.

Tiger Eye, being alive longer than Agate and being on that ship for 90% of her life, found astronomy even more boring and unimpressive than Red Agate. In fact, as the two walked along during the night as they always did, laughing and falling even more in love with every moment, both never bothered to look up at the sky. They both knew what was there, and they preferred not to think about it. Instead, they would just talk and enjoy themselves all day and night.

The two weren't paying attention as they strolled along, quietly chatting aimlessly, and found themselves about two yards away from Beijingpaw before they finally noticed her. Red Agate stopped in the middle of talking and looked at Tiger in a way that suggested she do the same. "Somebodies not sleeping," she pointed out, using her striped tail to gesture at Beijing. Tiger Eye blinked with confusion. Both had just learned the concept of sleep from a friend, so it was quite alien to them. Was it normal for many not to sleep at night, or did this stranger need help?

The husky took a step forward, muddy red eyes clouded with confusion. "Hello! Why aren't you... sleeping?" she asked with the tilt of her head.

She had been so consumed with the sky and her book she hadn't heard them approach. The sudden voice surprised Bei and she jumped up, shutting the book and quickly tucking it beneath her. She wasn't sure why she did that. Force of habit, she supposed, from when she was a kid and her mother used to snap at her for spending all her time reading "human nonsense". Beijingpaw didn't remember her mother much. Just that she called her out a lot. Dark blue eyes turned on the two creatures, and she hesitated, unsure how to answer the question. They were strange people, she recalled from when they had joined, but the question was valid. Why wasn't she sleeping? "I.. um, I was looking at the stars." She wasn't sure why she felt guilty for star gazing. Perhaps because she felt the whole idea was rather childish and she didn't want to be seen as some mushy, hopeless romantic type who just wanted to find the beauty in everything or some chic flick type crap. She was logical and systematic and she was guided by well thought out decisions not spontaneous emotions. Slowly, Beijing pushed the book out from beneath her paws and gestured awkwardly at it. "I'm reading about the constellations right now. It's um.. interesting, and.. I wasn't really that tired so.. yeah." She had never been good at conversation, specifically when she hadn't been planning for social interactions. This had caught her off guard and now she was stumbling through her sentences, cursing herself for being so reclusive and never learning how to interact with people well.
