    Alpha

"I'd kill to take a day off," I growled, marking another area of town clear of new shifters on my list. I threw some of my long brown hair out of my eyes before turning and starting towards the other block. The sun was setting and it painted the area a beautiful orange. I squinted against the dwindling sunlight. Of course, while some of its beauty touched the earth, most of it remained in the dying sky. I narrowed my eyes at the approaching storm clouds that meant definite rain before continuing to move forward. I was the only one on 'new shifter' duty, as I liked to call it. I didn't have a mate and Eclipse (our only Elite so far) wasn't good company. While not a lot of shifters had been popping up lately, my job got lonely after a while. I rounded the corner and my sensitive eyes swept around the area and I sniffed the air. New shifters absolutely stunk. So much I could smell them in my human form. None over here, for quite a while actually. I marked the last block off my list before turning and making my way towards the forest. I loved the end of the day; that's when I would return to the pack and get reports of the day. Hopefully all would be good. I couldn't wait to turn into my wolf form! How I hated this human body.

"Why me?" I howled, curling my tail around my nose as I huddled in the corner of the main camp. Sophie yipped and wagged her tail as she pounced on me again. I chuckled as she slid off my back and landed on her side with an 'oof!' My eyes turned towards the sky as I allowed the pup to attack me again. God, it was definitely going to rain. Hopefully it wouldn't rain all day like yesterday when the storm rolled in tomorrow. I drew my attention away from the sky before the pup could catch me unaware like she so often did and suddenly stood and stretched. I felt like going for a nice long run. I had gotten today off so I helped Mist with Sophie, but I wanted to take off before Midnight got back and we all had to report.

    Hunter

"Yay! The day is almost over!" I whispered to myself. The Hunters had broken apart to hunt separately for a little bit before we would regroup and head back to camp. I had wandered almost out of the forest and was on the plains on the east side of our territory. We had gotten plenty of prey this morning and didn't really need it, but I felt like chasing some rabbits across the plains. I peaked my head out of the tall grass and looked around for any signs of danger before declaring the area safe and sniffing. Rabbit! Close by as well. I began slowly moving forward, my muscles bunched with the anticipation of leaping through the air. After a few seconds, my paw found a rabbit hole and I almost yipped with triumph when I realized the rabbit wouldn't be able to escape into his hole. I would attack him from the direction of safety. I suddenly saw the rabbit through the grass with my sharp eyes. "Come here you fluffy bunny!" I yipped as I leapt through the air. My paw missed the thing by inches and we were off. The grass battered at my face, but I didn't care as I ran after my prey. The rabbit, however, was faster than me and kept getting farther and farther ahead. The moment it went out of my sight, however, I heard the thing screech. I tripped over my front paws as I desperately tried to stop and ended up doing a roll though the grass.

I landed inches from the rabbit... and the trap it was caught in. I yelped and jumped back as soon as I managed to stand, my lips curling away from my teeth as I snarled at the trap. This wasn't some ordinary rabbit trap that the pack saw all the time. No, this was meant for much bigger prey... like us. The smell of metal attacked my nose and I shook my head to clear it. But it never would retreat. I looked in horror at the sharp spikes that had closed over the rabbit like teeth the moment it jumped in the center. It had been killed immediately. I backed up, still shaking my head. No other Hunters were over in this area, I would have to warn the others. If the traps were all the way to the East side, they could be everywhere over our territory. We hadn't seen activity like this since the late Alphas were caught in traps like this... I turned and bolted towards the direction of camp. All the others needed to hear about this immediately.

    Mother

I couldn't help but smile at Blade and Sophie. The pup made quick friends with everybody, but Blade was defiantly one of her favorite. I observed the two from my place on one of the sunning rocks just outside of the main camp. While, of course, there was no sun, it was a good viewing point to watch pack life below. At the Fighter's sudden position change (he had been curled in the corner like that since this morning), I stood as well and shook out my fur. "Thank you for watching her today, Blade. It gave me a break I defiantly needed," I barked as I jumped off of the sunning rock. The wolf looked up and nodded.

"It's my pleasure. Just let me know when you want me to take another day off my duties and I'll watch her again," he responded, gently shaking Sophie off as she bit at his ear.

"Sophie, enough. The other members will be home soon. Come up here so we can watch them return," I smiled, gesturing to the sunning rock.

"Awww Mom. You know I'm too short to get up there," she pouted, pawing at Blade's leg. I walked over to the two and picked the pup up by her scruff with my teeth. I knew she hated this, but the stubborn pup wouldn't listen any other way. "Come on! I'm 11! I'm too old for this!" she growled, squirming in my grasp. I held tight and jumped up on the rock, placing her on the hard surface.

