    VAULT 83

    territory ✦ traditions ✦ ranks and titles ✦ foreign affairs ✦ threads

    Vault 83 is a neutral group who reside in a vault - a large underground, man-made structure - after a dreadful disaster destroyed their home above.

    TERRITORY

    Within the vault are a series of gloomy metallic tunnels customised with various pieces of clan propaganda. These tunnels lead to different rooms that serve different purposes - a canteen, a training room, various barracks, water cleaning, power generating and of course a medical ward. Above ground, the earth is scorched and bare - food is hard to find, but not impossible. A lot of relics lie unearthed in the ground outside.

    TRADITIONS

    Most of the dwellers are wary of newcomers, but are learning to accept others. They are taught how to survive from a young age, and often know how to forage and fend for themselves if stuck in the wilderness above. Whilst the leader, Pipboy, tries to be welcoming towards 'ghouls' (irridiated/mutated individuals), other members may hold grudges against them. This - along with other crimes against the dwellers - is highly frowned upon in Vault 83, but not illegal.

  • It was a normal day, really. Life within the Vault tended to trundle on without much drama - well, at least it seemed like this to Pipboy. Although she was the leader - a good one, at that - she failed to have interest in the petty arguments between the dwellers. It wasn't because she was 'superior' to them... it was just that it was none of her business and that she couldn't really be bothered. Currently, the female was padding through the maze of tunnels that connected the individual rooms, wondering if she'd see a friend.

    Busy. Benjamin was busy. Chewing a match, he set about rearranging his bandage box, wondering if anyone would come in. In some ways, Ben would have loved the company; on the other hand, people only tended to come to the medic ward when they were injured. Injury wasn't good - they weren't running low on supplies, it was more that Ben was one of the only medics and he was terrified of blood.

    Jael's pawsteps could be heard from afar as he continued going through the motions of his routine a fifth time. He'd been practicing a patrol of sorts, looping around the vault's many corridors, inspecting anything suspicious. From the tiniest crack in the wall, to a slightly dislodged piece of tubing. So far, he'd seen nothing but the odd radroach. Jael was certain that he could pull off guarding. He was a large dog, had the imposing voice and everything, and his father before him had been a sentry. As a dweller, he was responsible for helping his fellow citizens. It was a pressure that never lifted.

    Unfortunately, being so intense on his inspections of the environment, he wouldn't notice someone else nearing by.

    Click click click went the bug, darting from one edge to another. Mayo followed its hopping movement with great interest. The little grasshopper had somehow snuck into her room... with her help of course, keeping it away from mother's prying eyes. She was an expert smuggler of insect friends. Her paws cupped around the corners of her table, trapping the insect from getting away. She quickly pulled a cup over it. As soon as she was done getting breakfast, she'd come back to watch it again.

    The door of her parent's vault room slid open, the white serval padding out to find something to eat.

    CICHLID;;

    Cichlid hadn't move an inch from her nest. Today was gonna be one of those days - she sensed it. Her eye was in a state of very noticeable discomfort, and it honestly felt as worse as a headache. The torbie can't remember very distinctly what happened - it was a tree branch, right? Or was it at the claws of a not so friendly rogue? She couldn't remember. She rested gently, her paws snug under her chin. She closed her only working eye. Maybe it was better to lay in her nest, she was already half disorientated with her blind eye anyways.

  • Pip spotted Jael down the winding corridor and grinned, approaching him by speeding up her gait. Jael, however, seemed to be in his own little world, causing the smile to falter on her face slightly. "Jael?" she asked in a sing song voice, waving a paw in front of the male's face.

    Ahhhh, Ben remembered a job he had to do. He was going to drop off an eyepatch he found whilst scavenging and give it to Cichlid. He didn't know if the torbie would appreciate the gesture, or think it was a little rude. Oh well, he only meant it nicely.

    The lanky black elkhound hurried along the corridor until he reached the barracks, knocking on Cichlid's door.

    Something dark passed in front of his eyes. A small noise that sounded a lot like "boof" escaped Jael. He hadn't noticed someone there! How could he? Sheepishly, he raised his head from where he'd been staring at one of many, many errant pieces of wire and found himself looking at none other than the Overseer.

    "Oh. Overseer, my deepest apologies. I was just, well..." Explaining what he had been doing suddenly seemed a little embarrassing. "I was keeping my eye out in case one of these 'ere tunnels was damaged." Not a great excuse but the best he could come up with. Hopefully she hadn't seen him circling around the area five times already.

    "Is something the matter?" In reality, he was more asking, "Can I help?"

    Mayo crept into the canteen, her steps light so as to not make much sound. There were few here this time. She wondered what the grasshopper would like. Did it eat fish? Hopefully not other bugs, because she'd rather not give up any of her own. Eventually she decided on something eggy, and with her paper-bagged food in tow, she darted off to her room again.

    What awaited her was an upturned cup. Oh dear.

    CICHLID;;

    The she-cat jumped a bit in her nest, hearing the knocking at the door. She balanced herself off her nest, missing the warmth it provided as she flicked her tail. She padded gingerly towards the door; She was small for her size - she really didn't hope it was something alarming. She spoke in a squeak, "Who's there?"

