BROOKLYN, NEW YORK CITY — 1981
brooklyn — new york city’s most crime infested borough in the twentieth century. whether you're an everyday commuter or a detective on a murder case, everyone's made well - aware of the steadily rising crime problems one way or another. be it a familial connection or something else, everyone seems forcibly tied with the dark underworld that practically rules their city. — but there's something new on the rise, something fresh — something the people of new york have yet to be exposed to. fight clubs. they're run by the nastiest of the nastiest, the worst of the worst. many go here to let off steam, or create some sort of alliance. not many seem aware of its true intentions just yet. the local police precincts have been all over them since day one, but one seems to continually elude them — brooklyn's own. it's by far the most popular, most overtly hidden of the city's ever growing ring. dozens of the best detectives have been on the tail of this case for months now, but can never get their hands on anyone but a lousy ex - fighter or two. just how deep does this rabbit hole go?

the ringleader
↳ rather self explanatory — the leader. the club is in their name, and most of the funds end up going their way. they call the shots, and in the club, their word is solidified law. the originally organised the place, and stop by to watch the fights more often than not. the entirety of the club respects the ringleader, and the pay is beyond exceptional. not much seems to be known on the ringleader, aside from what the bookmaker and the referee know.
the bookmaker
↳ handles what the ringleader doesn't wish to. money, expenses, puny problems. if you're having troubles, you come to the bookmaker. in reality, the bookmaker runs the show around the club. despite this, they cater to the ringleader's every whim when needed. this often rangers from useless tasks such as lighting their fresh cigarette, to arranging an 'accidental' murder in their place.
the referee
↳ one of the most important pieces of this club shaped puzzle. seemingly everyone likes the ref, no matter how noxious they may act. the ref breaks up the fights when needed, calls the shots in the ring, and decides on the winner. aside from the club's bigwigs, the ref rakes in the most cash. a ref can be known for dirty calls, or even for calling the wrong winner on purpose. though — this won't always be the case.
the announcers
↳ though many see the pair as annoying, they too hold an important rank amongst the club. the announcers hype up the tired crowd, purposefully enrage the ring's fighters, accuse the referee of rigging the fight — all for a good show. the announcers indeed work together as a duo, often sharing obnoxious banter between themselves. they get paid rather generously.
the fighters
↳ the stars of the club. of course, anyone who comes to watch looks up to the fighters. they're the showstoppers, the moneymakers, the instant crowd - drawers. by far, the fighters are the most important asset to the club. without anyone willing to throw a punch for some underworld fame and a lousy pay, there would be no fight club in the first place.
the detectives
↳ from new york's most prestigious police department, any detective assigned to the club's case are often on their tail. some have been on this case for years, while others are fresh on the trail. like most would assume, they're to be feared among the club's ranks. on the other hand, there's obvious corruption in the force — the club pays off several detectives under the table to keep their partners as far from them as possible

PERSONALITY
bookie is a rather curious creature. while not hard to get along with per - se, he's more so impossible to make sense of. he comes off as incredibly drab upon first introductions, someone who'd rather focus on work over a possible social life. of course, this is indeed the man's case. he's easily coined as hard to be around; whether it be his constant, stoic reactions to everyday cases, or his unnatural levels of silence in any situation. in all sense of the word, he's quite an obviously depressed individual. despite whatever plagues the man's mind, bookie is extremely loyal to whoever happens to be the ringleader at the time. if they ask him to straighten their tie, he'll do it. his most popular trait has to be his obnoxious level of submissiveness; he'll never turn on you, even if you attempt to turn on him. while rendered completely mute, bookie is great at completing business transactions and possible inter - criminal trades. he can make several deals without as much of a word, though he'd never work for free. possibly the man's only redeeming quality is his seemingly odd ability to practically speak to someone with looks. though the glasses he wears seem obnoxiously thick - lensed, his typically emotional brows tell another story. this appears to be bookie's preferred mode of conversation. otherwise, the mute man appears to have a fondness for small birds. he often likes for one to tag along with him wherever he tends to go.
HISTORY
bookie was raised by his widowed mother in a grungy New York City flat. an only child, he was always the apple of his young mother's eye, and she did the best she could for her son, even in their rather dire conditions. he spent the entirety of his young life in that raunchy flat; birthdays, holidays, first days of school. once he graduated secondary school with a rather flawless gpa, though, even bookie knew it was time to leave home. the boy packs his things, wishes his beloved mother goodbye, and moves to the heart of the great apple to work as a firm accountant. to his clearly apparent dread, he realises just how much he dislikes this job. sitting for hours, no legitimate action. just pens and papers. he'd swear on his grave that he never saw a dollar in all the months he spent there. it wasn't long before whatever spark he saw this company starting for his career is snuffed out, and he's kicked back to the streets for smart - talking his boss. bookie knew steam needed to be let off, and the firm's leader was the next best thing. so, the once renowned account finds himself at a slump in his life. he didn't know what to do next, what he could even do next, before an opportunity hits him across the face. bookmaking. stacks of cash, thrown around a casino in all its bet - won glory. he had more than enough chops to work that job, and it was practically thrown into his awaiting hands. it isn't long though before bookie's already managed to get himself wound up in some not - so - good business. more than anyone's fair share of underworld criminals found their way to the casino, and right under bookie's nose. being who he was, he openly affirmed them to get information. he used to be a smooth talker, but that was a long time ago. one spew of words led to another, and before long, mobster's were out for bookie's head. that, they didn't get; but they got his tongue. chopped it right off, or so a good majority of the thing. he'd never be smooth talking again. bookie loses his job to forceful muteness, or to whatever jumbled sounding words he mouth could now make. this time though, the streets welcome him back with something a little extra. the ringleader themselves approach him, offering him what you could consider a job if you didn't read the fine print. again, bookmaking; but this time, with an illegal touch. he'd be rigging said bets, working trade deals, money laundering. anything bookie could ever dream of. his work is accepted with a simple handshake, and he's new york's newest mobster. they never ask for a name, or they think he can't even speak that. bookie, they call him, that's your name. it seemed to be another fluke, as he's taken into the territory of an angered ex - fighter his first week on the job. it was a torturous experience; and the story of how he got his rather eye - catching scar. one of the man's cronies does a hacksaw job at chopping out his vocal cords when he wouldn't stop screaming. once bookie was out of there, it was back to the ringleader's side.
