The paranormal is no longer out of the ordinary. In fact, it’s become a part of people’s everyday lives. But, nothing was as dramatic as the surplus of ghosts. And for some living in Silverwick, ghosts are now the very source of their jobs. Jobs involving them include: making defenses against them (stuff made from silver, iron, salt, and lavender), studying their recent infestation, and by far the most important, hunting them. Hunters, as they are called, are self-employed or agency-employed teenagers that aren’t afraid to find and subdue what goes bump in the night. Teenagers and younger children are the only people that have a strong Talent to sense these monsters.
Number One Law for Powerful Ghosts - Don’t touch them.
Why? - Ectoplasm from stronger ghosts will kill you.
[This thread is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's book series, Lockwood & Co.]
Listen - The ability to hear the voices of the dead, the echoes of past events, and other unnatural sounds accompanying manifestations of ghosts.
Sight - The psychic ability to see apparitions and other ghostly phenomena.
Touch - The ability to detect psychic echoes from objects.
In order of effectiveness:
Silver - Typical silver items can be made: necklaces, home decorations, earrings. Defenses don’t have to be noticeable in order to work.
Iron - This is more used by Hunters, usually in the form of iron filings, rapiers, and chains. Also, iron can be made for home decorations.
Salt - Used in many household deterrents, salt isn’t as potent as silver and iron. But, it can be made into salt-bombs: a small plastic throwing-globe filled with salt.
Lavender - The strong sweet smell of this plant is thought to discourage evil spirits. As a result, many people wear dried sprigs of lavender, or burn it to release the pungent smoke. Hunters sometimes carry vials of lavender water to use against weak Type Ones.
Type One - The weakest, most common, and least dangerous grade of ghosts. They are scarcely aware of their surroundings, and they are locked in a single, repetitious pattern of behavior. Type Ones include:
Shades - Most common, and can appear quite solid or insubstantial and wispy. Unaware of the presence of the living, and fixed in a pattern of behavior. They project feelings of grief and loss, but they seldom display anger or any stronger emotion.
Gray Hazes - Lack the power to form coherent apparitions and manifest as shapeless patches of faintly glinting mist. You can safely walk through them. They only spread chill and unease.
Lurkers - Hangs back in the shadows, rarely moves, and never approaches the living. They spread strong feelings of anxiety and inexplicable dread.
Stalkers - They seem drawn to the living, following at a distance, but never venturing close.
Cold Maidens - A gray, misty female form. They radiate powerful feelings of melancholy. However, they rarely draw close to the living.
Gibbering Mist - A weak, insubstantial ghost. It’s notable for its deranged and repetitive chuckling that sounds like it’s coming from behind you.
Glimmers - They manifest only as flecks of light flitting through the air. They can be touched and walked through without any harm.
Stone Knockers - They do nothing more than tap.
Wisps - Manifests as a pale, flickering flame. They are weak and generally unthreatening.
Type Two - The most dangerous commonly occurring grade of ghost. Stronger than Type Ones, these ghosts possess some kind of residual intelligence. They are aware of the living, and may attempt to harm them. In order of commonness:
Specters - Most commonly encountered Type Two. They always form clear, detailed apparitions, and almost seem solid. Many are neutral or benign with their dealings with the living. Some, however, are actively hostile and hungry for human contact.
Phantasms - Maintains an airy, delicate, and see-through form. They may also be invisible, aside from its faint outline and a few wispy details of its face and features. They are no less aggressive than a Specter, and they are all the more dangerous for being harder to see.
Wraiths - Similar to Specters in strength and behavior, but far more horrible to look at. Their apparitions show the deceased in their dead state, and they can often appear as skeletons, too.
Changers - They are rare and dangerous. They have the ability to alter their appearance during a manifestation.
Fetches - A rare, unnerving class of ghost that appears in the shape of another person, usually someone known to the onlooker. They are seldom aggressive, but the fear and disorientation they evoke is strong. Fetches must be treated with extreme caution.
Limbless - They are swollen and misshapen. They generally have a human head and a torso, but are lacking recognizable arms and legs.
Poltergeists - They are powerful and destructive. They release strong bursts of supernatural energy that can even lift heavy objects into the air. They don’t form apparitions.
Rawbones - A rare and unpleasant ghost. They manifest as a bloody, skinless corpse with goggling eyes and grinning teeth. People believe that they are a variation of Wraiths.
Solitary - An unusual type. Usually encounter in remote and perilous places. They don’t draw close to the living. However, victims of theirs are overwhelmed with fear and try to throw themselves to their deaths in an effort to end it all.
Type Three - A very rare grade of ghost, and the subject of much controversy. They are allegedly able to communicate fully with the living.