  • A small grin spread across the muzzle of the overseer as Jael quickly tried to cover up his moment of blankness. Despite the larger dog being a little bit dopey sometimes, Pip knew she could rely on him. "No, everything's fine. Can I help you with the patrol?" she inquired, although she'd already began walking down the tunnel, expecting Jael to follow.

    Ben smiled gently as he heard padding from the inside, signifying that Cichlid was coming to the door. However, it didn't open - instead, a quiet voice squeaked through the metal door, barely audible. Ben had always had good hearing, however, and cleared his throat before speaking. "Just plain old Ben!"

    Jael's sheepish grin morphed into a genuine smile as he followed suit. "Of course." His paws click-clacked on the concrete ground as he followed the Overseer deeper into the Vault's tunnel system, tail wagging behind him.

    "There's been a few suspicious cracks in these 'ere walls, but no signs of collapse as far as I can tell." He reported, "Saw a mouse, but it was just Ms. Ivy."

    The young serval was now running along the tunnels. Where had her new friend gone? She felt fear for it. The other dwellers might crush it, or eat it, or get mad at her for keeping it. Her eyes kept pried for any small dot of green, but so far, the halls remained purely silver.

    CICHLID;;

    Cichlid was a bit more relieved now, but still hesitant to open the door. It could be someone faking Ben's voice - no. Ridiculous thought. Lead it up to her, Cichlid herself, to be so ignorant. It would take a skilled person to even fake a voice - and even then, how would they have gotten in? The tortie was able to jump up, and successfully open the door. She padded out from behind it, glancing up with her two eyes; "Hello Ben. Sorry about that." She spoke softly, "Is there a problem?"

  • Pipboy nodded, timely spotting a crack in the wall. "We do need to sort these out though," she sighed, before turning around with a somewhat goofy smile. "Maybe not yet, there are more important things. How have you been anyway?" she added.

    eritasum

    "S'alright," he grinned as the door opened, although didn't step inside. He didn't want to intrude. "I found an eyepatch, and you can have it... if you want."

    Jael bobbed his head in agreement. It was true. The tunnel walls were looking worse for wear, with spiderweb cracks tucked in the corners that reached both up and down. Such solid walls had worn away throughout generations of vault life. He wondered if they were prepared to handle a collapse. Jael was determined that he would be ready, like all things.

    He turned to Pipboy, not losing his stride, "I've been well, persisting." He chuckled, "Keeping an eye out. See, I heard a rumor some teens were stirring up trouble, trying to start a gang. Then there's what might be outside, or a radiation leak, or you know... anything." Some might call the dog paranoid, but Jael just believed in keeping secure. "It's enough to keep one up at night. What about you, if you don't mind me asking, Overseer?"

  • Pipboy grinned, but it faltered as Jael bought up the teens and the outside. The teens had been a long problem, and they had been trying to solve it for quite a while, but... gangs were inevitable in somewhere like this. All Pipboy could try and do was discourage them and try to promote peace. She didn't want them to turn violent, after all. "I've been good, I think it's been a fairly relaxed month here," she said, frowning sympathetically. "Although we really should think about sending out a patrol. Maybe we can have us and Mayo, and some others. Mayo needs the experience," she said, deep in thought.

    The squirrelly one? Jael had no idea how the kid would fare out in the wild on a patrol, but if the Overseer was keen on it, he wouldn't speak out against it. "I agree a patrol should happen sooner than later. The safety of the vault is of utmost priority." He didn't even want to imagine life outside of the vault. The hazards, the lack of structure, the chaotic monsters threatening to encroach at any opportunity...

    "Speak of the devil." He gestured further down the tunnel.

    Mayo's ears swiveled, catching the voices of two canids heading towards her. She looked over, her eyes wide. Her friend was still missing, and now she could be in trouble for it. What could she do?

    What if they asked her about it? She had to stay calm, stay collected! Nobody knew, right? Even the Overseer didn't know. The serval decided to simply smile, though the smile seemed incredibly forced. She sat down, imitating to the best of her ability the friendly faces of her fellow dwellers.

  • Pipboy was glad that Jael agreed with her, but couldn't fight the feeling that he had to agree with her anyway. She was the leader, after all. At Jael's second remark, the bear dog looked up and spotted the serval, her muzzle stretched into a reassuring smile as she approached. "Mayo, we were just wondering if you would like to come on a patrol with us," Pip asked, looking towards Jael at the mention of 'we'.

    To say that Mayo was surprised was an understatement. Patrol? Did that mean go outside? She wasn't sure. But it didn't sound like trouble! Mayo nodded, leaping up to her paws to join the two dogs at their side. She clicked her tongue twice, confirming she was ready to go. For a second she almost thought she saw a spot of green in the back of the tunnel... but it disappeared in the blink of an eye.

    Her friend was probably safe for now. After all, it wasn't everyday that she'd been invited to do something.

    Jael observed the young serval, a little put off by the noises she made. He wondered if all servals did that. "I guess we're ready to go? Is there anyone else you'd like to bring along, Overseer?" Maybe someone who's better with kids, he added mentally.

  • Pip smiled - she knew that most of the people in the vault were traumatised, and had dealt with it in their own ways - Mayo's was quite possibly not speaking. Maybe she'd been like that before, though... Pip would have sighed in thought had she not been around others. Turning to Jael, she shrugged. "If you can think of anyone, then sure. And it's Pip," she added, her smile turning into a smirk.
