Paradise. That wonderful place where all your fears and worries simply melted away... How long had you dreamt of such a place? How many nights had you searched for that, a place where freedom reigned? It never occurred to you that you might never find it. It wasn't until you found yourself inhaling saltwater, as the rich, deep blue waves of the ocean tossed you around, that you realized how ill-fated that dream had been. The sea was swallowing you, and no matter how hard you kicked, each sloshing motion twisting your stomach with sickened agony, you knew there was no escaping your fate. No amount of prayer would save you. You were doomed to drown here, devoured by the ocean. So, you closed your eyes, and took one last breath of air, before you were plunged beneath the surface. You expected to die there, in the belly of the sea, but as each moment passed, the water around you grew still and quiet, until the only sound you could hear was the beating of your frantic heart, roaring loudly in your ears. Then, darkness came, and you saw and felt no more.
You awoke to something prodding your side. "Oh. You're alive," a voice chimed, sounding almost relieved and disgusted at the same time, as if it were glad you weren't dead, yet unhappy that it had touched you at the risk that you were. You groaned, struggling to keep your eyes open. But somehow you managed, and taking the chance to see who had spoken, you slowly turned your head, biting back a wince as your head throbbed, and everything spun all at once. Staring at you with a cheeky grin, was a jaguar, and a male by the looks of it. "I thought I'd have to bury you, and I hate burying dead things," he cackled, but you didn't share his amusement. He appeared to notice this, and his grin seemed to grow even more. "You look like hell, mate. Did you get into a fight with a shark, or something?" When you simply narrowed your eyes at him, he let out a laugh, before his face straightened, and he rolled his shoulders in a shrug. "Eh, fine. I see how it is. You're one of those, are you?" Shaking his head, the jaguar took a moment to look you over; you felt his eyes rake over your pelt, and you couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable under his gaze. "I'm Kace, by the way," he was saying, and you nearly winced as that same cheeky grin returned to his lips. "You look like you could use some help, mate. Who better than me to bring you back to—oh, right! You're in PirateClan territory, in case you were wondering." As if lost in thought, Kace turned his head away from you to look into the distance, and you took a moment to take in your surroundings. You were laying on a beach, surrounded by a thick jungle. "Let's get you back to camp, before that shark comes back." You barely had a moment to process what he meant, your mind reeling from being stranded with some crazy jaguar, when Kace laughed again at his comment, and you suddenly wished to be back in the sea.
"Kace, please don't annoy it to death," said a new voice. "It's already been through enough, without you driving it insane." Padding up beside the jaguar, was an Eurasian lynx with a golden-brown pelt, and handsome golden eyes. He seemed younger than Kace, and though he spoke about 'annoyance', he seemed to be enjoying the way his fellow feline was behaving. "The name's Ryker, kid. Let's see if you've got what it takes to be a pirate."
HISTORY -
Cats have always been welcomed on ships. When the humans began to set sails on the high seas, it was quickly learned that rats were vicious invaders. The domesticated felines were given noble jobs, hunting out the rodents hiding beneath decks. It benefitted both species, to the point of a cat not being aboard would bring bad luck. Pirate ships were commonly the most infested with the rats, hence, cats were more popular than parrots. Myths were derived from the symbiosis, such as throwing or losing a cat overboard would bring upon a fatal storm to the crew, and if the cat survived, it would still bring several years of bad luck. The feline companions were said to harbor wind magic in their tails, and were often used to detect the weather for pirates and sailors alike. The cat licking its fur against the grain; a hailstorm was approaching. Sneezing predicted rain, and a fidgeting cat was a result of brisk winds on the horizon. Because of their usefulness, cats began to spread across the world, far from their origin lands of Egypt. While many settled in the mainland, forming societies and evolving their own systems similar to humans, a particular pirate ship deviated from the path of the others. It was a terrible hurricane that night. No one could see a whisker's length in front of their faces, and if one let go of their makeshift anchor to the deck, they would of been swept away by the North Wind and drowned by Mother Nature in the salty sea. The humans couldn't bare the strain much longer, and the captain abandoned the ship, leaving behind their loyal felines to die in the wreck. Whatever heavenly force that is out there was feeling merciful that day, and guided the wayward ship to an uncharted isle. Only a few cats were lost, and the castaways were wary and unsure of the alien landscape before them. A brave soul, once named Patch by a crew member, comforted his colleagues, and organized bands of cats to investigate the rainforest that surrounded the beach. One party discovered a cave hiding away another pirate ship, although it was decrepit and beached. Patch arranged for the remains of their shipwreck to be brought to the cavern, for building supports and dens. While he refused to lead the group, he helped design the hierarchy of the forming clan, basing the structure off of their old crew. Patch appointed his mate, Cassis, to be the Captain, while he became the first Surgeon. It wasn't until the group grew in numbers that the ideas of Master ranks was put into action.
