  • 'I should have told him.'

That was the thought that plagued her mind on the eve of her demise. Turtle that Hides in Shell, formally known as Turtle to friends, gave a faint sigh as she watched her children bumbling about. All four of them were perfect. Even just watching them, with no idea what kind of trouble they were plotting, she couldn't help but smile fondly. As much as she wanted to tell them the truth about their father, part of her wondered if he would even have been a good father. After all, Cave Where Brown Bear Sleeps wasn't particularly known for his warmth. The lilac tortoiseshell gazed after them, wondering how they would turn out.

Budding Flower in Snow had a kindred spirit. He was so gentle and wonderful with his younger sisters, but Turtle feared he would never learn to trust males, especially if he knew his father. Bear's reputation as a ladies man wouldn't do much to ease Bud's mind. After all, he was so sensitive to the idea of his biological dad. She was aware he thought it was Stag, though she always assured him it was not - for that was the truth. How would he feel knowing that Stag was, in fact, his uncle?

Her darling troublemaker Wild Wolf Who Roams the Woods was someone she always left a careful eye open for. Every time the lilac tabby went missing, the mother's heart stopped for what disaster could have taken place. Without anyone else to keep an eye out for her, she was constantly fretting that Wolf had found a hawk or been taken by up-walkers. Any horrendous situation, she'd pictured it. But despite that, when Wolf wasn't testing Turtle, the child simply gave her life. Nothing made her smile and laugh more than hearing all about the adventures she participated in.

Now, Dusk that Brings the Night on the other paw... Oh, if the tribe knew who the father was they wouldn't be surprised. It amazed Turtle how similar she was to Bear. Dusk and Bear, frankly, could be the same cat! With the confidence of someone much older, Dusk was going to be a brilliant cave-guard like her mother. For a time she wondered why the girl wasn't choosing prey-hunting, for it seemed more up her alley. However, in time it became clear that she was taking after Turtle more, which made her heart flutter.

The youngest of the litter, Light of Sky at Dawn, had the gentlest personality. Where her older siblings were daring and boastful, she was curious and excitable. While still as adventurous as Wolf and confident as Dusk, Light had something warm in her soul. It gave Turtle that Hides in Shell hope for the future, and she genuinely had wishes to see the rest of her litter develop some humility from the youngest.

The muted tortoiseshell gave the softest of chuckles as she gazed fondly upon them, wondering how they would turn out. Before long, the sun was fading behind the mountainous wall and stars began to speckle the indigo sky. Turtle called in her children to the makeshift nursery. Their new home still under construction, she had to make do. She'd picked out a corner that had yet to be converted into anything and made it nice and cozy for her family. For now, they were sleeping there, but in the day she would aid other kit-mothers with developing what would soon be the nursery. Unfortunately, her babies would never see it, for they would be pronounced to-bes before getting the chance to move in. When that happened, she, too, would be moving from the nursery back to the cave guard's den. While she would feel nostalgic about it, part of Turtle was relieved to be rejoining her friends. It had been a long while and she was ready to return to her duties. Those were the happy thoughts that brought her to sleep.

When she rose the next morning, Flower Where Bee Gathers Honey offered to watch her litter while she had some much-needed time off. It had taken some convincing, but eventually Turtle conceded and joined a patrol. She was guarding Cave Where Brown Bear Sleeps and Breeze that Carries Bird as they went about their dawn hunt. Not wanting to be alone and figuring it would be easier to guard one cat each, the cave guard invited her close friend Roar of Mighty Lion to join her. As the four departed out into their unexplored new land, Turtle that Hides in Shell inhaled the cool autumn air. It'd been a considerable amount of time since she had last had a chance to enjoy herself out in the open like this. Bear and Breeze veered towards the more mountainous parts of their land, given that was where the tribe members were most accustomed to hunting. Lion and Turtle walked on each side of them, sharing amused glances as Breeze was subject to Bear's boasting.

It wasn't long before the prey hunters quieted down to begin their hunt, so the cave guards remained close by to keep an eye out. That was when it happened.

    "Look out!"

The shriek came from Lion, whose gaze was locked on a fierce eagle circling overhead. It gave a hearty caw, rising in the air before swiftly swooping down, straight towards Breeze. Turtle didn't think; she just reacted. Launching herself in a desperate attempt to save Breeze that Carries Bird, she barreled the she-cat out of the way. As a result, she ended up just shy of the eagle's grip. Unfortunately, it didn't spare her the agony of its claws. Instead of fastening around her body, massive talons drove straight through Turtle's abdomen, and when the eagle pulled back to retreat, ripped it wide open. Breeze and Lion gasped, the former declaring she would run back to camp and get Stag. The Stoneteller would hopefully be able to do something - anything to help. But it would be too late. As Lion rushed off to get something to stop the bleeding, Turtle was left alone with the father of her children. And he still didn't know.

