"Goes by so much faster with help." Naomi noted aloud, grabbing her third cow, making it six down and four to go. Naomi was relieved for the help. Usually it took much longer, especially since she was usually alone while doing it. She would never admit it, but it got lonely, being on the farm by herself. She was happy just for the company. But at least now, with work getting done faster than before, she would at least have a little downtime to herself before she had to go to sleep.

"No problem." David said with a nod. "Milking cows was my life. If you ever need me to milk all of them, I would gladly oblige." As he milked, he took another look at Goliath who had fallen asleep. The heat would always make him sleepier. "Now what do we do with the sheep at the end of the night? I assume you just heard them into a barn?" He wasn't sure when those sheep would need sheared, but he assumed it wouldn't be too much longer with the heat.
-
"Yeah for now." Naomi answered, "We'll be getting around to shearing them by the end of the week. So, that's coming up..." shearing the sheep was never her most favorite thing. Though, she knew it had to be done so she never complained. Plus the extra money it brought it was nice, as well.
-
David nodded, remembering the times when he was little and his father made him shear all of the sheep for a punishment. It was never a fun job. You had to keep the sheep still and you had to be sure that their skin wasn't cut with the shears. It seemed like she had a pretty decent herd of sheep, and he wondered how she'd done it alone all this time. It must have taken ages.
-
Once finished with the last cow, Naomi picked up two pails of the milk and headed to the storage closet with them, "Bring those over here." she called to David.
-
David picked up each pail two by two, setting them where Naomi told him to. All the cows had been milked and they were happily grazing in the field they had been released to. He wondered briefly if she would let him see the calves, because he was sure they would need tending to. He didn't know if she had any at that time, but if so he figured it would be cool to see. He loved baby cows.
-
Naomi went to one of the shelves inside the closet and pulled down a funnel and a couple of jugs. She handed a funnel and jug to David, "I made this part a little easier. See at the bottom of the pail, there's a thing sticking out? Aim it towards the funnel and wiggly the part jutting out until it comes out. It's a cork of sorts. Once it's out, a nice steady stream goes directly to the funnel, little to no mess and we get just about all the milk." she explained.
-
David listened to her instructions and nodded, doing exactly as she had said with all of his pails. As the milk went through the funnel, Goliath had awoken from his nap and was staring at the milk thirstily. Once all the milk was in the jug, he headed over to a hose nearby and allowed it to run so that Goliath could have a drink.
-
At the sound of water, all the dogs stood and made their way over. Looking up, Naomi chuckled, "There's a bucket to the side you can fill with water for them if you'd like."
-
David nodded. "Oh! Thanks, that's very helpful" He stuck the hose nozzle into the bucket, turning the hose on for it to fill. Before it even got to the top, all of the dogs were already helping themselves. Goliath stepped back, his thirst quenched after drinking separately. Once all of the dogs had stepped away, David turned off of the hose and headed back to Naomi's position. "So, what's next?" He inquired.
-
Jugs filled, Naomi went to the corner of the closet and pulled off a blanket to reveal a wooden wagon, "I use this to carry the jugs back to the house. Makes it much easier and faster." Maneuvering the wagon through the door, she settled it back on its wheels before putting the jugs in it, "You can go now if you'd like. I can handle it from here myself." she offered.
-
"Well, is there anything else that needs done here?" David wouldn't want to leave until he was sure that she didn't need any more of his help. He didn't want to appear like he wasn't dedicated, and he most certainly didn't want to appear selfish.
-
Naomi shook her head in response, "Just getting these in the fridge and putting everyone up later. I can do that myself no problem. The dogs make it easier."
-
At the dismissal, David nodded. She seemed like she had it covered, so he would oblige and leave. "Alright. So I will be back first thing tomorrow morning." He nodded his head to her. "Thank you for teaching me some new things and thank you for giving me this job. It means a lot." If it weren't for the job offer, he'd still be wasting time watching old shows about cowboys catching criminals.
-
She smiled and nodded, "Not a problem, thanks for the help. I do greatly appreciate it. How would you prefer to get paid? Daily, weekly, biweekly? I can work with whatever you prefer." she loaded the rest of the jugs into the wagon except one, which she took and offered to David.
-
David nodded. "No problem at all, farming is my life." Then he realized that he had forgotten a very important question. "Do you grow crops?" He asked, His farm was big on growing things like corn, soybeans, alfalfa, etc. They would sell it for a profit. "Weekly sounds great also." He added.
-
She nodded at his preference of weekly pay before answering his question, "No, I personally don't grow crops, however I have a couple of cousins who do. I trade them milk, eggs, and fertilizer weekly for things out of their gardens. What I don't use myself, I sell or trade. I also trade them apples as well since there's a small grove that naturally grows in the back of the horse pasture." she explained.
-
David nodded, satisfied by her answer. "That's very cool. If you did have crops, I know how tractors work. That would've been a very easy task for me. My old job had a lot of acres." He paused, realizing that he was just going to talk her ear off if he stayed any longer. "Alright well, enough of that. I will see you tomorrow." With a little wave, he turned and began his journey to the front gate.
-
"Have a good night." Naomi called, "See ya in the morning." Turning back to the wagon, she began pulling it towards the main house.
Vixie ran after David and Goliath, seeing them out while the rest of the dogs followed Naomi. -
On David's way to the gate, he noticed that the two guard dogs were close behind him. He didn't mind, they made him feel a lot safer. Vixie fell in line beside Goliath and Hercules fell in line on the other side of him. Once they made it to the gate, the two stopped as David kept going. They were probably trained not to go past that point. Getting in his truck, he drove himself and Goliath home. (Timeskip?)
