  • John didn't really mind, he had nowhere to be until later that night.

"Here..." Rory murmured, offering him the money to pay him back for her drink.

  • The drive out of the city was fairly quiet, Virginia didn't say anything until they were into the countryside. "So, as you've probably figured out, I come from money," she explained. She wanted to soften the blow a little bit, most people tended to be utterly shocked the first time they saw Midborough Hill.

Lafayette held up his hands, away from her money. "Merci, mademoiselle, but your money is no good here," he argued. It went against the way he was raised to accept her money, so he wouldn't be doing that anytime soon.

  • John shot her a grin. "So do I." He knew he wasn't the richest of the school, but both he and Lafayette were fairly high up there.

Rory looked to him for a moment before putting it away. "If you're sure..."

  • Virginia sighed in relief. "Okay good, because when I take most people to Midborough Hill for the first time, they freak out," she explained. Very few people in her circle of friends had been to her house for that very reason.

"I'm sure," Lafayette assured her. He picked up their drinks when the barista set them down with a quick thank you. "Where do you want to sit?" he asked, looking at Aurora.

  • John looked to her. "I can imagine. I was with Alexander when he saw pictures of Lafayette's home in France."

Rory looked to her chair. There were actually two, but the other usually remained empty. "There?" She asked hopefully.

  • Virginia vaguely remembered hearing that Alexander was poor. "I bet that was fun." She chuckled at the thought.

Lafayette nodded his assent. "Of course, that spot is good." He made his way over and took a seat. Then, he held out his hand, offering Aurora's coffee to her.

  • Virginia felt the usual butterflies as they crested the hill. Once you were over that hill, you could see Midborough Hill in all of its glory. Virginia glanced over at John to see how he'd react.

"I wanted to," Lafayette assured. "Besides, I work here, so I get an employee discount," he explained. He was sure he had seen Aurora in her before a couple of times while he was working.

  • John gazed out at her land. "It's beautiful." He told her honestly.

Rory nodded slightly. "I've seen you a few times..." she was just too quiet to go up and order anything with someone she recognised there.

  • "Thank you." Hearing someone respond with actual words for a change was refreshing. "Maybe someday soon, we can get your friend Alexander out here," Virginia joked.

"This must be your favorite spot then," Lafayette guessed. Every time he worked and she was here, he would see her sitting over in this spot alone.

  • John grinned at her. "Only if we record it." He agreed.

Rory nodded slightly. "I've been coming here to write for the last two years." It was where she had been given the notebook. Even now it was still her favourite spot in town besides the movie theatre or her room.

  • Virginia giggled merrily at the thought. "We could probably make ourselves richer if we sold the recording."

Lafayette's smile faltered slightly at that. "Where else do you like to hang out?" he asked. Maybe they could go one of those places sometime.

  • John laughed with her. "Because we could definitely use it."

Rory shrugged. "My room? I don't get out much. Or talk to anyone... but sometimes... when my mom gets paid we'll go and see one of the movies playing."

  • Virginia rolled her eyes playfully as she turned into her long driveway. "Oh, totally," she agreed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Lafayette took in what she said thoughtfully. "Maybe some other time, when I don't have to work, we can go see a movie," he offered.

  • Once Virginia had parked, she turned the car off and stepped out. Then, she walked to the front door, where she waited for John to follow her.

Lafayette shook his head. "No," he insisted, "I would pay for your ticket." It was only fair, if he was inviting her out, then he should be the one to pay.

  • John got out and followed her to the door, looking around curiously.

Rory's eyes widened. "I couldn't ask that of you, that's expensive!' She exclaimed.

  • Virginia opened the door and stepped inside. "Welcome to Midborough Hill, it's been in the family since before the Revolutionary War."

"Let me let you in on a little secret, I don't work because I need the money," Lafayette explained, "I work to get the full American experience. My family back in France is very wealthy."

  • John looked around as he followed her in. "Sincere Revolutionary War?'

Rory still looked torn. "It's still expensive... whether you have the money or not..."

  • Virginia nodded. "My distant great grandfather built this place from the ground up in 1754, and it's passed down from generation to generation. And, since none of my brothers want it, someday it will be mine."

Lafayette blushed, feeling sheepish. He really didn't think it was that expensive. "It's no trouble, really."
