  • Embertail woke up in ShadowClans camp. No, wait. That wasn't quite right. It was ShadowClan, but it was leaf-green. The tufts of swamp grass stood tall, proud, and plentiful. Frogs could be heard croaking in the distance. The peat beneath her paws was pleasantly cool, not freezing. The medicine cat frowned and got to her paws, ears flicking as they listened to the sweet sounds of leaf-green. Her peace did not last long, however. Despite the air being perfectly warm and clear, the calico came to the realization that she could hardly breathe. Her blue eye became wide in shock, taking in desperate, wheezing breaths, attempting to stay awake. As if things could not get any worse, Embertail caught the smell of something acrid. Smoke. A fire. Her fur bristled, the she-cat attempting to stand and run away, as far as possible, but she could hardly move, much less breathe. She was helpless to watch as the smoke crept closer and closer to her, overwhelming her. Embertail took a breath, and to her shock, she could breathe. She could breathe this smoke like she would air. It cleared her lungs and mind and set her body at ease, and her blue eye slid closed once again, peaceful.

Her tail was bristling when the medicine cat shot up, awake. A sign! StarClan had sent her a sign! She dashed from the medicine den, nearly running into the thorns. "Snakestar! I need to see Smokepaw!"

Snakestar was atop the high rock, nearly dozing off when a loud voice reached his ears. He whipped his head to see Embertail and he flicked his ears back in confusion. "Well, don't look at me! I don't know where he could be." The British tom shrugged. Why would she need his permission to see him? Did he do something wrong? So, the leader paused before adding, "And why do you need to see him, exactly?" If he somehow caused trouble then he'd want to know about it.

  • "StarClan sent me a dream." She mewed hurriedly. Her ears did turn hot as she realized she had just roused the tom from his nap, but that was her first dream! "I believe they want me to take him on as my apprentice. I was wondering... May I make an announcement?" Embertail smiled, her heart still pounding lightly, and gestured down the high rock to the camp below.

Snakestar arched a brow. He couldn't believe his ears. "Him? Your new apprentice?" He questioned in disbelief. Smokepaw had been a kittypet! What could StarClan see in him? "Er... if that's what you truly believe." He said hesitantly, giving Embertail clearance to make the announcement.

  • She stepped to the edge of the high rock. Kittypet or no, StarClan had made their choice quite obvious. "ShadowClan!" Embertail called. "Our ancestors sent me a dream. Smokepaw." Her eye searched for the young tom. "I believe you are not meant to walk the path of a warrior, but a medicine cat."

  • [center][fancypost=background: transparent; width: 50%][align=justify][size=8]Irispaw heard the announcement from her place right beside the apprentices' den, her imaginary brows lifting as Embertail declared that Smokepaw was not to be a warrior, frowning slightly as she mentioned "ancestors." Must be StarClan she was referring to. The ebony she-cat was still skeptical, but she wouldn't let her thoughts be known.

But it was good news, wasn't it? [b]"Congratulations, Smokepaw."

Eyelids parted a fraction, the vibrant blue eyes peeking through as they searched the dimly lit cavern, vision blurred. He blinked once, his sight began to focus as the drowsiness attempted to leave his system. Smokepaw groaned softly, his coiled body disentangling and shifting on to his belly, blinking rapidly to clear his vision. Releasing a quiet huff, he rose on to his paws, ready to start the day - or rather, dreading it. The Maine Coon trotted out from the apprentices' den, not even his head was poking out did Embertail's voice travel to his ears. "Our ancestors sent me a dream. Smokepaw," Frozen, his widen eyes stared, bewildered, at the medicine cat. Why had she called him? Was he in trouble? Did their ancestors despise him for not being clanborn? His thoughts dissipated as the calico's soft-spoken call continued, her single blue ocular finding him.

"I believe you are not meant to walk the path of a warrior, but a medicine cat."

What? That was ludicrous! How could he, a former kittypet, be worthy of following the steps of a medicine cat? He didn't know the first thing on how to heal anyone! Smokepaw swallowed thickly, glancing between the cats that gathered to listen to Embertail's announcement. "I... I accept..." uttered Smokepaw, looking dazed from the new responsibility settling on his shoulders. But, at least his new mentor wouldn't be as harsh as Losteye. His gaze flickered to Irispaw briefly, flashing her a quick smile. "Thank you.."

