  • There had been a lot on Ryan's mind lately, most of it surrounding Lucy's pregnancy. And yes, this stemmed from it too. It was because of the kits, but it was also something he should have done long ago. Slowly he moved towards her door, and knocked. Hard, loud. Confidently.

  • Sel had been trying (and failing) to rest when she heard a knock on the door. Lifting her head, she inwardly sighed. There was probably some leader thing she had to do, or some personal drama she had to handle. At least whoever it was knocked. "Come in."

  • Despite his confidence, he was nervous deep down. He should have done this long ago, yes, and there'd been a million reasons why he hadn't. For all his promises, that kind of commitment... "Hey." Ryan greeted, slipping into her room and shutting the door behind him. "I, uh, I wanted to ask you something."

  • Ah, great. Him. She wasn't too pleased by Ryan's presence, nor was she excited by the idea of him asking her a question. Be Clan-related. She hoped silently. "What?" It came out flatter than intended.

  • Should he wait or try and improve her mood? This would have the best chance for success if she was happy and feeling warm towards him, but he didn't want to lose his nerve. Besides, he didn't have a backup question would ask - someone like her would see right through him if he tried to make something up on the spot.

He padded forward, bringing his paw forward to show her a diamond ring - stolen, of course, a swipe worthy of a pirate Captain - while trying to look into her eyes that were suddenly fixated on the ring. "Will you marry me?" He asked, wishing he could kneel properly.

  • Honestly, even if he had caught her at her happiest, even if he'd asked this when she was pleased with him and liked him, the answer wouldn't change. Well, the phrasing might be slightly less harsh, but that was a pretty iffy might.

For a long few seconds, she stared at the ring in front of her, unable to look at Ryan as his words rang in her ears. He was asking her to marry him. He'd always said he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but he'd never asked her. She hadn't pushed it, because their relationship was still new enough that if they had gotten married, people would have thought how quick it was, how unlikely it was to last. But now he was asking her to marry him. With his babies in her belly.

For some reason, the first words out of her mouth were not yes or no or some variation of those. It wasn't an answer at all, but another question. "Is this what it was going to take for you to ask me? Me getting pregnant?" She met his gaze now, needing to know the answer, though it would have no bearing on what her decision was.

Once upon a time, a proposal would have overjoyed her. She would have said "yes, yes, a thousand times yes" and put on the ring and kissed him. She'd have run out to share the good news with everyone. But that time was long past, and all she felt towards him now was disdain. "No." For once, there was no cursing, no long-winded explanation that boiled down to a harsh rejection. Just calmly... no. She wouldn't do it.

  • It seemed like a mini eternity that past while Lucy stared at the ring, saying nothing, lost in her head. His tail twitched, and he had to resist the urge to move more. Finally she spoke, but it wasn't an answer. "No." He said, not really thinking his response through before giving it. "I mean... I'd have asked you at some point, I just... Marriage ruined our parents." Lucy's mother's life had been ruined the moment her father came into it, when he trapped her in matrimony with no way to escape. And, well... According to Ryan's mother, his folks had been happy before they'd gotten married, but after that everything went downhill.

He didn't want that for him and Lucy.

"No." The words felt like a punch to the gut, a simple, crystal clear rejection. She didn't feel the need to waste anymore breath to explain why, or any of that. She just said no. "Wh-" He started to ask "what" or "why", he didn't even know because as soon as he started to ask for unnecessary clarification, he stopped. He took a deep breath, releasing it in what very much sounded lie a sigh. "Th-that's ok. We can start slow." Ryan said, still trying to make this work out.

  • Unsurprisingly, Sel's reaction to his justification as to why he never proposed before this was not pleasant. "So because our parents had shitty relationships, that means we will?" Well, they had, but that was besides the point. "You think we wouldn't have been able to get through it together?" She glared at him. Maybe he'd been turning into a mix of both of their fathers, with the abuse and manipulation, and maybe it would have ended in a shitstorm. But he was the one that always insisted they could get through anything, that they'd be together forever.

And of course, his response to her rejection didn't make matters better for him. "We aren't starting at all, Ryan. It was a one night stand. Do you know why it's called that? Because one night is all I can stand." She watched the words hit home with satisfaction. "Just stop pushing and leave me alone. You're just wasting your time."

  • He swallowed and glanced away from her. "No - that's not it." He didn't know how to explain this, this fear that they would fall apart as soon as they promised not to. But who was he kidding? They'd already been falling apart for a long time. "What we already had was good. What if marriage would have ruined it?" Too much of a good thing was a bad thing, right?

"We aren't starting at all, Ryan. It was a one night stand. Do you know why it's called that? Because one night is all I can stand. Just stop pushing and leave me alone. You're just wasting your time." The words hit him, hard. He swallowed again, but still wasn't ready to give up. "Lucy. Sel..."

  • She shook her head. She knew in hindsight that marrying Ryan would have been the worst thing she could have done in hindsight, and she didn't allow him to have any power over her, she didn't let him hurt her any more... But still. He'd never asked. "Forget it."

She'd started to leave the room, needing to get away from him, but froze midstep when he said her name. "My name is apt in many ways, but I am not so self destructive that I'll ever go back into a relationship with you." She said harshly.
