  • //Yay for expanding the Medic Team! If you guys have interest in the Medic Trainee position please let me know so I know who to consider <3

It was probably the worst time possible to be hosting a medical-related training session, with a rather considerable amount of their herbs gone, and all of them frantically working to try and build it back up before winter, but, Lottie was still determined to take care of her team, and bring new people into the world of Medicine. They'd just have to... improvise a bit today. And, oh, did she really mean improvise. Today would be a day where they could learn how to properly apply bandages to stuffed animals, keeping their bandages clean, and reusable, for later. "Anyone who's interested in learning some more basic first-aid, gather for a quick lesson!" She had gone over some other first-aid things, after all. Choking, drowning, basic herbs, and she tried her best to keep these lessons simple so that anyone in the Clan could assist a Clanmate in trouble.

  • Iselotta had brought up the idea of looking for new medic trainees a few meetings ago. Chesspieces had been quite weary about it even when their supply had been fully-stocked. The medic trainee would support his mentor in whatever she wanted to do. But as fall began and the amount of supplies dipped more than expected, his concerns for the clan grew day by day. The pale equine tried his best to shake his feelings as he made his way over. Every lesson was a chance for Chesspieces to learn more and he no doubt wanted to get an idea of what kind of faces would potentially be joining the team.

  • //not interested in the position atm!

Nerys tended to get hurt a lot, and while it sometimes got her in trouble with the grown-ups, she wanted to take care of it herself. She watched the medic team with a determined expression, before heading closer so she could be at the front of the crowd; she wasn't tall enough to see over others just yet. The serval kitten's gaze wandered to the stuffed animals Lottie had. Those weren't real animals! What were they doing here?

  • Blizzardclanners could always use to learn about medicine, considering how often everyone got hurt. Pierce had never been good when it came to healing, despite the clanwide classes he had taken on it, but he tried to learn anyway, if only to make sure he could take care of his family if they ever got into trouble. Nerys was the one that was always getting into trouble, but then there was Jasper and Lottie- what if she somehow got hurt and there was no one to take care of her? Chester and Jacob might not always be there to help, and Pierce was terrified of something happening to her - or anyone else he cared about, for that matter, though it'd be far more dangerous if they were one medic short - when they were alone; when he couldn't do anything to help.

That was a bit dark, though. Blizzardclanners didn't die that often, right? The medics always managed to take care of them, and Jasper and Nerys didn't usually get into the dangerous of things - Jasper even less so. Approaching after the younger wildcat, he came to stand beside Nerys, greeting her with a gentle nudge of his nose before training his gaze on Lottie, shooting her a bright smile, though he wasn't sure if she'd see it or not.

  • //billie would be interested o:

Billie didn't know jack shit about how herbs worked, or how to use them, or anything even close to those lines. However, learning about them seemed way more interesting than learning how to fight or getting involved in the inter-Clan politics so many of his Clanmates seemed to be so well-versed in. All that seemed like a waste of time and effort to him. Healing though, you could actually help people. He had already visited the medic den once for help with a bleeding paw, and really, what Lottie did seemed much preferable to, like, Jersey's job or something. Not to mention Jacob was a healer too.

The small tuxedo found himself making his way over at the Head Medic's call after Pierce, leaning forward to get a better look at the stuffed animals she had brought. "The hell are these for?" he asked, a smile on his face as he glanced quizzically upwards to Lottie. He knew she was going to reveal their purpose soon, but hey, sometimes it was nice to just talk. Taking a seat, he glanced briefly around at the others as he waited for the lesson to start, humming softly to himself as he did so.

  • The last herb training had really interested the child, but they'd been pretty confused by it, but they were older now, and hoping to maybe learn something useful so they could help Jacob. They loved helping Jacob. "Huff learn?" They asked as they came to a halt beside Billie, they wanted to learn more, they wanted to make Jacob proud, because they looked up to Jacob... and wanted to be like Jacob. But they also wanted to be like Albion, honestly, they wanted to be like everyone.

They plopped down in a sitting position and cocked their head to one side.

    /kinda interested.

  • HIDE AND SEEK IN THE WATERFALLS — MAXINE CAULFIELD

    "MAX", BIOGRAPHY & PLOTTING THREAD

    /interested!!

