spiritclan - home of those in touch with guardians of the past ✫
History
Spiritclan was formed several moons ago, long before even the eldest cats of the clan can even remember. The original settlers of the clan had varying backgrounds, such as being loners, kittypets, and even members of other far-off clans. These individuals of varying backgrounds managed to establish a system of order through the guidance of their leader, and the first head of Spiritclan, Leo. However, it wasn't until a certain event happened at the tail end of Leo's life that the clan earned its name.
When Leo was on his deathbed, he was alone in his den with no one else but his best friend and mate. And yet, he saw three other, rather large cats in the den, cats that looked like those of the mythical Great Clans. "You have led your cats nobly, Leo," all three of them said in unison. "So that you may rest easy in Starclan, the spirits of the Lion, the Tiger, and the Leopard will continue to guard your cats for many moons to come..."
The rest of the tale varies from there due to having been passed down through so many generations. But it is said in nearly all versions of this story that Leo's last decree as leader was for the clan to be named Spiritclan in honor of the Guardian Spirits that protect the clan's members.
Territory
Spiritclan territory consists mainly of dense, temperate forest with thick overgrowth. A large river cuts the territory into two and flows from the northwestern part of the land to the southeastern part. The dense woodland tappers off into moorlands the further north you go, though not many clan-members traverse that far north if they can avoid. Which they can't always do, since border patrols are a thing. The clan camp is located on a steep hill on the eastern part of the territory and can only be accessed if you know you're way through the dense foliage wall that protects the interior camp.
KEY LANDMARKS: Leaping Tree (used to train apprentices to climb trees; located just south of camp), Training Knoll (small hill used for apprentices' training space; locating near the Leaping Tree), Star Hallow (place used to communicate with Starclan, can also be used to confirm Guardian Spirit if necessary, located in a shallow cave that shimmers all times of the day on the western border), Lazing Stones (stones used for sunbathing; located just outside of camp), the river, Crossing Stones (rocks located in shallow part of the river; used for crossing into the other half of the territory), Lost Cat's Cliff (massive ditch located on other side of the river; watch your step or you'll become a lost cat too), and the borders.
Culture
Spiritclan's religion, just like most other cat clans, believe in Starclan and in the Dark Forest. There's not really anything else special about their religion to remark. It's just... normal. Though, it's not enforced on the clan to believe in Starclan/Dark Forest, which is pretty nice.
The traditions of Spiritclan are fairly similar to those of traditional clans: naming ceremonies, vigils, etc. However, there are a few traditions that are unique to Spiritclan (three to be precise). They are as follows:
Newborn Welcoming Ceremony: Those closest to a she-cat who has recently given birth present the mother and her kits with a flower they have carefully chosen.
The Determining Test: A ceremony performed on kits by the Diviner when they're around two moons old to determine what their Guardian Spirit is.
Joining Celebration: A festival celebrated by the clan at the start of every season where relationships between all of the clan-members are observed and rejoiced. Gifts and niceties are often exchanged during this time.
Guardian Guide
The Guardians of Spiritclan are the spirits of the Lion, the Leopard, and the Tiger, the ancestors of all cats. Though the reason as to why these spirits chose to protect this particular group of cats is often disputed, most believe that it is because the original leader earned their respect in some way. As a result, the Lion, the Leopard, and the Tiger protect the individuals of Spiritclan from danger and even bless each cat a set of attributes that varies depending which spirit is your Guardian. Cats are said to even to "become" their Guardian spirit during times of peril. It is also theorized that Guardian Spirits affect a cat's personality traits, though it's no known if existing traits are amplified or if lacking traits are balanced out. It's possible that both are true.
The Lion: Individuals born under this Guardian Spirit are blessed with the ability of extra strength! This ability can be utilized at anytime, even for the most simple of tasks. The personality traits believed to be affected by this Guardian Spirit include bravery/courage, loyalty, dutiful attitudes, leadership skills, and family-orientedness. If you take on the lion's form, it is claimed that an ethereal, golden mane appears around your head just like the cats of the Great Lionclan.
The Leopard: Individuals born under this Guardian Spirit are blessed with the ability of extraordinary speed! This ability can be utilized at anytime, even for the most simple of tasks. The personality traits believed to be affected by this Guardian Spirit include decisiveness, motherly attitudes, competitiveness, playfulness, and overall determination. If you take on the leopard's form, it is claimed that ghostly dark spots cover your body just like the cats of the Great Leopardclan.
The Tiger: Individuals born under this Guardian Spirit are blessed with the ability of heightened stealth! This ability can be utilized at anytime, even for the most simple of tasks. The personality traits believed to be affected by this Guardian Spirit include snarkiness, quick-wittedness, solidarity, intelligence, and confidence. If you take on the tiger's form, it is claimed that dark, spectral stripes cover your body like the cats of the Great Tigerclan.
Disclaimer: It is possible for littermates to be born under different Guardian Spirits.
