Scientist begin their search for a "cure-all" solution. Many experiments are currently being preformed in a private lab. No one really knows where this lab is located, but rumors are it is said to be hidden away in the mountains. These experiments are currently being conducted on volunteers only. These volunteers are said to be those who are terminally sick with only a short time to live. That's all that we have received at this time.

    ▲ November 22, 2025

The lab has decided to make it known that after multiple tried experiments, they believe they are on the verge of a break through! The head scientist, Mr. Nicholas Archie, has stated that "within a matter of years, we won't have to worry about illnesses or disabilities". He believes his work will change the world and help all those who suffer.

    ☢ July 16, 2027

After complete silence from the lab, stories of what goes on inside have begun to leak out. None of the rumors are pretty. However, one sticks out among all of them. It is said that those who were subjected to failed experiments and survived are being held away in hopes to return them to their 'normal' selves. After many attempts to get answers, the scientists who were questioned repeatedly refused to give any comments on the rumors.

    ☣ December 15, 2027

A distress call has been released from the lab to the government. It has not been told why the call was sent out, or what it is for, but all of humanity is on edge as they await answers. There has been no update on the experiments or "cure-all", and no one from the lab has spoken of them. The scientists' families have all seemed to clam up as well, claiming to know nothing. Some have even disappeared, said to have relocated away from their home towns or current living areas.

    ☣ March 3, 2028

Sightings of strange creatures have been released to the public! Citizens all over have claimed to see creatures that walk, and resemble humans, but act wild and vicious. Some claim that these sightings are simply tricks and attentions for fame, while others have begun to take them seriously. Any pictures offered of these creatures are blurred, either by the creature's or the photographer's movements.

    ☠ March 17, 2029

The end of humanity seems to be upon us. They call is the Cringe, and it seems to be spreading at a rapid pace. No one knows how to stop it, and soon there will be nothing left. There are more rumors of cure, possibly left by the deceased scientists, but that means searching for a lab that no one knows for sure if it exists. So those who are left fight for survival, praying that their days are longer than their nights. Run, fight, hide.

    { Current Data }-

    The Cringe

The creatures that now roam the land - the failed experiments - possesses graying-blue skin and tattered cloth taken from prey or found - little to no hair - razor sharp teeth - black saliva - weaknesses: unknown - seem to possess a dislike of fire - able to be killed with a blow to the head - more active at night and in dark spaces

    The Fever

Comes after a bite from the Cringe - a seemingly unstoppable sickness - spread varies depending on age and strength of affected one - the area begins to turn black in beginning stages followed by pain, confusions, nausea - Fever attacks the blood - near the ending stages all visible veins in skin are black; loss of conscientiousness

    The Lab

Location unknown - said to be in the high mountains - possible holding place of The Cure

    The Cure

Rumored end of the spread - possible false hope

    { Forecast & Updates }

    Current season: Fall

    Weather: Cloudy; possible rain

Temperature: Day time is around 65°; Night time dips to 38°

Updates: The Cringe number is steadily growing. Small groups of humans have been formed, but they are few and spread far between. It is better to be with partners than alone, and it is best to find shelter before night sets. But it's up to you to take that gamble.

  • Nickolas Reeves

Another night has slowly passes, and the sun is finally making its appearance.

Nick sat on the crumbled wall of a building, three stories above ground. From here, he has a pretty good view of the area, and everything that may be crawling around. He had already spotted several Cringe through the night, though he and Isabella remained undetected as they were deathly silent. Now, as the sun rose to spread its light over the deserted streets, he knew the beasts would be shying away to find shelter in the shadows.

Drawing a deep breath, Nickolas stretched his sore back, setting his gun down beside him. He had come to learn to never go anywhere without it. He rubbed his eyes, feeling sleep tugging at his limbs. Its been weeks since he had actually slept more than a few mere hours. But he wouldn't let it slow him down. He had more important things on his mind than sleep. Besides, once he was up and moving around, he'd be awake and fine.

Glancing back, he noticed little Isabella still asleep on the tattered blankets they had been able to recently find. It was a nice score for her, considering she wouldn't have to sleep on the ground anymore. As much as he hated the idea, Nick knew that he would have to wake her up. They needed to keep moving. They had already spent three days here and he was antsy. They couldn't get too comfortable in one place or they would be in deep danger.