"I bet the Hunters are bringing back a lot of food. I want you to report to me how much they have as soon as you see them," I barked, pointing my nose towards the treeline. With the new task, Sophie immediately became distracted. I laid down and nodded to Blade as he nodded back and retreated into the forest. He always did like going for runs.

I hated it when Mom though so little of me. She always treated me like a Pup! While I still was one, I had already been through a year of training and I could easily go out with the Hunters at this point too. But no one thought I was ready. Why was that? The Hunters were the best and I had always wanted to join their ranks since I had joined the pack. They were so cool and tough and unbeatable! I bet if we didn't have Fighters they could easily defend us! I eagerly watched the treeline, determined to be the first one to see the wolves emerge.

    Elite

"Were you really planning on leaving without me?" I asked, sighing as the Alpha turned around sharply. Honestly, she needed to become more aware or she was going to get caught. Like that list she just threw in the dumpster. I used that to write more check lists for other days we were here. AND if somebody found it and started asking questions...

"No. I was pretty sure you had left me. Like you did last time," She snapped, narrowing her eyes. Oh. I had forgotten about that. I sighed and took my glasses off, walking over to the dumpster. I cleaned them on the edge of my shirt before placing them once again on my face and picking the list out of the garbage.

"Well I didn't. And do you really simply throw away this evidence that could get us in trouble? We need to burn it, not simply throw. it. away," I coolly retorted, narrowing my eyes as well. I was treading on very dangerous ground here, with her being my superior. I could've sworn if we were in our wolf forms her ears would have went back and she would've snapped at me, demanding I back off. She did that every time I talked to her like this. She must've been in a good mood however, for she simply sighed and shook her head.

"I hate fire. Most of the others do too," She murmured, turning and walking towards the forest again, not seeing if I was following. I growled as her eyes flashed with pity as she turned. She only let me off the hook because of stupid pity. That always made me angrier. My history was nothing to judge me on, especially when none of it was my fault. I quickly caught up with her and whirled her around.

"I. don't. need. your. pity," I growled, my hand clenching into a fist. While a voice in the back of my mind kept wanting me to back off since Midnight had not deserved this and I was just in a bad mood, I ignored it.

"And I don't need your criticism. You want the lists burnt? Fine. That's your new job. But don't you dare challenge me like that. And while you are a high ranked wolf, you are still under me. So unless you want punishment, I suggest you go quiet until we get back to the others," she snapped, turning on me suddenly. I glared at her and thought about whether I should push further.

"I did not find any new shifters today," I simply stated through clenched teeth. She relaxed a little and nodded.

"That's good. We are almost to a month without seeing shifters. Hopefully it stays like that for a while. We can go home now," she answered, whirling around and storming off.

I looked through the trees, watching, waiting. I had been doing this all day and I was getting tired. I heard paw steps and turned around quickly, but it was just Blade going on his run. "Have fun, and don't get eaten." I teased. I looked back at the camp, I could see Midnight and Eclipse almost to the camp. "You better hurry if you want to be gone by the time we give our reports." I simply told him. I took one last look into the thick trees, nothing had happened all day. I simply sighed and nodded at Blade as I walked back to camp. When I finally reached camp, I sat down and waited for Alpha to ask us for our reports.

No one needed any help and everything was running fine so he just laid down and relaxed, waiting for Alpha and Eclipse to return. Surely enough they returned within a few minutes and he was ready to give his report.

I made my way around our pack's territory slowly to make sure I didn't miss anything unusual. There was a new alpha in one of the near by pack, so I decided to check if we could still count on that pack to be our ally. There was little exchange in words between us which made me a little wary about this new alpha. I would have to tell Midnight as soon as I got back to the rest of them. It wasn't unusual for new alpha's to be silent at first, but I had to make sure everyone was aware of this. After I checked in with this pack, I made my rounds once more to make sure the territory was safe. While I was doing my job, I saw a few other pack member hunting for food to bring back. I made sure to stay clear of them, so I wouldn't scare away their prey or target. My paws were slightly damp and muddy from the morning dew that had delevoped early this morning when I began scouting today. I perked my white ears up before lowering my head to the ground and sniffing around. Something was a little off. In this part of the territory, but I couldn't quite figure it out. Sniffing around a little more, I picked up the scent of a human. Not just any human though, one of the hunters. I quickly perked my head back up and knew I had to get back to warn Midnight right away. Without looking around to see if he was still around, I took off back towards the rest of the pack members in the camp.