Fidgeting before her, Cave Where Brown Bear Sleeps for once had no witty comments. Glancing about to make sure the predator was gone, he leaned down to comfort her. "Turtle... oh, my stars... it's going to be okay. Stag will know what to do." Fear lighted his deep amber gaze, staring deep into pools of green.

She laughed, in shock due to the extent of her injuries. "N-No... it's not," gasped the lilac tortoiseshell shakily, quivering as she tried to get up to her paws. When Bear told her simply to lay down and rest, she nodded, having little fight left in her. But as he tried to tell her what to do, she cut him off. "Bear, I'm dying. There's nothing... Nothing you can do." A cough racked her lungs, blood splattering from her jaws. Turtle stared briefly, and knowing her time was limited decided to do something daring.

"No, you're not dying. You have kits. They need you. Come on, Turtle," pleaded the prey hunter. They might only have had a one night stand, but she was a tribemate. He cared for her like he cared for every other member of the tribe.

Shaking her head, she finally told him. "They don't need me anymore. They'll have you." When Bear stared at her, confusion in his expression, she clarified, "You are their father. I know I should have told you when I first found out I was pregnant, but I didn't want you to have to worry. I see now that they'll be better with a parent. They'll need you to get through this. Please, do it for me."

Turtle that Hides in Shell was met with a gaze that relayed all the final understanding and panic she expected. But it was too late. Cave Where Brown Bear Sleeps begged her to hold on, anything, but it was no use. He held her, sobbing into her soft coat as she took her final breath and left to join the Tribe of Endless Hunting.

  • "Speaking" -- Thinking -- Fighting

There had been no indication that anything about today was going to be wrong.

The previous day had gone off without a hitch. He had spent some time, playing around and chatting with his sister, ever content with his day. His mother's gaze on him, he had felt, but never paid much mind to. It was as normal as waking up to dew on the grass. Always, his mother in the background. He never had to look.

The morning after, he had awoken to voices, whispering encouragement and reluctancy. Blurrily blinking his hazel eyes, he had watched as his mother fought against the other queens who pressed her to take some time off, and Buddy smiled in agreement. His mother cooped herself up far too much in the nursery. It was time she exercised herself, before she got rusty, or stir-crazy.

Buddy had thought nothing of his mom leaving, simply shuffled back into his sisters' warmth and went back to sleep.

He didn't think to say good-bye.

Later, he'd regret it with every fiber in his being.

Turtle that hides behind shell was a good mother. She picked up her children when they were down, she encouraged them, and she chided them when she needed to. She taught buddy manners, and gallantry. She taught Buddy what it meant to be a good big brother, and how to love everyone in his family. Her love and attention may have been an everday thing, but he never stopped appreciating it.

But sometimes...He got so frustrated when she refused to give into his questions. When she kept hidden the identity of their father. When she refused to look him in the eye when he asked about Stag. He wished she didn't keep secrets from them. He wished he knew what in hell was so bad about their dad that she didn't want to talk about him.

He wished he knew if he was going to be just like him.

But as frustrating as her silence was, she was still his mother. He loved her. He needed her. He didn't know how he'd live a life without her.

But fate decided he'd find out how anyway.

Buddy rose to his feet, eyes wide when Breeze that carries Bird suddenly burst into camp, reeking of fear/ He glanced towards the shaman's cave, wondering if he should get some herbs, but then he noticed that she had come alone. Buddy had previously asked about the patrol his mother had gone on. He knew she had been one of the two cave-guards with Breeze and Bear, along with Roar. He knew that, and yet three of the four were missing.

His body knew something was wrong before his mind did. Before he knew, he was rushing forward, launching himself off suddenly-shaky paws as he bounded within closer range to hear what Breeze had to say. Something about the patrol.

    And eagle.

    Pushing out of the way.

    Hurt.

    Hurt really bad.

    Turtle.

    mom.

Buddy took a step back, then another, hazel eyes blown wide. No - no way...But just then, before he could refute Breeze's claim, or demand she take him to his mother so he could help...

    The scent of blood.

And Buddy watched with indescribable horror as a familiar large brown tabby tom carried his mother into camp.

    His limp mother.

    His limp, bleeding mother.

    His limp, bleeding, deceased mother.

"MOM!" buddy screeched, paws going into overdrive as he bolted towards bear. Already he felt tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. Already he could feel something in his heart crack, splinter.

    He wasn't ready !