Pushing himself up off the side of the wall, he set his feet on the floor, making his way to his sister. He couldn't let her remain in a dangerous spot. She was the only thing he had left, and he wasn't about to lose her.

    Isabella Reeves

Her body was curled in tight on itself, clutching the thin blankets to her little body as if her life depended on it. Her hair laid out behind her, her eye lashes fluttering on her cheeks as she dreamed. Her frame was small, smaller than it normally should be for a girl her age. But what would you expect? She's a little girl in a world that could kill you at any moment. Food is a luxury now a days.

She felt a shake and moaned out loud, swatting at open air. She could hear a deep chuckle come through her sleepy haze and felt another shake. "Come on Izzy. It's time to wake up." She shook her head as she heard Nickolas, curling in tighter. "Noooo," she moaned, as she swatter again. This time she felt her hand connect with Nick, hearing him chuckle again.

"You're not even trying," She heard Nick say as she felt him take hold of her hand. His hand was so much bigger than her own, and it was the only thing that actually made her feel safe anymore. She huffed and turned onto her back, rubbing her eye with her free hand. "I'm not ready to try," she countered, before releasing a yawn. She was not a morning person, even at her young age. She dropped her free hand and opened her eyes finally to look at Nick. He was shaking his head and grinning down at her, holding her hand against his chest.

"Come on, lazy bones. I'll have breakfast ready soon." With that, he dropped her hand and stood up, walking away to the horrible excuse of a fire pit they had managed to throw together. Isabelle threw her arms over her eyes and shut them once more, moaning again. It was time to get up, and she jut didn't want to.

  • As the world continued to turn. A man in a dirty duster and hood stalked across the rooftops of the city. He was currently a top a 40 story monolith to the old world. He appeared to be pacing back and forth. Not far from him was a Mosin-Nangant bolt action rifle, it was leaning on the lip of the roof. He would stop and snap his head to the side as he caught movement.

A couple of punk looking survivors were sneaking through the traps he had set for any Intruders. The morons had been trying to find him and his stashes all week. But of course they went getting any farther then the tripwires. They weren't smart enough to win this battle.

The man would grab his rifle and shouldered it comfortably. He then flipped up his mask and rest his scruffy cheek against the wood stock as his golden optics focused it's view into the scope. He'd then located the bandits again and smirk as he sighted on on the leader. He then let out a deep breath and caressed the trigger.

The rifle boomed. It's report probably heard for miles as the 7.62x59R bullet hit the man in the head. Dropping him like a sack of bricks. Causing his friends to recoil in disgust as blood splattered them. Of course the recoil was their demise. One of the two men following hit his hand on one of the man's Tripwires causing the ignition of the nail bomb IED planted on the dash of the car behind them. It exploded gloriously as the two were sent sprawling from the blast. Both of them clearly dead due to the shockwave and shrapnel.

Hey...he put up warning signs for a reason.

  • A lanky male with fading green hair was standing beside the pond. The water's edge was receding from its banks; a good rainstorm would be nice, though his makeshift home probably wouldn't survive it. It was a shabby treehouse he had constructed in the gnarled branches of a sturdy oak. It wasn't much of a home, but it kept him hidden and safe. Jackie, his soft sigh stirring the silent morning air around him, knelt down to lift a relatively flat stone. He straightened once more, took aim, and skipped it across the water. One, two, three, four, five… It skimmed the surface five times before sinking into the shallowing depths below. He did this a few more times with different stones, but none of them reached a higher score. With an amused smirk, he shook his head to clear his mind, his hair shifting into his celestial blue eyes. Doing activities like skipping rocks made him nostalgic for the simpler times. Before him moved to America. Before he was alone. Once he cleared his line of vision, he glimpsed at the glare off the clear water before turning towards the disintegrating town.

Nick bent over the fire as he moved the coals around, urging it to start up once more. He needed to get food into Isabella. She was small enough already, and her becoming smaller was not going to help them. He could tell that this experience has taken quite the toll on the young girl, her frame becoming more bone than anything else. She had acquired slight muscle from the constant activity they endor, but other than that, some days he was afraid she would simply blow away.

When the fire began to come to life, he set a small can of ravioli onto a rock nearby, watching it carefully to ensure that the can didn't catch. Glancing over, he watched as Isabella finally began to move around, seeing her motions as slow and clumsy. He smiled slightly, though his heart jumped when he heard a gun shot.

