  • here is the thread ~ sorry it's not fancy, i'm stretched a bit thin atm ^_^"

would you like to start or should i?

  • I screamed when I saw your character. HE IS LITERAL PERFECTION. Creating my character now.

If my character in my book looked like anyone, it would look like that guy. He's hot.

  • Quick thing— the spoilers hate me, so forgive me with that.

Also, do they know eachother previously? Perhaps they've seen eachother in town but never spoken to eachother. And since they hate eachother at first... no?

Alsoooo, are they gonna start in the forest running from the bandits? You can create the first post, but I was just wondering.

Also, we need to name the Realms. Can we call the current one (like, their home one, Herra? It's easy to remember). I'll refer to it as that for now unless you come up with another one.

Here's the information we know, to make it accessible:

    The Penta
A bandit group that resides in the Realm of Herra. They are both highly respected and feared, and are often undercover. Their known base is in the sewer grates under the city, though their base is an elaborate one. They are known to be spies and expertise liars as well.

    The Resistence
A group of people who are rebelling against the Monarchy in an attempt to create a Civil War. They are one of the largest organizations and while they do not target the Penta, they do consider them a common enemy.

  • i'll have to do the first post tomorrow, cause it's 1 am here and i am so tired ^_^"

also, i like the name herra for the realm. <3
what if we did something like the delta for the other realm they're going to?
also also, weren't the penta going to be the ones with the interdenominational travel boat?

also also also, i love your faceclaim! the shannara chronicles had such a good first season ~

  • Take your time! I wake up at like 6:30 and leave at 7:00 every morning to get to school, plus I go to bed at like 11, so I'm a little baby. It's totally fine— take your time and you can post whenever you want. I'm not rushed.

I like the name Delta! It's similar to Herra, and therefore easy to remember.

And I believe that they were, yes.

And thank you! I watched like half of the first episode and I didn't know about it. I know it would get better if I actually took the time to sit down and properly watch it and understand it though, so I plan to do that! The actress is super pretty though.

  • ooc;
i woke up at 9:45 today and i don't have class until 1:00
tomorrow i'll have my first class at 8:30 am, so i'll go to bed earlier tonight

yeah, i think the show was based off a book, but i never read the book
my piece of warning if you're gonna watch the show is - don't get attached to anyone
    ^_^ enjoy

also, sorry if this post is lame or rambley ^_^"
i'm just feeling lame today, but here we go anyway ~
also also, sorry i took so long to get this up, again, i'm feeling lame today

    ic;
It was a beautiful summer day, the day Adler decided to venture into the woods for some freedom from the stress of the world around him. The weather had been characteristically warm the past few days, making many of the animals that were about rather sluggish and lazy. Many of the people were the same way. Though Adler was no immune to the effect of the humidity, he wasn't one to just sit around and waste the day away. No, despite being hot and tired, he was going to go on an adventure.

As the young boy wandered through the woods, he was careful to keep his footsteps quiet. He knew there were people about who would be more than happy to capture a young man as capable and physically healthy as himself. Even with his long skinny body, Adler would likely be sold and used as some sort of servant somewhere far away from the small town he'd called home. After run-ins with the men before, he had decided it was best to avoid them if possible. They didn't play fair, after all.

Subconsciously fingering a thin, pale scar on his wrist, he paused to admire a stag in the distance. They were such beautiful creatures, large, peaceful, and dangerous if they wanted to. They were incredible and he never got tired of watching the wildlife. Something in the distance, however, spooked the deer and it took off into the trees. Sighing, Adler decided to get moving again.

It wasn't long before the heat of the day dragged him to a slower walk and he decided it would be best to just sit down and relax for a bit. The light haired teen collapsed into a pile of leaves, out of sight from anyone who may be passing by. He'd been on the bad side of the law here recently and any opportunity they saw to beat the snot out of him, they took. So what was the solution to that problem? Don't give them any opportunities. Though the authorities didn't normally venture into the woods, it was nice to be relaxing in the shade anyway. And with no one else around, the time was perfect for a midday nap.

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer."

Disa made her way through the people of the square, feeling the want to concave upon herself. She held her breath as if she were underwater— a drowning fish. She broke through the crowd and slipped out of sight within less than a moment, and found herself within the neighboring trees. "Goddamn idiots... rallies... babies..." she mumbled as she trekked her way through the forest, each voice losing itself until she could only hear the occasional bird. Even the birds have taken shelter. Convenient geniuses.

