Hey, guys. I thought I'd set up a nice little roleplay based off of a crazy idea I've had floating around in my head for a little while. We'll see how it goes, though.
Have you ever seen Firefly? The old 2000s show by Josh Whedon where Nathan Fillion and his group of no-good scumbags go around in a spaceship and cause trouble for everyone they meet? This roleplay is sort of like that. Except much more inspired by a heist story, and generally the characters are slightly good people.
GENERAL BACKSTORY
Remember Earth? Not a lot of people do. The year is 1878 AE. After Earth. Approximately 4000 years ago, the Earth died. Speculation abounds about what exactly caused it, but the general consensus is that humans screwed up (again) and in the process completely destroyed their home planet. But fortunately for them, they had seen this destruction happening from quite a ways away, and created the Colony Ships to take us to our new home.
Anyways, we (this one Colony Ship) ended up traveling to this distant star system, known as L-1-33T01, or as the average person nowadays calls it, New Sol. Rolls off the tongue a lot quicker. There were other Colony Ships sent out, but as far as we know, we're the only people who made it. (See later)
Nowadays, you're either rich, living the easy life, you're an average person, trying your best, you're an asteroid miner, hoping to strike it rich, or you're a criminal.
We chose the latter.
SPACE TRAVEL
Travel between the planets and moons is common enough. Many people own Solar Vessels, and those that don't hopefully have enough to purchase travel on one of the countless ferries and travel that way.
Solar Vessels are nice, but they have one major drawback, and that is that they're powered by solar panels. That means that no matter how hard you try, it's impossible for you to go farther than the Remains. Now, that drawback could be alleviated by a powerful enough generator... But you'd have to have a massive ship in order to carry that generator, which means more mass you'd have to push, which means more energy required, which means a bigger generator... and so on. Not since the original Colony Ships have we managed to pull a feat like that off.
The ship you'll be flying in is known as the Reckless. I own it. She's a Silverwing-class cruiser, built for speed and transport more than straight-up combat. Which, should Lady Luck swing in our favor, should be just what we need.
PLANET INFORMATION
There are seven planets in New Sol. There were nine, but, well... Calamity.
These are the 'Big Three', as they're known.
The closest to the sun is Duma. Duma was where the Colony Ship first landed, and you can still find the massive remains of it there. Nowadays, those remains are home to the largest archive in history, OF history. If you want to find any books, whether digital or physical, or any newspaper, or anything else, that'd be the place to find it. The only other thing I can really say about Duma is that it's a major tourist site. Lots of people got there to see its tropical beaches and it's scenic mountains. Other than that, it's a scorching hellhole and I hate it.
Right after Duma is Kazann. Despite Duma being the first planet humans arrived on when they came to New Sol, Kazann has become the major hub for basically everyone. Rich humans, poor humans, Kith attempting to integrate into society, and of course, the criminal underbelly feeding off of everyone else. Kazann isn't nearly as pretty as Duma is, but it is a lot bigger, and much of that space has been taken up by cities, factories, and smaller hovels and villages. Environmental activists argue that we're killing the planet, but... Hey, we've got six other that aren't getting screwed over, so why worry too much?
The last Core Planet is Allhalva. A testament to human greed and ignorance, but also potentially to their ability to rebuild. Allhalva is home to a species of furry little folks, called Kith. The Kith were peaceful, and minded their own business, until, naturally, human colonists showed up and completely decimated their way of life. That, granted, was only in the early years, and since then we've come to a truce. A fair one. Kith live in our cities, and have more or less integrated into our society, but we've mostly left Allhalva alone since then. Hopefully it'll stay that way.
After the Big Three, there's not exactly a whole lot to say. There are four gas giant planets, but the only place we can live on those is their moons, most of which are the equivalent to either mining towns or just generic homes. Not a lot going on.
Finally, the Remains.
Remember the thing I said about there being a whole lot more Colony Ships? Well, the original plan was to have each ship be equipped with a brand-new technology called Hyperspace Gates. With these, solar vessels should have been able to travel between star systems at incredible speeds, with little to no interference. It was an experimental technology, given that you had to have two of them built in order to work properly, but theoretically they should have worked.
Spoilers: It didn't.
Instead, it exploded on its first trial run, killing thousands and shattering two planets. Nowadays, the only thing left after Calamity is a graveyard of planet shards, asteroids, and hunks of metal. Killed that dream, huh?