Jumping to his feet, he quickly grabbed his gun and raced to the opening of the building wall, placing his body just to the side of the opening. Looking back at Isabella, she was already racing to a place to hide, her sleep having vanished in mere seconds. Grasping his gun, he peeked his head around the wall, his gaze falling into the pattern of sweeping over the land around them.

Though he had heard the gunshot, he couldn't see anything at all. He stood motionless for a few more moments, his body rigid and ready, but he could see no movement or figures from where they were perched. Perhaps whoever did it had a gun that echoed well in these streets. It would've surprised him...

    "Nick...?"

Turning his head, he could see Isabella peaking out from her hiding place, a worried and fearful look taking over her normal happy and carefree gaze. He finally allowed his body to relax, turning towards the frightened girl. "It's alright," he said as he began to walk back towards the fire. "Whoever it was must still be some ways out." However, this only furthered his reasons to get moving.

    Isabella Reeves

She didn't want to get up. All she wanted to do was sleep and escape this world that she now lived in. But the smell of the fire starting up made her stomach rumble. She had gotten used to smelling it before a meal, so the mere smell made her too hungry to simply lay there anymore.

Sitting up, she rubbed her eyes and stretched her body, sore from the hard ground. However, she didn't really mind as she was growing used to it. She could hardly remember what a proper bed felt like anyways. At the thought, she touched the necklace that hung around her neck, trying to bring up an image of her parents. However, each time she tried, they grew fuzzier and fuzzier. Weren't twelve year olds suppose to be able to recall them easily?

She was brought out of her sleepy thoughts by a gunshot and Nickolas's hasty movements towards his gun. Knowing this motion all too well, she quickly jumped to her feet and ran to a nearby rubble pile, dropping to her hands and knees to squeeze through. There was just enough room to turn around, but not much more.

She remained completely still and completely quiet like Nickolas had always told her to do when things like this happened. She remained that way for what seemed like forever until she finally peaked out. Nickolas was standing at the wall, his gun in hand, but he hadn't moved to take aim like he usually does at a sign of threat. "Nick?" She had kept her voice soft and gentle, just in case she wasn't suppose to be out yet.

Seeing his body relax and him turning around made her relax as well. "It's alright. Whoever it was must still be some ways out." Only after hearing this did she begin to move from her hiding spot. As she stood, she dusted rubble and dirt from her pants, though it wasn't helping much since her clothes were covered in dirt anyways.

  • Jackie would stumble in surprise as a cacophony of faint sounds reached his ears. He blinked repeatedly. He recognized the first sound as a gunshot, but the other... it sounded like an explosion? Though he heard the noises, the male saw nothing but partially destroyed buildings. However, the sounds did not detour his plans. In fact, he now felt compelled to see the town. Something was happening there, and he wanted to know what. He would have to be stealthy, but that was no problem. Jack moved swiftly through an alleyway, the only sound being made was the pebble his shoe kicked away. He was far from where the action had happened. He abruptly froze. He had heard something. Was it… voices? No, that was impossible. Wasn't it? Slowly and cautiously, he continued forward, skirting the shadows of the buildings.

  • Anastasia groaned as she got off the uncomfortable mattress, awakening. "Alright... Twigs? You awake?" She did get a response, but it was just "bubba." "Alright tyke." she frowned slightly at their food stores. Raiding the nearby grocery store would be easy in theory, but most likely it would be devoid of food. Well, maybe there's medical supplies... The girl thought to herself, before shuffling through her backpack to give herself and Branch a breakfast of bread and a soft cheese. she washed it down with some wild blueberries and water, giving her sister a water bottle. "Alright." Anastasia muttered to herself, slipping on the baby harness and hoisting her sister into it so that she was being carried. "We're gonna go get some groceries, how does that sound?" she asked the toddler on her stomach. a series of quiet, but excited blubbering noises followed.