With each breath, she cursed the sun. The way her leather tunic stuck to her shoulders, or the way the heat made even the lines of her various tattoos stand on end. While she kept an eye open for places to rest, but she continued past every one. If she wanted rest, she'd have stayed in the village; no one would have noticed a thief in the midst of a rally, and there were some pretty pennies in some very pretty purses back in the square.

She also wasn't in the mood to enjoy the heat, or anything really. Her day had been sour so far and a flaming ball that made her skin feel the need to curl like crisped paper, or idiots who believed their prince cared about their opinion, didn't seem very appealing. Not knowing where she was headed, or why she was even continuing to trudge through the harsh branches, bramble, and leaves, was beyond her. But she refused to take the road out of shallow pride— not that she'd admit it.

The girl pulled a piece of useless, fraying fabric from her belt and began to pluck its strings with calm, yet frustrated fingers, as she rounded a tree, still muttering about the rally. She had just muttered audibly, "Way to go, Prince," when she almost toppled over something— or rather, someone. "Argh!" she blurted, stepping back to see a boy with light-brown hair beneath a tree. By the looks of it, he had been asleep, but she didn't bother to apologize for trampling on the leaves, let alone him. "And why aren't you at the rally? Why don't you go and contemplate and protest your fishing nets like the other idiots?"

"Pain. I let the bullets fly, oh, I let them rain."

    OOC;;

Also, it's totally fine! I just wanted to make sure you still remembered the thread. And that's hardly what I call rambly; I get pretty bad sometimes, so genuinely, don't worry 'bout it! And good note; will do.

The post was edited 2 times, last by Elfie ().

  • He hadn't been asleep long, just reaching the beginnings of a strange dream, when the young man was waked rather violently from his slumber. With a foot jabbing him in the rib cage and the unfamiliar voice of a young female, Adler scrambled back. A small bit of pain had come with the unintentional attack to his side, but he did little more than hold a hand over the spot for a moment, staring at the girl with wide, suddenly awake eyes. All of a sudden, she was speaking harshly to him, something the young man had never taken kindly to. Though he wasn't sure what he was supposed to be defensive of, he looked at her incredulously.

"Excuse me? First of all, I don't fish, therefore having no complaints." Looking her up and down, he could tell she was miffed about something, but the question was what? "And anyway, shouldn't I be asking you why you're stomping around the woods like a troll, trampling innocent civilians like me with no remorse?" Adler had always held a certain sarcasm in his tone, an attribute than generally got him slapped upside the head by his mother. Threat of punishment never stopped him from answering aggression with lightheartedness, though, often getting him in more trouble than he was due.

Crossing his arms, he raised an eyebrow at her. "I didn't realize it was a crime to enjoy a nap in the heat of the day. My sincerest apologies, m'lady." With a mock bow he figured he'd gone too far. Coming back up, his sandy brown hair bounced around his face, tickling the skin near his eyes. He was probably due a haircut, but he wasn't real keen to let his mother near his head with a pair of scissors. He'd seen how badly she'd butchered the hair of his siblings and despite the length, Adler actually liked his hair the way it was.

Standing a good distance away from the irritated female, the young lad tried to get a good gauge of the situation. She was pretty, but he was pretty sure he'd never seen her before. As the troublemaker he was, it was generally Adler who was the one being recognized by strangers rather than the other way around. He had plenty of people who put up with him, but not too many genuine friends... at least not friends he was certain wouldn't stab him square in the back at the earliest convenience.

Despite the heat, the forest had really come to life within the last half hour. Birds were chirping from the treetops and squirrels and other woodland creatures could be seen scurrying about, breaking their camouflage long enough to run across a patch of light before disappearing into the greens and browns of their surroundings again. To be honest, he was surprised he hadn't been woken by a fairy or something trying to pick his pockets. I mean, it wasn't like they would've found anything, but the little kleptos were always hunting for something shiny to decorate their homes with. Though he couldn't blame them, it was always a bit inconvenient to wake up and find the coins you spent hours working for, gone without a trace. Luckily the little imps never ventured into the houses of people and in his experience, Adler had gotten smart and started leaving his possessions at home.