KITH
Who doesn't like the Kith? Well, that's not fair. A lot of people don't like the Kith, just because they're aliens. It's hardly fair. They think and feel and act just like we do. The only difference is that they're short and covered in fur.
The typical Kith is about two feet tall, give or take, and has feline features such as whiskers, pointy ears like a cat's, pawlike hands, and a general layer of fur covering their body. Kith also tend to be slender, and muscular, as if they're going to pounce on you at any moment.
Kith do have claws, although the usage of them among traditionalist Kith is deemed uncivilized and brutal.
THE CREW
That's you. I hope. I need six more crew members, hopefully with sufficient experience and skill in the sort of unruly behavior I'm going to be encouraging.
(If you need something to help you kickstart your idea for a character, here are some archetypes you could consider working off of:
The Pilot
The Hacker
The Brawler
The Gunslinger
The Actor
The Stealthy Person
The Connection (someone with connections in high places)
The Funder (rich person)
The Traitor (message me if YOU want to be the sneaky traitor on the team)
don't feel limited by these, though. However, I would prefer having a balanced team to some extent.)

THE FORM
(some notes before we continue: Like Firefly, this world is deeply rooted in a sort of old west/Victorian steampunk fashion and sensibility. Rich folks wear outrageous suit jackets and dresses and all sorts of fun steampunk-y things. I gave my character the coat from Bloodborne, just as like an example, but you can range anywhere from that sort of fashion to the more Malcom Reynolds- sort of outlaw suspenders gun-holster what have you. I don't really care)
It's been so long since I've made one of those, let's see how we do...
Name:
Age:
Species: (Kith or human?)
Birth Gender:
Preferred Pronoun:
Skills: (max 2)
Weaknesses: (min 1)
Physical Description: (Just a few sentences, or a picture or two. I'm not picky)
Personality: (Again, just a few sentences. Better to just let it come through naturally in the story)
Planet of Origin: (Did you read my planet list? :3 feel free to make up a moon or something, too)
A brief History: (Seriously. Try not to write an entire short story for me. Just something so that I can get the gist of things.)
Finally, anything else we should know about you? (Any family who we might come into contact with? Any enemies? Anything else? Put it here!
And, finally, MY form.
Name: Lilah Zinnes
Age: About 21? Hard to tell. She can definitely drink alcohol, though.
Species: Definitely a human.
Birth Gender: Female
Preferred Pronoun: She/Hers
Skills: (max 2) Lilah is surprisingly good at both coming up with elaborate schemes and twisted plots, and at lying about them to other people. She's so good at lying, as a matter of fact, that many people who get to know her don't ever take anything she says at face value.
Weaknesses: (min 1) Lilah is a total weakling, insofar as she can barely throw a punch, and gets the wind knocked out of her with even the slightest tap. Kind of sucks, but hopefully, if everything goes according to plan, she won't have to fight at all.
Physical Description: Lilah has red hair, and freckles. Her hair is about shoulder-length, but she always has it tied back tightly, so that it doesn't get in her face. She hates that. Her eyes are a piercing green, like most gingers, and she has a smattering of freckles. Also she wears this coat:
Yayyyy Bloodborne!
Personality: Kind of not a good person. Obviously. Lilah makes a living as a thief and a con artist. She's nice enough, and this isn't a facade, but she also has a darker side to her. One that sees danger in every step, and assumes that everyone's out to get her.
On the other hand, she is currently captaining a small crew of dangerous criminals in an attempt to pull of several grand heists, so she could be totally justified.
A nice person, so long as you don't get on her bad side.
Planet of Origin: Lilah is from (originally) the planet Duma. However, her family moved to a small asteroid mining colony when she was very young, and made a small fortune there. She left them when she was sixteen, however, due to a family squabble.
A brief History: As stated before, Lilah's family moved to a small asteroid mining operation when she was very young, and made a fortune there. They were the top dogs in the colony, given their money, but Lilah left them when she was sixteen due to her father being horrendously corrupt, and just kind of a big jerk. She left with her brother, but they have since separated due to their differences in morality.
Finally, anything else we should know about you? Lilah has a brother named Bernard, who left her family with her. He's three years older than her. The two don't talk that often, due to him not approving of her criminal life. She's okay with that, though.