While it had been Lottie's voice alone that had summoned Max from her home, the contents of her words piqued her interest as well as place a melancholic stone in her stomach. Max knew very little of medicine, let alone of the more naturalist route that ferals were forced to take. Poppy seeds were their alternative to... penicillin? No, penicillin was an antibiotic- poppy seeds... wow, alright, she had more of a limited knowledge than she thought. She could recall the names of a handful of herbs from her extensive time around Kate, but that was where it ended. At one point she had learned their uses, but without the need for application and the bizarro usage of it, Max had not retained the information. But it was important, undoubtedly. Max was lacking the claws of her front paws, rendering her useless in any course of war. She could not defend herself unless she planned on putting her teeth to good work, meaning she damn well better know how to fix herself if (when, more realistically, although it was not a future Max liked to think about) she ever got in a fight with something- or someone. Padding over at a lethargic pace, stormy blue eyes nervously flicked across the group to pick out faces both of strangers and vague acquaintances. The only one she truly recognized was Iselotta, her attention fixed wholly on the wildcat as she found a seat near the back of the slowly growing congregation. A small smile worked its way onto her maw as she observed the materials the Medic had brought with her. Basic first-aid would be the lesson, and without a proper dummy (or volunteer) the plushies were a good choice. Humming contently as tufted ears angled forward to catch her friend's words, Max patiently awaited the arrival of others so that Lottie could begin.

  • //okay i'll give it a shot - interested

Several times he'd popped by these medic sessions, but in the end, he'd always stood by on the sidelines and watched it go down without participating - even if he had said he would. This time, it was serious. Medical knowledge was useful in many, many ways. As far as he knew, there was no downside to having the capability to heal. If he took the path of healing, he would hold life and death in his hands. In a sense, he's already held both. Multiple times. But that was in literal terms.

Ska'arq's hand was finally healing, the wounds turning into scar tissue. He could walk on it with minimal pain now, which was good. The other wounds from his assault were doing better as well, despite his attempts to worsen them. The dragon walked over, taking a seat as he coiled his tail around his ankle. "I would like to learn."

  • With a few people gathering, Lottie would offer a small smile and a nod as they began to gather around, some speaking up, some keeping to their curious silence. Taking a breath, she would gently lift one of the stuffed animals that she had brought. "Today, we'll be talking about how to properly apply bandages, in case there's no one else around to assist. It's of very little knowledge, but applying bandages too tight or too loose can actually be harmful for the patient. And, because we're low on supplies and need to conserve what we have, we'll be having you work with stuffed animals instead of on yourselves to keep the bandages clean. Also try and refrain from dropping them, please- anyway," With this warning in mind, she would lift one of the rolls of bandages for everyone to see.

"Another practical use for using stuffed animals is that you can physically see if your bandages are too tight. But, while I pass these out, can anyone give me any reasons why it's important to apply bandages properly, instead of too tight or too loose?" With this question now up in the air, she would go around, passing out various stuffed animals, then again, banadages, though the latter far more carefully.

  • Oh! Huff knew this one. They stuck their paw high in the air, toppling over. "Huff know if they too loose the don't make ouchie better. But if they're too tight Huff's leg goes numb!" The child informed the female nodding emphatically at their answer. They'd gone through that. They'd shed their bandages and tried to put them back on, finally giving up and going to a professional.

Ah, he had arrived just on time. Shortly following his exclamation of attendance, Lottie began to speak, explaining the lesson. Bandaging? Yes, that was certainly a basic form of aid. It hadn't occurred to him before that they could be too loose or too tight. Perhaps that was because he was used to the medics doing their jobs so well. At the mention of stuffed animals, his figurative brows rose. Yes, he supposed that made sense, but it wasn't quite what he was expecting.

As the head medic passed out the supplies, he sat on his haunches, holding one item in each hand. She appeared to be expressing concern for the bandages in particular. It would be wise, he supposed, to heed the caution and act accordingly. His eyes flickered to the stuffed animal he was given, but his attention was snagged back to Lottie as her question rang out, and then to Huff as he answered. A logical answer- but he hadn't thought it would come from the child, of all people. Maybe the badger was smarter than he let on? The wording was quite off, however. Pitching in, he added, "Loose bandages will not properly stop the blood flow. They will simply absorb excess blood, which is not the purpose of the bandage. Too tight, and although it will stop the bleeding, but it has the capability to stop the blood flow altogether, if I am correct. The word I'm thinking of... Tourniquet, yes? Stopping the blood flow in the limb or specific area can be damaging."

  • HIDE AND SEEK IN THE WATERFALLS — MAXINE CAULFIELD

    "MAX", BIOGRAPHY & PLOTTING THREAD

It seemed Max was just in time, as Lottie quickly dove into the lesson summary as she weaved through the crowd to pass out the necessities. Max held her breath when the Medic stopped by her to deposit a stuffed animal and bandages, anxiety beginning to swell as voices around her lulled into a discontent silence to allow Iselotta to speak. She prompted the small crowd with a question, one that Max found surprisingly advanced- while it was a shallow assumption, she hadn't fully recognized the fact that Lottie could make full use of bandages just as much as human doctors could. Blinking slowly as her gaze turned town toward the tightly coiled bandaging, tufted ears slowly inclined back as first Huff spoke up. Max was not a public speaker. The idea made her a bit uncomfortable- did she have to? Ska'arq spoke up next, a more detailed description than the young Huff had provided, further pressuring the caracal into speaking. Stormy blue eyes flicked up from the bandages to quickly sweep the crowd, resting briefly on Billie in a half-expectant wait to see if the black and white male would also chime in. So... then Max should speak up as well, should she not?