Running a hand through his hair, the tall, slender young man sighed. "Well, if you don't mind, I'd like to return to my nap." He had been rather comfortable before she'd disturbed him and he was curious as to where his dream would have headed had he not been disturbed. Silently, waving out his arm in a gesture for her to be on her way, he eyed her carefully with his clear blue eyes. Well, no one had ever accused him of being polite.

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer."

The corner of the girl's lip twitched at his audacity to reply with some sort of pride, rather than ramble on about finding one of the guards. Like they'd care. To one of his first comments, she said flatly, "You call yourself an— what was it? Oh— innocent civilian, right. But as far as I'm concerned, everyone who isn't a criminal is at the rally, because only an amateur criminal would go within sights of so much security. So, either you really are a lazy dumb*ss, and therefore not worth any sort of remorse, or you're wanted. I'll take a gander and guess the second, but it's not my place," and in a quieter, mock whisper she added, "Besides— any troll has a hell of a lot more brains to be stomping the woods, rather than the rally."

"And m'lady me all you'd like, when you are the one getting the beauty sleep," she added in a flatter tone than earlier. The sun filtered through the trees as if it were a net, making Disa's hair an odd reddish tint— and also, blinding her. Shielding her eyes with a leather gloved hand, she watched the road with furrowed brows before directing her attention back to the boy.

"Sleep all you want, sir," she mocked, letting the pronoun slide off her tongue accusingly. "But when the aftermath of the rally, and I'm talking about when the herd of cattle, also known as people, come along... then again, you're sitting in a leaf pile so far from the road that people would be surprised you're still breathing, rather than dumped here dead."

At this, there was a loud clink of metal armor shifting, and the sound of about half a dozen footsteps. Disa stood frozen for a moment before scooting closer to the tree, but still a reasonable distance from the boy. The last thing that I need, is to have some idiot watchguard... Despite the situation and the current location, the footsteps halved, though they still seemed to be relatively close.

"Pain. I let the bullets fly, oh, I let them rain."

    OOC;; I apologize for a short-ish post.

  • ooc;
it's no problem at all ^_^
i'm actually gonna apologize ahead of time for my short post
i'm feeling sick and tuesdays are long days for me anyway,
so sorry if this is a lame post ~

    ic;
Adler crossed his arms again and sighed, shaking his head. He wasn't offended by her words, but rather annoyed by her attitude. "You keep calling me an idiot for not being at this rally - that I well knew about - but then, here you are out in the woods as well. So which are you? The lazy bum or a criminal? Please, do tell." With her comment about the troll, he couldn't help but roll his eyes. "You just insulted yourself, Sunshine." As the sun shifted the young man was forced to cover his own eyes to keep from being blinded. Taking his own step back, he stepped into a shaded patch, dropping his arm and following her gaze towards the road.

Cursing softly, he ran a hand through his hair again, removing it from his slightly damp forehead. He thought for sure he'd come farther from civilization than this. Sure it was annoying that she'd woken him, but if he was honest, he would've been woken by a passing carriage or someone on horseback sooner or later. "Not too many people leave the beaten trail to search random piles of leaves for bodies," he pointed out, not looking back at her, but keeping his pale blue eyes on the road. "Besides, I blend in well enough. You didn't see me, after all." Where her voice was flat and hostile, Adler had managed to keep his neutral and light. He wasn't phased by her aggression in the slightest. When you grow up in a large family with a single mother, you get used to hostility pretty quickly.

When the girl suddenly moved closer to him, still keeping her distance, of course, Adler dropped his arms and rolled his eyes again. "What do you think you're doing? Get going on your merry way." He obviously hadn't heard the noises she had heard, therefore not realizing the danger they were potentially in. His posture was still lax and unconcerned with the problems of the world around him. Little did the carefree soul know how fast things were about to change for him.

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer."

Disa looked at the boy incredulously, unaware that he hadn't heard any noise. She remained silent, though felt the need to cringe or flinch when he stepped out into the pure daylight, a rabbit sitting unaware in the middle of a lion pen. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, to get him to close his, but the footsteps stopped. Abruptly. Alertly.

She didn't bother with a groan, let alone with a silent one and only stood there, clutching the tree like it was a relative. At that point, maybe it was; after all, she didn't have any left— none that she cared for, anyways. The footsteps began again, each crunch of leaf getting closer and closer and all she could do was squeeze her eyes shut for a moment. She prayed that by then, the boy had noticed the noise.

