  • SPIRIT

    my head's above the water

Spirit had yet to explore the territory in full. He wanted to see all the various islands there were. So naturally, he went to the cloud forest. It took a long while, but eventually he got there. It was so...murky, so foggy. Still, Spirit trudged through, hoping to find a stream or something of the like.

What he was unaware of, though, was that someone was stalking him.

The kermode bear felt quite hungry, and it was lucky he caught a shallow river at that very moment, with a waterfall. Padding straight into the stream, he glanced downwards just in time to see a fish swim by him. In one fell swoop, he ducked his head under the water and nabbed the fish in his jaws before pulling his head back up. He stared ahead for a little bit, taking it all in. Secretly he thought he should climb up the waterfall and stand at the top to catch more fish, though.

[font=georgia]A white fucking bear. He'd seen nothing like it before. Of course, polar bears existed and they were white bears, but a white bear of the non-polar variety? It confused him--what had caused it to be like this?

So obviously, here he was just watching Spirit, as if staring at the bear would eventually lead him to some sort of epiphany. Alas, that was quite unlikely considering it was doing typical bear things, like fishing. Was it just a normal bear? Acted just like a normal bear? But just white? Seemed like it, though Aleksei was convinced that there was more to the bear rather than this mundane explanation.

He watched from a spot on the banks, wondering if Spirit was going to do something else outside of acting like a typical bear.

He could feel the stare. As he leaned down and caught another fish in his jaws, his green eyes turned on Aleksei. He flung the dead fish to the side, his prey to collect later.
"Are you staring at me? His tone was shocked, and maybe a bit more apprehensive than he intended it to be. So many of these creatures were shocked by the fact he was a bear...why, he wondered?

[font=georgia]The tone seemed accusing to him, as if how dare anyone stare at him? He supposed that it was a little bit uncanny to have someone surprise someone else with their presence, especially if they were unaware of it.

"What does it look like?" he returned coolly, his voice its usual neutral tone. Aleksei made no move to step out from his spot in the brush, content to stay in the shade.

He squinted. He could barely see a thing. "Well, I can't see you. But I can feel the stare. Come on out, I'm not gonna bite." he rasped. At this point one would have had enough with people staring and pointing. Spirit was getting quite close to that point.

[font=georgia]He wasn't inclined to obey, but surely talking with the bear would give him more answers than just staring. There was a small huff from him as he stepped out into the light, the branches he was surrounded with tugging at his fur as he emerged.

"Why are you white?" The question was offered bluntly. Aleksei saw no reason to dither and waste time.

Finally, he could see the odd, unidentifiable creature that was Aleksei. His question didn't make Spirit flinch for a second. "I hear it's a very rare and unique fur color. Not many bears are born with white fur." He looked down at the stream. "I'm one of the lucky ones. Being white helps me catch my prey easily, especially in sunlight. They can't see me against the glare of the sun, but I can see them."

[font=georgia]"But not a polar bear," Aleksei clarified. Perhaps a parent was a polar bear, or something? A distant ancestor? That would make sense, from what he'd seen of genetics, though, to be honest, sometimes it didn't make sense in this world.

He shook his head. "I'm actually called a spirit bear, or a kermode bear. We're really black bears with white fur." He had picked that up from one of the friendly humans. He never knew he had a species, as it was called. It intrigued Spirit, as a young cub.

[font=georgia]"Black bears with white fur." He echoed the words curiously. "And you were born with it." Some blip of nature. It was unnatural, but there was a lot of things that were unnatural in this world, considering everything. Not everything followed the laws that he was used to. "Are there others? Have you seen any others?"

He nodded. "Yes. My birth mother was very abusive to me, as was my brother, both of who had black fur. So I ran away from them. It took me a few hours to find another bear with white fur and a black-furred sibling, but when I did, they took me in." Maybe, he thought, other bears would arrive. Other bears he could meet. He had always wondered if there was a rainbow bear.

[font=georgia]Aleksei had more or less been looking for a yes or a no, not an entire life story. Was it necessary that he was treated to a story of Spirit's past when he had merely asked if there were other white black bears? Aleksei answered his own thought with a no and there was a small huff that signaled his displeasure as he regarded Spirit. "I see," he finally stated. He wasn't sure if he had any more questions that he wanted to be asked at the moment and fell silent.

The bear blinked again, dipped his head into the water and caught another fish. "Now you on the other paw...you look quite unique. What creature are you?" Spirit was genuinely curious. Aleksei looked like a mishmosh of all different creatures.

  • [center]

[font=georgia]He'd never been asked that. Most people thought it was rude to bluntly put forth that question, hence why it was never spoken. The other part of it was his temper--who knew what was going to happen? Fortunately, nothing of the violent sort ensued. "I don't know," he admitted. "I do not have a name for this."

He made a soft "Hmm" sound, gazing over Aleksei once more. "I see.
I know a human who would love you. I forget his name...but he's long gone now."
He shook his head. "They only visited Bear Island once every six months...likely, by now, he's dead."

[font=georgia]A human who would've loved him? The thought of something like that brought something distasteful into his mouth. He heard about humans, though he never encountered them--they were supposed to be cruel capricious creatures with a love for destruction. "I would not have liked that," he answered tersely. Love him for what? Observing him? Claiming him as a trophy? An oddity? Who knew? But Aleksei was already set on his opinion.

He blinked. "It figures." he rumbled. "After those humans tried to pave my home to make it into something called a "mega storage", I never trusted them again. I became the guardian of Bear Island to my former mother's dismay." He remembered her scolding him for self-appointing himself guardian. But it was something, a title he had earned. And he was very proud of it.