My tail gently swayed behind me as I watched a few young rabbits play around in an open meadow. I remained low as I watched them carefully hoping not to scare them off. I didn't want to hurt these young rabbits, but the rest of the hunters depended on me to catch my own prey before we met back up. A group of young rabbits meant that there was more then likely a mother rabbit near watching after her young. Then it happened. The youngsters took off with their little white tails showing as a larger rabbit came into the opening. I perked my ears up quickly and knew it was the mother. This was my shot and I can't mess up or I will go back without prey again. Lowering myself to the ground, I steadily stalked forward before leaping out of the grass and landing just short of the rabbit. In the blink of an eye, she took off, so I took off after her hot on her tail. I growled to myself before picking up the pace to get closer to the rabbit. The mother rabbit tripped over her front paw and stumbled a bit, giving me the opportunity to knock her down. I pinned her to the ground with my front paws before I bent down and bit the squirming rabbit.

After both Eclipse and I were into the forest a ways, I held up my hand and looked around. No immediate danger of discovery, due to the fact no one else was around. I nodded and the Elite took the signal, quickly shifting into his wolf form. His ears were back as he waited for me and I could tell he was still angry at me. I sighed and also shifted. He always did this to me and I'd snap every once in a while, like what happened back in town. He would remain silent for a few days and then go back to pestering me. I shook my head at the thought and bounded through the brush, my sensitive ears picking up the thud of Eclipse's footsteps following me. It would take us only a few short minutes at this speed to return to the others.

I chuckled at Rose's comment before nodding my head to her in thanks for reminding me it was almost time to report. I then leapt out of view of the camp, my powerful legs working as I swiftly jumped over fallen trees and roots. I loved runs. Wolves could run for miles and I grew restless if I stayed at camp all day. After a few minutes, my ears picked up the familiar sounds of the creek and I headed for it. I could get a drink then return.

I don't think I had ever run as fast as I was now. Was my urgency really to tell Midnight? Or was it to get as far away from that horrible device as soon as possible? Even if it was a little bit of both, my head was whirling with what this meant for the pack. We couldn't possibly move our territory; it was protected and next to a town. Would we just have to wait for the hunters to find us? I ran past the meeting place the Hunters were supposed to get together around and head back. They could come back without me, especially with the information I held. Finally, I could smell the familiar scents of my pack mates and put on a burst of speed as I headed for the camp.

"Mom! I think I see someone!" Sophie yipped, bouncing up and almost falling off of the sunning rock. I raised my head from where they were rested on my paws when I noticed a shape moving quickly for camp. Only one, though. I stood and brought my ears forward in caution. Either Midnight or Eclipse was returning alone or something had happened. Once the shape got closer, I realized it was Brook. What was she doing back without the other Hunters?

My tail started wagging on its own when I realized it was Brook. She was a Hunter! That meant she was automatically awesome! At Mom's stance, however, I sat down in puzzlement. Why was she acting like something was horribly wrong?

"Come on Soph. Let's go greet Brook," Mom whispered, nudging me off the rock. Now I knew something was wrong. Her voice sounded funny. The Hunter arrived in the camp and flopped down, panting. She must've run a long ways.

"Brook?" Mom asked, approaching the she-wolf and nudging her with her nose.

Midnight and I made our way through the forest, our feet finding the familiar path to get back to camp. Right now I was thinking about enjoying a nice long nap on one of the sunning rocks... or somewhere where no one could bother me. Actually on second thought that sounded better. We were hit with familiar smells as we approached the camp, but something seemed off. The Alpha must've sensed it too for she picked up the pace. Staying right on her heels, my ears flattened down. Okay, what was the problem now?

I rushed back to the pack and picked up the familiar scent of the other pack members that were there. I picked up the pace a bit before I walked into the opening where the pack's camp started. Carefully looking around with brown eyes, I looked for Midnight so I could tell her my finds. It looked like one of the hunters also had to tell her something since she raced in looking for Midnight as well. My ears perked up in curiousity, wondering what she found out in the pack's territory. I watched as Midnight walked in with an eclipse. I decided to let the other wolf report her finds before I said anything to the alpha in case our findings were the same.