    Feel free to jump in

  • The sun was slowly rising above the horizon, the air still crisp and cool from the night before. The buildings casted long shadows in the morning light. Within the shadows a small boy stumbled, sluggish and exhausted from a night spent alone. His skin was dark with filth and dirt and he seemed to melt into the shadows of the town, away from sight. The echo of a gunshot followed by a blast pulled Darwin from his daze. He straightened his spine and strained his hearing. It didn't sound near by, but it still put him on edge. In a way, it gave him hope. There were people in this town-- even if they didn't seem friendly. Moving quicker, he turned the corner and a grocery store came into his vision. This is dumb he thought to himself, knowing no food would be found. Supermarkets like these were ransacked when the disease kicked off; there was no reason this one would have any food now. Still, he pushed the door open, a small chime echoed through the seemingly abandoned building, making him jump. Darwin clutched a small dagger close, more for comfort than anything.

He was thankful for the sun's rays shining through the windows, which gave him a sense of what the building looked like. He couldn't see any sickos*. There was a movement in his peripheral vision and without thinking he was behind a shelf, tense and ready to run. It was a girl. She was short haired and holding a toddler. Darwin raised his eyebrows, it was a long time since he had seen such a young kid. The boy opted to stay hidden, he didn't know what the girl was capable of doing and didn't want to put himself in harms way. Maybe if she found him, he'd be able to tag along. That was wishful thinking and he knew it, but he could still hope. For now he would stay hidden, though.

*sickos: I personally like it when a character calls the enemy by different names so Dar is going to call them 'sickos' even though many call them The Cringe. If this isn't ok I'll change it!

  • The girl comforted her sister for another moment before clutching her dagger slightly tighter. She scanned the area, sensing something was nearby, but couldn't find it immediately, so she just dashed into the store and looked around. Anastasia let out an exasperated sigh, then grabbed some Band-Aids, some canned food and some baby toys to keep branch happy during these dark days. "Jelly, Candy... Wait. Candy!" She grinned, stuffing a pocket of her pack with candy before drinking some more of her water. By comparison to most, she was grabbing a measly amount, but she knows how to be hungry, and could hunt, so she would be fine. All that mattered was keeping Branch fed.

Heading over to the water, she hesitated a moment, sitting down. "Man, this isn't so bad..." She fished around for some iodine tablets, but found none, and cringed. "Crap. We're really running low, aren't we?" The girl knew there were none in the store, so she walked out. A twitch in her periphery brought her to her senses. "Alright branch, we're gonna play hide and seek. I'll seek, you hide. Now go." Her sister his rather well for a toddler, but Anastasia knew where she was. Drawing her dagger, she walked towards where she had seen the movement. She pushed some debris out of the way to see what it was, knife in her mouth as she did so, before she saw him. A small boy, of about eight nine. Her expression softened slightly, but she did not put back her weapon, for the boy was also armed. "Answer my questions and nobody gets hurt, kid. Alright, who are you and why are you here?"

  • Darwin watched the pair as they scavenged the shelves of the store. He inwardly groaned when the girl had found food. He should have searched around the store earlier-- that could have been his. He noted that she hadn't taken much. Maybe there would be more left? The two had spent no time getting supplies and began to make their leave. He began to stand from a crouch in hopes of quickly grabbing the food once they left. Darwin stopped suddenly. She saw him. He pressed himself against the shelf, praying he appeared hidden in the shadows. The boy watched as she placed the toddler on the ground and made her way towards him.

Darwin briefly thought of running out of there, escaping. She had a toddler so he bet she wouldn't follow him. Well, it was too late for that now anyway. She was upon him, armed with a dagger. "Answer my questions and nobody gets hurt, kid. Alright, who are you and why are you here?"

The boy bit his lip, staying silent. Darwin glanced at her up and down, she was tall and muscular. She was a survivor. Darwin knew he should say something-- after all he had come here to find another group. He opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again. "Darwin," a pause, "Was just looking for food..." In the back of his mind he knew the girl wouldn't take his simple response as a cue to put her weapon down, so he continued as he slowly lowered his dagger. "No one's with me. I'm alone." This girl looked smart enough to know that a measly nine-year-old didn't have the force to deal any great damage.

  • She gave a nod. "Alright. You sure you're alone?" She asked him, the threat gone from her voice. she lowered the dagger to her waist, giving a signal to Branch to come back out. Finally, she shook her head and sighed, sheathing the small sword and putting it away. Darwin. Alright then. You look pretty hungry, you need the food more than I do." She fished through her backpack to find a small container of blueberries and handed it to him. "Come inside here, it's safer not to be out here. Besides, you're alone. What harm can it do?" The girl chuckled for a moment, before she picked up branch again and headed through the door to a nearby house.

