I'm having trouble understanding the coding in fancyposts, and I would like to code my own, but I'm struggling to the point where I might need someone to help.
Could someone explain it in a simple way for me to understand?

Like Immy, I'm also happy to have a thread teaching you if you need! But I'll try and give you a basic run down here.
All codes from this point on have to always have a closing tag. - and for the record, without all the spaces I'll be throwing in to keep it from actually making a code c:
In order to start a fancypost code you write [ fancypost=' CODE HERE'] [/ fancypost]
It's also a good habit to start remembering to close off all your templates right now- eventually you'll have more complicated stuff that needs closing tags elsewhere but just keep track! otherwise it breaks very very unhappily
I always like to essentially think of it as a conversation- and obviously I"m not actually a coder so take that with a grain of salt, but it's an easy way to remember it!
'I want this fancypost to be "Everything that I put inside these quotes" or fancypost = "this please"
So what else?
Well, you'll probably want a height, a width, maybe a background color!
All heights have to use percentage codes now, which can be a little tricky to get exact measurements that you want, but easy enough to figure out after a while! As, percentages sort of say, for example, "Take 20% of the allotted screen side and fill it with this code" (or 50%, 70%, whatever number)
so on mobile, this is why templates work- because instead of a fixed sizing, it says 'with this amount of screen, fill 20% of it'. So while posts might be a little squished on mobile because of it, we can still read it because it only takes up 20% of the screen. Anyway!
So, let's start with sizing!
[ fancypost=' height:X%; Width: X%;' ] [/ fancypost]
Where 'X' is any value between 1-100
Now, Semi-colons essentially put breaks in inbetween each little section of code. It's like a sentence. 'I want this fancypost to have a height of X%. It will have a width of X%' It won't sound like 'i want this fancypost to have a height of 30% width of 30%;' because that's just confusing!
Now it doesn't matter which code goes first- I could do width, background color, height, border, the fancypost doesn't care, so long as you're careful about what you're typing for that specific code.
Right, let's add a background color and then we can test it out!
the code for a background is very simple. It's denoted as: background: COLOR
In a code, that'll look something like this
[ fancypost =' height:X%; Width: X%; background:COLOR;' ]
Now let's assume we wanted a box that was 30% high and 30% wide; but we also wanted it bright pink. That would be:
[ fancypost='height:30%; width:30%; background:pink;' ] [ /fancypost]
Now let's try that without all my spacesand

so you can see
BUT IT WORKS
And you can also see if you add text in between the [ fancypost =''] code and [ / fancypost] that's where you actually type all the stuff
That's sort of the very basic run down on how code works. For the record I'm still waking up but hopefully that helps! Let me know if I can do anything else c:

Thank all of you so much for the help! Honestly I posted this like last night or something so I'm really glad I got so many replies so quickly. So far, Quill's response helped me understand it the most, but the one thing I don't understand is how to add pictures and gifs to a fancypost?

I used this template as a test, and it works, but when I try to add the image that I want, it seems to ignore it completely -
Because you already have a code set for a background. Replace the background:pink with the background:url(). Might work!

So I haven't been on this site in maybe a year or so and so much has changed! I am most concerned about my fancyposts that I already had. They are not working and I don't know how to fix it. Would anyone be willing to help me? It would be much appreciated

don't forget that it has to be background: url('IMAGE LINK HERE'); with the little apostrophes otherwise the coder won't read it!