Now that I had the rabbit locked in my jaws, I made my way towards the meeting area to wait for the other hunters. I felt bad for going after the mother rabbit, but it looked like the younger rabbits were about ready to be weaned anyways. I set my kill on the ground and waited for the others to return from their trip. A few minutes passed before I picked up my rabbit and looked around once more to see if anyone was coming yet. Since I didn't see anyone, I walked towards the direct of the pack proud of my kill. It might have been small, but it was pretty good for me since I tend to over think things and miss out on the opportunity to bring the pack prey. When I walked into the main camp, I could tell something was off especially since Brook was back and it looked like she had something urgent to tell Midnight. Setting my prey down, I sat down and waited for Midnight to return.

The alarm clock went off for a second time, now I knew it was time to get up, but the bed felt so comfortable and welcoming. There was nothing on my schedule for today so why not stay in bed all day? It sounded like a great idea to me, but I knew I should probably do something instead of being lazy. I removed the covers and sat up to stretch out my arms before actually getting off my bed. Running my fingers through my dark hair, I slowly made my way to my apartment's kitchen to cook something up for breakfast. I rummaged through the fridge and found a slice of cheese and an egg before shutting the door. I took out a frying pan, set it on the burner and slowly let the pan heat up with butter melting on it. Once the pan was warm enough, I cracked the egg into the pan and let it cook slowly before I flipped it over to cook the other side. After it was cooked, I threw it on a toasted English muffin along with the cheese.

    { Awesome! Thank you }

It had finally grown dark, my favorite time of day. It was at this time that I could see the stars, enjoy the night noises, and change into a wolf without any humans knowing. While I enjoyed my human side now and then, my wolf was so much more fun. Not to mention hunting. That had its own rush in itself, and hunting as a human was never as fun since you had to use guns to do so. Hunting on all fours, running after your prey. Like I said, a rush.

As I headed towards the woods were our camp was nestled, a glanced around me to make sure I wasn't followed. The last thing I wanted to do was lead anyone to our camp. At the tree line, I allowed myself to change, grinning when I was done. "Finally!" Happily, I began to run towards camp, eager to see my pack mates once more.

Night time. Darkness. Shops closing up. This was the best time to get what I needed.

I had to stop and catch my breath as I rounded the corner of my little shed, glancing back and remaining silent to make sure I wasn't followed. Nighttime was the easiest time to steal some food, especially using my wolf form. As a wolf one night, and a kid the next, I wasn't tracked very easily. The last thing I needed was the horrible orphanage finding me and dragging back. I was more than content to live in my little shed. Here is could take care of myself, rely on myself, and do whatever I wanted.

Crawling through a small opening in the side wall, I quickly climbed into the blanket I had curled up as my nest. Even in my human form I slept here, though I didn't mind. I began to nibble on my current score of food, though it wasn't much. Was it ever though? Well, at least I won't be starving tonight. Maybe a bit hungry, but not starving.

    Alpha

My ears flicked forward as Eclipse and I entered camp. The Elite automatically sulked away, still hurt from our argument probably, but my attention was on the wolves at camp. Something was wrong. My calculating eyes flicked around and I spotted Brook, out of breath. Mist nudged her and the she-wolf ignored her as she saw me. "Midnight! There... are traps...ones meant for big...animals all the way...in the fields... to the east," she managed to get out as she jumped back up from her position on the ground. My ears flicked back now and I shook my head.

"How many?" I asked, taking a step forward.

"I only saw...one. But there could... be more," she stated as she caught her breath. I nodded in response and took a second to think. If traps were all the way to the east when the hunters were originally coming from the west, the traps could be everywhere. We would need to check immediately.

"Alright everyone, listen up," I barked, raising my voice. "I need three volunteers: one will take a group to the north to search for more traps, the second will take a group to the south, and the third will go into town in human form and see if they can find any info at all about the hunters. I will be leading a group to see if any more traps were recently placed on the west side," after this command, I lowered my voice. "Will you be willing to lead a group to the east side to look for more traps? Since you know where one already is?" I asked. Brook nodded and I rose my voice again. "Brook will take a group to the east to look for more traps. Any volunteers for the three spots or will I have to pick? Any questions, comments, or anything to add?"

I made it to the stream and took a nice long drink before turning back towards the direction of camp. Darn it. Midnight and the Elites would be back by now. This run had taken longer than usual. I listened to Midnight's orders, glancing around at everybody listening. There were still a few wolves out that would need to be informed, but I focused my attention on the ones here. When we did volunteer group things like this, we could pick our own group of wolves. We took turns choosing wolves one by one, but I started wondering who would be the best in the tall grasses of the fields? It would be hard to see a trap until you were right on it, and that wouldn't do.