  • Nickolas Reeves {Twenty-two}

Nick smiled as he checked the ravioli for Isabella again, seeing it had become warm and soft. He took the can gently from the stove, wrapping a small stripe of cloth around it so the younger girl wouldn't burn her hands. "Alright, Izzy. Eat up." He handed her the can of food and watched as she sat and began to eat. Good. Now what do we have left?

Standing from his spot, Nicholas went over to the bags that rested against the wall. His bag was larger than Isabella's, holding more of the necessities than her. Lifting the worn and tattered bag, he looked inside at the supplies they had left. A few cans of food, some packages of food, and a sorry excuse of a med kit. Sighing, he pushed this aside to see that their water bottles were running low, and they were out of batteries. Crap...

He lifted Isabella's bag and had a look through. They were still good on matches, though their boxes of ammo was on the lesser side. Hitting a couple stores would do us some good, he thought, trying to figure out which way they needed to go.

    Isabella Reeves {Twelve}

Isabelle had been combing her fingers through her hair when she heard Nickolas speak again. "Alright, Izzy. Eat up." It didn't take long for her to scamper over, eager for some food. After he had wrapped it up, she gingerly took it and began to eat. She ate slowly, enjoying each bite as she knew it may be a while before they were able to eat again.

They would be leaving soon. That wasn't exactly what Isabella enjoyed, but she knew it had to be done. She sighed slightly and looked at the gap of the wall. They would leave their little home to find someplace new. But that also meant the potential of running into those creatures again. Shivers went through her at the thought and she tried to focus on her food once more.

  • Jordan had always felt indifferent to cities. He had been born near one, true. He'd spent a lot of time in a whole bunch of them, also true, but he never lived in the city, and therefore had never really felt very strongly to them. Now, after what everyone just called The Cringe, Jordan missed the city. Perhaps an odd thing to feel, considering he was in a city right now, but it wasn't the buildings he missed. The atmosphere, the people, were all gone now. It felt like one big ghost town, just like everything else. Just another thing The Cringe had taken and warped into something it had never been before.

After eating a meager breakfast, Jordan made his way down the long flights of stairs back down to ground floor. Anytime he could, Jordan made his lodgings as high up as he could. It made him feel safer, even though he knew logically, it wasn't safer than any other place. Ah, well, it stretched his legs out. Kept him in shape. Besides, just because he felt a little safer above the city didn't mean he treated it as such. He always made sure he had an escape plan, a blockade and supplies for an emergency.

The streets were, predictably, empty when Jordan pushed the door to the building open. He kept his ax close, one he'd found in an abandoned fire department. Surprisingly, that building hadn't been stripped. Guess people only thought about grocery, department and convenience stores when they thought about getting supplies. Jordan started off through the empty streets, staying alert and ready. He kept an eye out for any places that looked like they might hold supplies. He wasn't running that low, but an extra haul was never taken for granted. Jordan could happily haul the weight around.

  • The speed in which the hostility in her voice vanished surprised him. Darwin nodded, "I'm sure." As the girl sheathed her dagger, he stood from his crouched position. His eyes were like saucers as she handed him the package of blueberries. Food was luxury these days-- and fresh fruit like this was almost unheard of. Darwin almost felt bad taking this food from the two. He repressed the thought though, he hadn't lived this long by refusing to take things he needed to survive. Darwin muttered a thank you and took the package with two hands like Granddad had told him to do. He opened the container and popped a few in his mouth once the girl had turned away. He trotted after her and soon they were in a nearby house. "What's you and the titch's names?" he asked once inside, gesturing to the girl and small toddler.

  • "I'm Anastasia. This is my little sister, Branch." She replied, setting the child back down. The toddler climbed into the fluffy pillowcase she chose as a sleeping bag. "My parents ran away and they never came back for us, so i had to become the main supporter for us both. Branch is studying camouflage, and once she turns 5 I plan to train her in knife fighting, and hunting with supervision if it's possible." Anastasia rubbed her neck nervously. "I know it seems like a lot, but you have to grow up fast or you don't get to grow up at all." The girl said grimly. Branch was tugging on Darwin's pants leg, saying "twigs" over and over again to get his attention.