"Loose bandages don't prevent infection," Max's voice was weak when she finally spoke up, finding solace solely in the fact that it was Iselotta she was addressing and not yet another stranger. "At least, no- not as well, right?" God, what was there left to say that hadn't been already? Lips pressing into a thin line, Max turned her gaze downward toward the stuffed animal. As childish as it was, she missed having one of her own- maybe she'd be able to talk Lottie into letting her keep this one? "And tight bandages... they peel off dead tissue, right?" Her answers weren't exactly confident coming out of her mouth, but Max was faithful enough in them to speak up in the first place. "Isn't that a thing, where like- if they want to take tissue out of an open wound they'll pack wet bandages into it then peel it off and-" Max interrupted herself, clawless toes curling into the soil beneath her. "Sorry, uh, that was off-topic."

*:・゚✦ Jacob arrived quietly behind the others, looking towards Lottie with a light smile and letting his gaze wander around the crowd that had gathered. He was happy to see all the different people that had come to learn and he felt a swell of pride in his chest. One of the few things that Jacob actually took pride in was the work of the medic team and that work included things like this, where they got to educate their clanmates. It made the boy rather happy, in any case, and he was glad to see so many people there to learn. He would settle down, waiting behind those that had gathered in case anyone needed any help or further instruction.

  • Oh, so that's what the toys were for - cool! The small boy listened quietly for a moment as Lottie passed out the supplies, examining his own stuffed animal and bandages before considering her question. Well, damned if he knew - he could probably make a guess, but he was still just a kid with absolutely no training. He glanced around at Huff and Ska'arq and Max as they all answered, eyebrows raising as he tried to take in everything that they were saying. All this about blood flow and tissues and tourniquets was foreign to him - what Huff said was way easier to understand. Perhaps Lottie would clear all this up in a minute.

  • //Sorry for the delay! I was gone with friends on saturday c:

Lottie listened in silence as the various voices spoke up to give their opinions to her carefully crafted question, pleased to find that many of them had the correct answer with only a few moments of thought- though it wasn't about how fast someone thought, but rather how their answer was stated. "Yes, Ska'arq, a tourniquet, though it's not quite the same concept of simply having bandages too tight. Correct, Huff, and Max, yes. A little more complicated on the scale, but in a manner of speaking, yes. Having bandages too tight cuts off blood circulation in the affected area, but not in the limb itself, and instead puts more stress and pressure on the surrounding area, and obviously, too loose doesn't do anything at all but sop up the injury without staunching the flow. Good, thank you for your answers. And Max, in consideration to your ramblings, yes, though it's more likely we would pack a wound in order to provide more pressure for an area that's bleeding too heavily to manage quickly with just bandages. Though you then have to be careful of infection and that it's not kept that way for too long since it is a... ah... foreign entity in the body.

Right, then, everyone should have supplies now. I'd like you all to attempt to apply a bandage to an arm or a leg now, doesn't matter which, and when you're done, let me know and I shall come check them. While you do that, let me pose another question I ask all my trainees: In a situation where you had a wound and the choice between bandages or cobwebs, which would you choose and why?"

  • //OOC

His eyes were locked on Iselotta as she addressed their answers. Tourniquet was not bandages that were too tight. He quietly stowed the information away, nodding to show that he understood. He seemed to drink in every word she said, following along with her eyes as she spoke to the crowd.

The dragon’s eyes flickered down to the stuffed animal that was still clutched in his claws. It couldn’t be too tight, nor too loose. Ska’arq figured that ‘too loose’ would be bandages that didn’t squeeze the would at all, or not enough. Thinking about it, that was an obvious conclusion. Weighing the fake creature in his scarred hand, he placed it on his knee as he unrolled a small portion of the bandages.

Perhaps it wasn’t a smart idea for a near-emotionless dragon to do medic work? Sympathy and empathy were two very important traits, but at this point in time, he lacked both. Ska’arq practically crushed the poor stuffed animal against his knee as he began wrapping the bandages around it. He was about to cut the bandage with his claw, but stopped, instead holding the roll against the animal. The medic had mentioned she needed her bandages- he didn’t want to cut some off and waste it. Right?

His gaze flickered up to Iselotta again as she began making rounds to examine the participants’ attempts. His bandages were far too tight, and he was still squeezing the ‘life’ out of the poor thing in his grip.