  • with the body of budding moving once against her side, as he seemed to been stirred before he was finally cuddled back against her. the female would bury her nose in her brother's fur: consuming as much as warmth that light could against the bitter weather. it was until after time passed slowly- her brother's presence was gone and she felt it because her protected side was now unprotected and shivering cold. the lilac child would slowly rise to her feet, looking at her sleeping sisters before- slowly taking a paw and prodding their sides. "buddy left, let's go find him." as much as light felt bad for waking her sisters: the sense of something bad was on her mind before screams had hit her sensitive ears as they pinned against her cranium. death, death and death. an anonymous word rung in the small girl's mind as a strong flush of the sticky crimson ichor hit her nose- like that of the fresh-kill pile. light slowly made her way out the nursery, pointed ears swiveling and flicking at all of the noises. crying, screaming flooded her mind as she saw the direction buddy was at. with just a glimpse of what had been discovered: her dead mother. was she dead? the female stood there- wide honey oculars frozen as she was slowly dragged inside the void. the innocence of her oculars being ripped out her cranium as she stumbled back inside the nursery slowly, hiding her small frame in the piles of moss. don't cry. don't cry. it's all a nightmare. light would lift her paws to her cranium, her small curved claws digging in her fur til blood started to come. "wake up. wake up light. it's a dream." this was nothing but a nightmare, her mother was just fine. she was just out with her friends, because she hardly got to seem them as much as she used to. just a nightmare, a nightmare is all.

  • gonna give dusk and wolf a chance to respond before replying! c:

  • WildWolf had been half asleep when her mother left. She had murmured a goodbye without moving from her slumber, and watched blurry eyes as she left before falling back to sleep. But suddenly, something woke her up. Breeze came rushing into camp, towing about something that had happened on the patrol. Someone had gotten hurt. Turtlem turtle am had gotten hurt. fear shot through her chest, causing g her breathing to come in short gasps as she followed her brother and sister out of the den. Her eyes were wide and her eats were pinned against her head. No it couldn't be true. She wouldn't believe it. The lilac kit shook her head, not allowing the teats to fall and bristled her fluffy fur in protest. She wouldn't allow. She wasn't hurt she wasn't dead. Nothing happened. It was all just a dream. She was sure of it.

But the stench of blood hit her nose sharply, and the form of Bear coming into camp told the story. There was turtle. There was her mom. Bloodied. Limp. Dead. "No." She whispered, not moving from her spot. It couldn't be true. But there she was in front of her. Thick blood staining her beautiful soft fur. That fur she loved to hug so much. The eyes wolf loved so see sparkle with interest as she told of her latest advenature wide open and frozen in fear, yet they were oh so distant. Wildwolf's chest rose and fell in irregulat, shaky breaths as she forced back the tears and the sobs that pushed up from her lungs, fighting to get out. But her throat burned from the effort, and finally she let out a wail, tears streaming down from her gold and green eyes. Her mother was gone, and she felt completely and utterly broken.

  • "Speaking" -- Thinking -- Fighting

//Dusk hasn't been on since Sunday so imma just keep going ;3

Buddy's heart rammned against his chest. It lodge itself in his throat, filling his mouth with the sticky taste of bloody despair. He felt it fill his eyes with salty misery, and as he ran he suddenly realized he didn't want to get there quickly. He skidded to a halt, stumbled - nearly let himself fall, hoping he'd hit his head hard enough and wake up to find it was a dream - but his instincts caught him and he continued, stiffly, in a walk. His eyes continued to sweep over his mother - again and again, even though all that blood, the distant look in her eyes, was too much to bare. He felt a whimper crawl its way into his throat, but he forced his teeth to remain locked, brushing furiously at his watering eyes as he stiffly approached.

He could hear his sister's cry behind him, and his heart cracked further for her. Wolf - oh poor wolf, and Light too - what would become of his sisters' inoccence?

What would become of their lives?

He forced himself to stay strong, at least until he asked the questions he wouldn't dare let leave his sisters' mouths.

"What happened?" the words came out sounding stronger than he felt, than his shaking paws let on.

  • ooc: thanks for the note! i'll pm them and see if they're still interested c:

Fading from the light into the dark of their new mineshaft home was a relief for Bear. He felt a snake coiling around his heart every time his gaze drifted down upon the lilac tortoiseshell form he carried back to camp. When he was finally able to lay her in the medicine cat den, where she could receive some privacy before the vigil that night, he let out a silent choke. Tears stung the backs of his eyes, but he had to maintain his composure. Turtle's kits would be here soon; they'd been sent for, as they deserved to be first to pay their respects.

But the moment they began to congregate, his heart crumbled into pieces. Denial. Anger Depression. All three of these emotions were present in the eyes of the children before him. His children. Children he didn't even know he had until this moment. But was now the right time to spring this on them? Bear didn't think so. Yet... it seemed wrong for them to think they were all alone in this.

The prey hunter was wrenched from his thoughts by the heartbroken crack of Buddy's voice, and Bear found he could scarcely meet the tom's eyes. His own deep irises welling, he cleared his throat and began emptily, "It... she saved Breeze. An eagle was going right for Breeze. Your mother died a hero." He choked quietly at the end there, knowing that much was true and they deserved to know it. They needed a legacy to live up to, and he knew it would only benefit them to know the truth.