  • [center][fancypost=background-color:;border:0px;width:450px;font-size:8pt;text-align:justify;]Lost had been walking into camp, two squirrels and a frog held within his jaws, when he heard Embertail's call. Her announcement was unsuspected. Out of all the cats here, she chose Smokepaw. She chose his apprentice. Well, that wasnt the worst news. Probably, even, the best so far today.

He sat down his catches in the fresh kill pile and sighed. It seemed his training had went to waste, not that Lost cared much. It was a bother to have an apprentice, anyways. None of them seemed to make it to their warrior ceremony, anyways. "Congratulations, Smokepaw. It was a pleasure having you as an apprentice," he mewed as he passed Smokepaw on his way to the warriors den. Though, they were fake words of kindness.

  • She offered the tom a small smile of encouragement. She was relieved in a way. It would take some time to learn everything to be sure, but Smokepaw would be a great help.

"You will make a great medicine cat, I'm sure of it." Embertail said, as she made her way down the high rock. "I won't lie, it can be very overwhelming at first. But don't rush things. In time, you'll know every herb by scent alone."

Cicatrixface was half asleep in the warrior's den as Embertail's call rang out across the clan, his eyes traveled to Smokepaw as she announced him her new apprentice. Jumping to his paws he raced across camp to meet the tom. "Congratulations, now all you have to do is keep us bone-headed warriors in line" the tom joked lightly, he was glad to see dedicated cats in Shadowclan. "If your former den-mates call you a coward, send their ears to my claws" he added. He knew apprentices didn't know to hold their tongue and most youth think Medicine cat is a softer life-choice.

  • [center][fancypost=;border:0px;width:450px;text-align:justify;font-size:8pt]The sound of Embertail's hurried voice drifting on the wind hadn't roused Oakpaw from his peaceful nap, but rather the sudden disappearance of the long, warm fur that the tabby's russet nose had been pressed into had; as Smokepaw stood, answering to the call of his name, the tabby's head lifted, green eyes blinking blearily as he watched his best friend leave the den quickly, his feathery tail disappearing through the entrance. "Mm, what's Smokey doin'? 'S goin' on?" he asked drowsily to himself in a soft murmur, pushing himself to his haunches, his tongue grooming over one paw before he dragged it over his eyes, rubbing away the blurriness of his recent sleep.

His ears angled forward, listening for any sort of response from Smokepaw outside, but rather than hearing the other apprentice, a few muffled 'congratulations' from the cats outside met his audits instead. His brows knitted; what could that be? What was going on? Interested, the thin tom slunk toward the entrance of the den, stepping over the few other apprentices who were still fast asleep, not yet ready for the day to begin. His head pushed outside, ears angled forward curiously, and his eyes traveled to Embertail, then Snakestar, then down to Smokepaw. Confusion was clearly written on his face. What were they-

"You will make a great medicine cat, I'm sure of it."

The words of Embertail sent a chill down his spine, his fur lifting just slightly as he stared, almost slackjawed, at Smokepaw. He was the medicine cat apprentice now? After just a moment, a wide grin, bright as the daylight around him, suddenly split his maw, and he bounded over to his friend, nearly shoving his face into his chest fur and grooming at his chin furiously without any sort of warning. He was his best friend. He had to deal with it. "You're really the medicine cat's apprentice? Wow, Smokepaw! That's such an honor!" he said with a wide smile, his eyes bright and wide, void of their previous drowsiness. One could nearly feel the excitement radiating off of him for Smokepaw. "I'm sure you'll be a great medicine cat!"

  • Lizardbreath curled her lip. A kittypet trusted with one of the highest honors StarClan could bestow upon anyone. Imagine that. Out of all the good, pure blooded apprentices, the true descendants of the great first leader Shadowstar... StarClan had gazed down upon their children and decided not one of them was as worthy as that kittypet. And she did believe that once a kittypet, always a kittypet. But no! StarClan could never be wrong. She was a good StarClan-fearing cat. And yet she could not reconcile this. Embertail must have made a mistake.

Ratkit, meanwhile, bounded over to Smokepaw excitedly. "Wow!" the little tabby exclaimed, waving his tail. "That's so cool! You're gonna get to talk with StarClan!" He turned to Embertail, "What's it like to get a dream from StarClan? Does it feel like a real dream? 'Cause I can never remember my dreams, you must have a realllly good memory! Ho-"

"Ratkit!" Lizardbreath snapped, interrupting him. "Come to bed."

Ratkit's ears drooped as the leggy sloe-furred queen stalked over to him, her murky eyes glaring daggers. "Don't you fold your ears back at me," she growled, and snatched him away from the crowd by his scruff, carrying him back to the nursery.