The girl didn't even dare look the boy in the eye, much less speak to him. Shaking off her pride and embarrassment of hugging a tree like she was lost, she stilled, holding her breath. If they hadn't already been given away, they sure as hell weren't going to hear her breathing. She didn't bother with prayers, or superficial things like crossing her fingers, because to her, those were only silly superstitions and if something was going to happen, it was going to happen, regardless of someone's hope.

Perhaps they'd go away, or she'd go unrecognized, or perhaps the boy was not a criminal at all, and he'd go unrecognized. She contemplated running faster than the daylight streaming through the branches, but that would be a fool's mistake if they hadn't already been found, and resorted to calming herself down silently and nonchalantly.

But her attention was tipped from her thoughts to something else when she felt a hand on her forearm. She didn't bother herself with screaming and only stared at the man who gripped her arm, masked with a dark cloth in a way that any guard would not have, only a bandit. She found it hard to breathe, and she silently cursed the fact that she just trekked through the goddamn forest without a trace of an issue. But disregarding that, she brought up her other arm forward to hit the man in the temple with the jagged edge of her bracer, and having succeeded, he staggered back while the low-strung, leafless branches flicked him in the face, forcing him to let go of her arm.

She didn't take any more time than to grab the boy's arm and pull him in the general direction in which she planned to run, whatever that was. She opened her mouth to tell him to run, but the lack of air caused nothing to come out, although the silence was parted by the other bandits alerting eachother of the two teenagers.

"Pain. I let the bullets fly, oh, I let them rain."

  • It didn't take long for the perceptive young man to realize what was going on. This time, he'd heard the noise and after years of learning to keep his head down when it mattered, he knew it couldn't be good. Going against his nature and falling silent, Adler looked around, cursing lightly under his breath. This was bad... Without even knowing who was out there, he had an uneasy feeling in his gut. Not too many people wandered this far from the small town... heck, that was why he liked it out here so much.

All at once, everything escalated. Adler saw a man in dark clothing come out of the trees and grab the girl's forearm. He took a step forward, ready to help, when someone hooked their arms under his armpits and over his head, locking him in a tight hold. "Hey!" he yelled, struggling against the hold. "Gah! Let go!" Throwing his head back, he struck the man in the face, shooting an explosion of pain through the back of his own head. As the man's grip weakened in shock, Adler thrust his arms down, breaking the hold. Stumbling forward, he brought a hand up to his head, cringing a bit.

Without warning, someone grabbed his wrist. Looking up with wild eyes, he saw that the girl had broken free from her own captor. For the moment, they were free, but if Adler knew anything about bandits, it was that there were definitely more where this came from. Letting the girl drag him away from the clearing, the young man quickly gained his own footing and started speeding up a little, reversing the roles. If anyone was going to lead them out of here, it was going to be him.

"This way!" Adler called back to the girl, jumping over a small boulder that jutted out of the ground. "There's a river up ahead! If we can get across it, we can lose them." Of course, he hadn't seen the river just yet this season and they'd had significantly more rain than in recent years. If the current was moving too fast, they would have to find another option. But, of course, Adler wasn't considering that as the two ran for their lives.

As they drew nearer to the water, the ground grew softer and damp. It became slightly difficult for the young troublemaker to keep his footing, but somehow, by the grace of God or adrenaline, he managed to stay on his feet. Rushing forward, they broke the last of the trees. When he stopped running, at the edge of the raging river, Adler was breathing hard. His heart beat hard in his throbbing head and despite everything, he could hear footsteps drawing nearer. Cursing, he realized why his plan wouldn't work.

"No.. The water's moving too fast... There's no way..." Cursing again, he grabbed her wrist and started dragging her down the side of the river. They were sitting ducks out here, but he had a feeling they were still fairly far ahead of the bandits on their trail. It wasn't until they broke into a clearing that was surrounded by trees on all sides except for one. The one edge of the clearing that wasn't all foliage, was a sheer drop off that lead into the raging river. That was their best bet. If they jumped in down there, they could ride the current without getting crushed by the rocks and branches that would harm them further upstream. Of course, Adler had no idea what lied beyond this area... If they couldn't get out of the current once they were down there... "We have to jump!"

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer."

Disa was only one pace behind the boy the entire time they fled through the trees. Considering her hostility towards him and his demeanor back, anyone, including herself, would be surprised to see them fleeing a group of bandits. Despite keeping up with him, her lungs burned and the shortness of breath was not going away, and she found herself gasping for breath when they stopped at the river, though not for long, as they continued on to a clifflike edge, further down and higher upon the river.