Wild cats from the jungle took interest in the small group, and while some showed aggression, others came to merge, coining the name PirateClan after the joking jeers about where these house cats said they came from. Since they couldn't decide a better term to call themselves, the name was settled upon. After even more exploration, PirateClan discovered a lighthouse, and after a horrific hurricane, Cassis created the rank of Forecaster, specialized cats who would watch the skies for signs of danger.
Generations passed, and many Captains lead, some wise, while some wicked. Many cats continue to be washed up on shores, and are taken into the clan, and many cats are born every season. PirateClan continues to grow, opening up the ages for a new era.
TRADITIONS & BELIEFS -
- Walking the Plank: When a member of PirateClan commits a serious crime that is against the rules or betrays the clan they'll be forced to walk the plank as punishment. Any prisoners may suffer the same fate.
- Cadet Ceremonies: When the young of the clan are old enough to become cadets they'll go through a ceremonial process in which they'll receive a special skull pendant in which will be colored according to a certain attribute which the cadet possesses. Their chosen mentor will receive a matching pendant. They both will also get a chain for these pendents so that it can be worn around their necks. Carpenter chains will be gold, Gunner chains will be silver, Striker chains will be bronze, and Surgeon chains will be nickel. It's a myth that if a cadet or their mentor accidentally loses their pendant neckless then they will experience bad luck throughout training.
- Monthly Treasure Hunts: Once every month on the night of the full moon a patrol of PirateClan cats will be chosen by the Captain to leave the ship and venture out into unfamiliar lands to search for actual treasure, or to steal treasure from other clans. If this patrol doesn't return by dawn the next morning, another group will be sent to find them just in case something bad happened.
- Duels: Held weekly, duels are not a thing to promote violence and hatred towards one another, but rather a way to train, provide entertainment, and build strength. Anyone can become a dueler if they want to, but as soon as they sign up to be one they are expected to train to spar whenever they have free time. On the day of the duels, all the duelers will be randomly paired up with a partner to spar, and judges will decide who wins these matches. Every time a dueler wins, they will receive a colored pin according to what "level" they had just accomplished. (will be sort of like in martial arts with belts, the color key as well as duel rules are yet to come)
- Parrot Companions: Many parrots can be found in the territory which PirateClan resides in, however some of the parrots tend to take a liking to specific cats of the clan. If lucky, a pirate will be chosen by a parrot to be its master. This is an uncommon occurance in young and happens most with adults, however occasionally there will be times when a young will be chosen by a parrot. If this happens, then it's a sign that the young will grow up to be very respectable.
The Clan is allowed to believe in whatever religion they desire.
TERRITORY-
The territory of PirateClan is rather majestic, referring to its namesake with several pirate-themed lands.
PirateClan's camp is isolated in a large-sized cave , an enormous shipwreck inside. The wreckage is settled upon a small river that enters the cave's mouth, surrounding the debris like a little moat. Most of the pirates live in the bunkers of the ship, though a number of them stay in the cottages around it. The shipwreck contains enough space to fit the Captain's deck , Quartermaster's room , First Mate's bunk , a small carpenters ' cot , a rather roomy gunner quarters , and a little surgeons' sanctuary . Beneath the housing floor, there is a vast barge for festivities. Rallies (meetings) are also held on this floor. The very base of the ship contains the Sharkbait (prisoners)'s caddy .
Outside the ship, several cottages line the walls of the cave. These cottages are normally occupied by the rest of the clans. Retired pirates, mothers, children, strikers, and various others dwell here, where they are safe and do not travel with the rest of the pirates. Some dwellings are dedicated to the HP pirates' family. The cave itself is patterned with vines that crawl up to the ceiling where gigantic stalagmites hang.
Beyond the cave lies a beach-like scenery. It opens up to the sea, where the river in the cave originates. The beach has a glaringly bright lighthouse that houses the forecasters' sentries and is surrounded by a vast tropical jungle where odd, mystical-like creatures thrive. In the jungle, strikers can find scale-skinned birds or feathered rabbits, as well as the original and ever basic mouse, hare, deer, etc. Some prey in these parts of the territory are unedible for the pirates, and some can only be devoured by the treacherous predators that also live there. The full depths of the jungle are yet to be explored, therefore strikers, especially newly appointed ones, often stay by the beach and outskirts of the jungle where they find more pleasant prey.
