I want to preface this by saying these are my opinions and my genuine concerns and ideas on how to improve the ext. game. I am not judging or criticizing any particular person, clan, character or group what I list below are what I see that I personally do not enjoy or feel diminishes the value of roleplaying and the overall enjoyment of the site. I understand that perhaps this is not the best time to bring these topics up as it seems tensions are high, but I feel that this concerns should be discussed. Plus I keep hearing that the ext. game was left into the hands of the community so I figure this is okay, on top of being told constructive criticism is a-okay.
I ask everyone to remain civil and mature, nothing can be accomplished or fixed if everyone starts screaming and running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
Now, to begin; (Note these aren't in a particular order}
Ally events / Plots;; This one really bothers me, a clan having allies means very little. You have clans who are allies with everyone, or clans who are isolated in a bubble but nothing matters much. Besides the note or gift basket left on the border or a prom or pool party being put up allies don't do anything. That to me is a problem, it makes the clans seem instanced, that you walk into a board and magically you're cut off from the expansive world of the rest of the game, what happens in ShadowClan doesn't matter to anyone in The Rift, even if they're allies.
I see a lot of clans trying to push / force ally relationships and I feel that their heart is in the right place but they're pushing in the wrong direction they need to go. A lot of my concerns have to do with forced plots, and this is one of those. These ally relationships seem forced, no one is really connected, no one really meshes together, right now the ext. game feels like the clans are a bunch of pieces from 20 different puzzles that don't fit together at all.
How to improve it;
1. Actual plots between allies, right now you have clans being obliterated and no one cares. These are allies, friends, family perhaps? No one is concerned of their clan in the more active ones because OOCly they have the attitude of "Well x clan is active and fine, so who cares" but you need to get in the mindset of a character. If you heard that countries around you were getting nuked, would you be scared? I assume you would.
2. 'Empty' threads for activity do not build clan relationships. Gift baskets, notes on the border, proms, parties, things that people post a few times in to show their clan was there but don't actively engage in are what I consider 'empty' such as when some one spams a lot of open threads that don't mean much just to show activity or boost a clan's 'ratings'. Have allies rally for a cause, take your allies and make a plot, do something dramatic, or big or risky, its a roleplaying site and with the lack of limitaitons you can literally do anything. There has to be more plots we can do besides parties. Have them team up to defeat an enemy, even if its an NPC, team up against endgame or something.
Weekly tasks;; Okay so weekly tasks can be done right, but from i've seen they seem to be an excuse to spam post or spam open threads. Its not a bad bad idea, but it can become bad when people start posting those 'empty' threads I mentioned before. A lot of these tasks are lifeless or repetitive, when I've got them for my characters I tried to make it fun/engaging but everyone is used to making flowercrowns or playing tag multiple times that no one cares anymore.
How to fix it;
1. Do not make them count for promotions, this is a sure fire way to get people to spam empty threads.
2. Replace them with plots, with missions, things that force people to be creative and engage and do more then post a few times and call it a day.
Lack of official guides / rules / nothing being updated etc (This includes trad as well) I understand that staff is busy and when I say 'official' i do not mean something staff wrote but something consistently updated that is 'staff approved. Littered throughout the site you will se numerous threads that are full of misinformation, when I ask questions in here half the time I get 4 different answers, while the main game may not have 'rules' or limits on powers, etc. A updated guide would be useful. This also involves the trad. game, while there are guides about it, I keep seeing misinformation and the 'official trad. rules' aren't currently updated. People cannot know information if its not easily available and up to date.
For example; I was told people can make up their own powers, then i was told they couldn't and there were limited powers, and was listed a guide for 'free powers' but if powers don't need bought how come these few powers are listed as free? Then I was listed another guide with more powers listed in the free guide. I hope you can see how that is very confusing.
Perhaps its not for those of you who have been here a while, but someone returning after a long time or a brand spankin' new member isn't going to understand what the hell is going on in the ext. game, and tbh, in the trad. game either. While asking questions in the help den is a possibility it's much easier to just exit out of Feralfront and find somewhere else to RP. Forum RPing isn't as common anymore and if Feralfront confuses them someone could easily go to discord, tumblr, or even twitter and find someone to RP with there with less confusion. To me this mis information is very bad, to be honest I couldn't find the site's rules when I joined, and just went by common sense.
I'm not saying to overwhelm people with 50 guides and rules, just at least make it up to date and in a single place where people can get it if they want and KNOW its valid and truthful information without second guessing themselves.
How to fix;;
1. Trash/unsticky all old announcements and guides that are out of date.
2. Make a new trad and main game guide, perhaps member made with staff approval and keep it updated.
3. Put those somewhere that people can easily see them.
Other minor personal concerns;; I couldn't figure out how to word this or if it deserved its own title but..
1. There are a lot of OP characters, and I know, I know "you can report OP characters" but the thing is, they're not OP if you just want to RP a normal character. In ext. game standards they're your average cat, some god slaying cyborg with heat vision ready to take on magneto himself. Put I personally feel like no one cares about anyone who wants to play something in between traditional or ext. You have either, super strict traditional which can be totally fun, but not where most of my characters fall or you have everyone is an x-men basically, which also can be fun.
But I don't find it fair that anytime I want to do something or plot in a clan I have to make my character OP to just survive around 80% of the characters population, when in any other scenario they would be considered over powered, but the tolerance to OPness has just gone down to the point they're average, if that makes any sense.
Ontop of that these types of characters cut off any plots. It makes storytelling meaningless and well, not fun. I want to have fun, I want to build a story, I came here to have a good time and roleplay some cats, but..thats hard to do and it shouldn't be.
When I have a plot, I don't expect it to go my way, I don't expect a character to die or get hurt, but I also don't expect a character to use a powe r from a mile away to somehow taste molecules in the air and then throw fireballs at my character. There's no build up, theres no suspense, no reaction besides "look how powerful I am" and personally, to me, thats not fun.
Now, cool characters that have powers and neat things CAN be done perfectly alright, for example, and a shout out here - the rift. The Rift is amazing, there are 10ft tall hellhounds there, but it doesn't feel like they're OP because they don't force their power over you, the roleplayers make the characters fun, their designs and their bodies are just for fun they aren't there to eliminate and destroy the world and I love these characters and enjoy to RP with these unique characters because they have flaws and weaknesses and the people behind the accounts are up for fun plots and are willing to take risks.
Again, these are just my suggestions for how we can as a community help improve the site, I believe at heart we all have the same goal in mind and want to see this play flourish into a creative community full of cool creative people. ![]()