Over the combined rush of the current, she usually wouldn't have been able to hear what he said. But what he said seemed to ring with such clarity that she only stared at the current. She peered over her shoulder at the trees for a moment; they likely left the bandits in the dust, especially being that they were attempting to catch two of them as a group, but they could show up any moment. Due to her shallow breathing, her voice was quieter than she would have liked when she asked, "Is it even worth it?" but a moment later, she reminded herself aloud, "These aren't guards." It's not jail time we're dealing with.

There was a crashing of brush behind them and she shook her head while looking at the boy. The prospect of jumping into the current, despite the danger, didn't spark any fear within her. However, the thought of the stress her lungs would be under did. If I can barely breathe now... She shook her head again, but this time, for herself, and a shiver passed down her spine. She knew that if they took off their shoes, the bandits would only use them as evidence, and they'd be left with no shoes on possibly rocky terrain.

Finally, she nodded and took as deep of a breath that her lungs would allow her. There was another particularly loud crash and then she heard the whoosh of an arrow, which fortunately for them, flew pitifully far away from them. "Now!" she got out, before sprinting to the edge and launching herself off. This go around, she didn't have time to remind herself not to scream fearfully, and her stomach did somersaults as she heard the wind rush past her ear. With her position, she couldn't see if the boy had followed her actions or not. She could only hope that he did.

She hit the water cleanly, though causing a massive splash. Her feet sliced through the water and she bobbed under for a long moment. She felt the water sting her eyes and she began to float upwards naturally, until she broke the surface. She had just enough time to get in a gulp of air before being plunged back under the surface, though she did manage to do a quick scan for the boy.

  • "These guys aren't coming to give us hugs and chocolates!" Adler had dealt with bandits before. It may not have been these specifically, but he knew better than to wait them out. And, even if it had been guards instead, it wasn't like he wouldn't have gone to extreme lengths to escape them either. "Look, it's jump or get caught. Your chances of survival are better with the deadly water currents."

Luckily, the girl didn't take much convincing. Before he could say anything else, an arrow whizzed past them - far enough away to not do any damage, but close enough to be heard. Adler flinched a little, ducking at the mere thought of them being under fire. Every instinct in his body screamed for him to jump, but his conscience warned him against going without the stranger. Why was his human decency speaking to him now? It had been so long since he'd actually listened to the little voice in his head.

But when he turned back to say something to her, he realized she was diving off the ridge. Cursing, the young man ran to the side in time to see her land cleanly before poking her head up a couple meters down. Cursing again, he turned back to see how close the bandits were. What he'd been hoping for was a small gauge of how much time he had before the crooks were upon him. What he got, was an arrow to the shoulder.

Gasping in shock and gently putting his hand up to the shaft of the projectile sticking out of his shoulder, he took a step back towards the edge. Bandits were coming out of the trees now, bows and other weapons at the ready. Adler cursed as some blood began staining his shirt. Well... I guess there's no other option, after all... And with that, he let himself fall backwards off the edge, his arms outstretched for part of the way. Right before he hit the water, he managed to position himself to where he wouldn't disable himself upon impact.

Hitting the water and diving deep underneath the surface, the young lad simply floated in oblivion for a moment. Everything slowed down and for a moment, even the pain in his shoulder was gone. How had he been that stupid? It wasn't like an arrow to the shoulder would be a big deal or anything. It had gone straight through, after all. All he would have to do is break off the end and pull it out. Suddenly, realization of his situation returned and Adler felt the strong pull of the water on his clothes and his skin. Realizing the pressure to his lungs, he managed to rise to the top, breaking the surface and gasping before being dragged under again.

Once again, the 19 year old had underestimated the power of the current they'd just recklessly plunged themselves into. He broke the surface again, a short distance from where he'd hit the water initially. Part of him was trying to be rational and remain calm in the face of the insanity, but the very human part of him was starting to panic. Had he just jumped to his death? Better yet, had he just convinced someone else to jump to their death? Unable to ponder this for long, Adler realized very quickly that he had more to worry about that just getting sucked under the current.

Up ahead were a series of boulders planted in the water like obstacles to be avoided. If he'd had the sense to curse, he would've. One of the recent storms would have probably cast the giant rocks down from a nearby hill, making for a rather dangerous journey down the river. Great. Managing to stay at the surface of the raging water, Adler struggled to swim far enough left that he wouldn't be splattered against the side of the rock. He managed to get over far enough to avoid being killed, but not fast enough to avoid the rock all together.