I calmly watched the gathering, my mind reeling at the thought of traps around our territory. Sophie went out every other day to train with the Hunters! The thought of any of the pups getting trapped in one of those horrible devices had my ears flattened back. Of course, since I was a permanent Mother I couldn't volunteer, but I would definitely check around the camp just in case. The pups could go out of camp if accompanied by a Mother.

Traps! While I was an older pup and didn't have to be put to bed with stories anymore, many of the horrifying ones had tales of wolves and traps. I thought for the longest time they were a myth until I heard two of the adults talking about past wolves from our own pack (of all places) that had been caught in traps and even died. I cowered back in Mom, not even caring I was acting like me when I was a small pup.

Oh? Usually 'bad news' reported never caught my attention, but traps were a different story. I would quite like to study them... I never went around the gadgets in my human form due to all the bad omens the pack had associated with them (for good reason). But this would be a good opportunity. Especially to get all the details about this new... event.

  • Resika pads thew unknown wilderness her paw pads cracked from wandering. Her thirst having been slacken by a mud puddle a few fox lengths back. She had mourned the loss of her mother and father.

    (Memory flashback)

They had been a small pack, just having started like any other nomads falling in love. She used to have siblings but due to scarce prey her siblings had one by one stopped squirming. She alone had survived the brutal first hunger, her mother resorting to est her dead littermates to insure her survival.

She didn't know what had happened to her brothers but she knew of hunger and when milk finally returned. When her eyes opened she could at first make out only darkness. But soon her eyes had adjusted to the point of seeing a white light, she strived towards it like moth to flame. It was then she learned pain, a sharp nudge of her mother's nose kept her away from the light.

As time went on there was no longer the warm familiar scent guarding the light. She soon made her way to it and soon she saw that the world was much bigger. As she went to take a tentative step out she tumbled down the slope.

She kiyayed her hurt and pain, but no one but the birds heard. She was alone, but the pain was soon forgotten as her feet became steadier. She wanders threw the forest her paw pads soft on the unfamiliar ground.

She saw how hungry she looked and decided to take her back to the pack house and care for her then. She shifted quickly and took Resika into her arms.

  • Resika yelps and struggles slightly then stops moving. Her strength sapped by her adventures threw the woods. Soon she falls asleep in the two legs arms.

    (Dream)

Resika whines beside her siblings, the first sensation she felt was of suckling. She had entered the world in a rush, a firm tongue cleaning her white fur to the point she became very fluffy.

    (Current)

Resikas sides rise and far with the dream of her mother and her siblings. Loud nursing sounds were the only sound she was making. But as warmth spread threw out her paws and fut, she soon dozed into a dreamless sleep.

When resika wakes she looks around and doesn't notice anything familiar. The scents and sounds were different, she sat up and yawned stretching sorely.

  • So right now most the wolves are in the camp. Brook found a trap all the way over on the east side of their territory. The human hunters came from the west, so this means they have moved across the territory. Right now, Midnight is giving everyone their orders. Read below to see where we are at.

In other news, Resika was found by Dream and I think they are heading back to camp, but I'm not 100% positive.

Lolo looked down at the pup who stretched in the floor and smiled down at her. "Hey....I just found you. I'm going to look after you okay?" she gently picked her up in her arms, cuddling her to her chest to show that she was a shapeshifter and not a Hunter. "Can you shift yet?"

Rushing through the woods, Jen smiled greatly as she ran in her wolf form. However, deep down, she had the feeling that something wasn't right. She tried to brush it off as nothing. Jen knew she often worried quite a bit, and mostly on things that didn't need to be worried about. But this time, she just couldn't shake the feeling.

Her smiled as the camp came into view and slowed her pace. There was no need to go rushing into the camp. Her tail swaying, she made her way into camp to see that everyone seemed to be gathered. She also noted that Midnight was talking to those around her. "What's going on?" she asked as she came near the center of camp.

Jaxon nibbled on the food he had managed to steal, curled in the blanket he had laid on the floor. Life was so much easier as a wolf. He licked his jaws as his meal was finished then rolled on his back. Stretching out, he let out a low yawn and began to settle down.

It was time for him to get some rest. Tomorrow, he'd have to look around for more food again, and dodge anyone that would make him go to school or back to the orphanage. I'm not going back there. I'm a wolf and I belong on my own.Shutting his eyes, tried to settle down enough to sleep.

I turned at the sound of the voice to see Willow come into camp. "Brook found traps on the east side. Midnight is looking for threes volunteers: one to lead a group to the south to look for traps, one to the north, and the other to go into town in human form and see if they can find any information. She's leading a group to the west, and Brook is leading one to the east," I barked as the Hunter approached the clearing.