Striking the side of the rock hard, he let out a sharp cry before water filled his mouth. His momentum plus the impact rolled him over, allowing the rough surface of the boulder to scrape away skin on his back and side. Luckliy, however, the impact also broke the arrow, tearing part of it away. Once he was floating downstream again, he managed to pull the other part free after returning to the surface and sputtering for air.

Managing to avoid the other rocks, Adler thought he could get to the bank. He thought he could make it and end this nightmare. They'd entered a part of the woods he wasn't really familiar with - 'they' provided the girl was still alive. This is why, when he heard the loud roar of the waterfall, the young man was utterly horrified. There was no way they could avoid that. Struggling against the current, he tried anyway, gradually getting sucked closer and closer until past the point of no return.

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer."

Disa struggled to stay above the surface for a few small-minded moments before realizing to relax. As she did, she made her way up to the surface and went below it much less than before. A few feet away— and somehow in front of her, despite her jumping first, she heard a splash. She prayed, despite her thinking of praying as superstitious, that it was the boy and not a crazed bandit. They're smarter than this.

She was immensely grateful that she taught herself to swim at a young age, being that no one else of the family would have, with their drunkardness and ignorance. However, the current was still unpredictable and far from gentle, and she found it difficult still to stay above the surface.

From as far as she could tell, the current was clear at that point and time— but then again, she was also being spun and tossed like something on a spit. However, when there was something, she noticed it. And thus, she noticed and acknowledged the fact that they were hurtling toward boulders and bramble, and had she had the breath, she would have said something— even if it would make a sailor blush. But she only felt her heartbeat quicken further, if that was even possible. She tried to sort her thoughts and think sensibly, but everything was happening, and she found it much too fast for her liking.

She did her best to dive away from the boulders, though the boy was not as fortunate. She saw him scrape the edge of a boulder and cringed, though she didn't have the breath to make a sound. In the aftermath of being distracted, the current rolled her over to find a fairly large rock before her, in which she did her best to work against the current to get away from. Still, however, the current lifted her onto her back and her leg hit it forcibly, sending her spinning and gasping for air. She winced at the pain on her shin and the sting that the river caused, but continued to dodge the boulders to the best of her ability.

Suddenly, the roar of rushing water filled her ears and she felt as if the time had frozen for a short, blissful second. "No," she gritted out, and tried frantically to grasp something. She passed some branches from a tree, it's arm bowed from years of exhaustion, and latched onto it. It held her for a short moment before snapping, flinging her closer to the roar and snapping against her face and scratching her cheek moderately.

She saw the boy up ahead and only the wished that they'd end up in the same place. She wanted to scream as much as her lungs did, and her shin suddenly became much less bearable. But she didn't have much time to complain, before she felt herself tip over the edge to plunge down to the water below. She felt her pulse everywhere, an erratic rhythm and beat, and that was all she could feel and hear, as her vision filled with white from fear. When she hit the water below, she felt the little breath she had be knocked from her, and everything went black.

adler had never swam so hard in his life. he fought against the current like his life depended on it... cause it kind of did. though he couldn't see the bank over the powerful waves that continually washed over him, he knew he had to be close... he had to be. but with one final push, he realized it wasn't enough. the current grabbed him and pulled him back, erasing all of the nonexistent progress he'd made to get away from it. there was no time left to think as he was thrust towards the raging waterfall and then right over the edge. for a moment, it was almost like he was floating, suspended in time. they say before you die your life flashes before your eyes, but even with the illusion of time standing still, adler didn't even have time to brace himself for the impending impact, let alone remember the swell times he hadn't had with his family.

this time when he hit the water, adler was much less graceful than before. with flailing arms and legs, he landed on his back, smacking the air straight out of his lungs and instantly bombarding his mouth with water. thrusting up as hard as he could, he broke the surface long enough to dispel the water and catch his breath again before the sheer power of the waterfall forced him under again. he could feel the water tugging against his clothes again, though not as strong as it had been above. he would just have to swim a bit before he could resurface without threat of being dragged under by the colossal waterfall.

starting to move away from the area where the water looked most disturbed, adler was more than shocked to hear a spash resonate through the water behind him. it wasn't loud like the waterfall, but different... like something heavy being dropped in the water. turning back around and pushing against the weak current, he made out a blurry body in the water. already the young man's lungs were beginning to burn and the pressure in his head was harsh enough to make his vision turn wonky. though he couldn't make out who the body was, logic dictated it was the girl he'd been running with. that presented a problem.

he needed to breathe, but he couldn't resurface until he got farther away from the falls. but then... the girl wasn't swimming at all, but rather sinking deeper into the water. he couldn't leave her. after all, it was kind of his fault they were in this mess for not realizing there was a giant waterfall farther down the river. though every instinct in him was screaming for him to leave her and get to the surface for some air, it was actually his conscience that won out. it had been so long since he'd actually listened to the voice in his head...

turning back and swimming against the current, using what little adrenaline he had left, he closed the gap between them. as he swam closer and deeper, the pressure from the water made his head ache. his vision was beginning to go black around the edges and his lungs burned from lack of oxygen. with one last, desperate thrust, he reached out to grab her outstretched arm. his hand wrapped around her thin wrist. he'd actually caught her! but it was too soon to celebrate. putting in a great deal of effort, he pulled her closer to him, praying to reach the surface before they both drowned.

as he pulled her towards him, though, the combination of the output of strength he'd given and the complete and utter exhaustion of his body, adler lost what was left of his breath. unable to hold his breath anymore, he gasped and water instantly filled his mouth. using his free hand to cover his moth, he squeezed his eyes shut. no! not like this! he'd been close to death so many other times. it couldn't end here!

pulling the girl up again, he used her momentum to push her towards the surface, propelling himself as well. everything was dark now and he had no idea which direction they were actually moving. this time his life did flash before his eyes and the more he realized what was happening, the weaker he became. as the memories dragged on, the pain faded from adler's body. slowly, his hand dropped from his face and he stopped fighting the water. with his hand still wrapped tight around the girl's wrist, he let go of everything else and faded into nothing.

adler next woke up to water forcing its way up his throat and out of his mouth. rolling onto his side, he promptly deposited the liquid onto the pebbly bank beneath him until his throat burned and his stomach felt like it was doing back flips. once he was finished vomiting, he coughed and hacked until he collapsed weakly onto his stomach. the cool wet gravel stuck to his face as he closed his eyes. he was alive... but... how...?

suddenly, he remembered what he'd been doing a moment before blacking out. he twitched his hand a bit and realized it was still wrapped tight around the girl's wrist. despite everything, they'd made it. sure he was scraped and bloody and a bit more like a drowned rat than he'd ever care to be again, but they'd made it. closing his eyes, he just let his body go limp for a bit.

    Disanna Ara Mitland

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer."

Disa woke with a shudder and she sat up too suddenly for her to handle, and she clutched her head and laying back down on the pebbled sand. It took several moments for to remind herself to breathe and took a deep breath that made her wince. Her throat burned as if someone had her eat sandpaper for a meal, and she took several minutes of consoling herself and her breathing. With that, she hadn't even noticed the boy or his grasp on her wrist until several tedious moments later. She pulled her wrist back, opening her mouth to take in a breath of air that wheezed, and felt the need to vomit, though she miraculously didn't.

She only laid there for what felt like hours before she had the remote energy to say, "Thank you." Clearly, considering the fact that she didn't remember anything past the painful impact of the water and she woke up on the bank, he had some involvement. Suddenly, she remembered his shoulder and she turned her head sharply, earning another wince, to look at him. "Your shoulder," she said blankly.

While it was still difficult to breath from the stress of the water, she found that it was a bit easier to breath then than before. She had no idea how long it had been since they went over the edge, nor how long the boy had been awake. She took a moment each to slowly move each limb, checking to see if anything was broken; nothing was, though she remembered her shin and her face from the branches. Subconsciously, her fingers went to her cheek to find that it had scabbed over, though she waited, once again, a few moments before sitting up painfully and slowly and checking her shin.

The rock had torn her pant leg and skinned her leg itself, though it wasn't anything drastic, despite the fact of the sand making it sting just enough to make her eyes water. I went over a waterfall and escaped bandits— but her mind suddenly flashed to the thought of wonder of whether or not they had caught up. There was no way she could run at that point, and she felt that she'd rather die slowly at the corrupt hands of bandits than go over a cliff with running water again.

She turned to face the boy and squinted. "What's your name, anyways?"
