  • It's been three years since the Drulra Empire fell. Their last stand, an epic battle that spanned four days and thirteen galaxies, marked the end of an oppressive era. But all is not well. The five paladins of Voltron, the defenders of the known universe, sacrificed themselves to secure a victory. Traditionally, this is where the paladins' apprentices would step up and take control, but here's the catch: the lions, the components of Voltron, vanished. And what good is a paladin sans ship, armor, and bayard? The Voltron apprentices were disbanded.

Without the paladins and their lions to guide and protect them, the Empire fragmented and dissolved into chaos. Pockets of Drulra influence remain, fighting to re-establish the Empire, while elsewhere entire planets are at war trying to establish independent governments. The Empire's robeasts run free and newly-liberated prisoners need to find their way home. Every Drulra facility, from hospitals to factories, has gone to seed.

But from this darkness there emerges a glimmer of light. The lions of Voltron were recently recovered, and the five apprentices summoned to pilot them. Young and inexperienced, they are nonetheless the universe's only hope for peace and stability.

    The Team

Kaz Fenwick, paladin of the Black Lion
Cecil Verglas, paladin of the Blue Lion
Quint Burns, paladin of the Red Lion
Bit Royu, paladin of the Green Lion
Arina Carnac, paladin of the Yellow Lion
Faren Silversmith, pilot of the Flying Brick

  • I was thinking I could take the one non-paladin, who would act as a commissioner and pilot of whatever the paladins use to get around in this continuity, and he paladin of whatever lion you guys don't want. Ideally though this would not be the Black Lion, since I don't want to play both leaders at once.

  • Ah i see. I don't mind taking pretty much any of the lions, but I'd really like to try my hand at blue for some reason, if that's alright with everyone else? ^u^

  • Go for blue, Terra! I also nominate you for the Black Lion, since you're an amazing writing and I'm awful at leading. xD Could I possibly take Green? The other color doesn't really matter to me; I could probably pull off Yellow or Red.

  • That's not true! You've done Petra all these years wonderfully! But I'll happily accept this nomination uwu
Also I'm not sure of the specifics exactly so I'm just going to write these like they haven't made any actual connections to the lions yet, because some part of me feels that forming those is part of the fun! These two boys took a while to dream up but here we are~~ ^0^

    Name: Cecil Verglas
    Age: 18
Race: Diamantian (pretty much human in all ways but name)
    Home Planet: Diamant
Appearance: Cecil has very angular features, from his nose to the bend of his elbow. Even the way he stands makes him look sharp. He's got short, greasy, stark white hair and piercing ice blue eyes "like limpid tears" lmaooooooo jk. He's tall and scrawny, the kind of kid that only grows vertically and probably sits at the very edge of "underweight" for his age group. He has a slightly-paler-than-caucasian skin tone because where he comes from, they don't get a lot of sun. (Maybe I'll draw him at a later date?)
Personality: Well guys, I won't lie he's kind of a jerk. He's very stuck up and persnickety and isn't well-liked by a lot of people–needless to say, teamwork comes hard to him. He's harsh towards others as a way of redirecting his own intrapersonal negativity and tends to shut himself off when it comes to emotionally connecting with others. He doesn't mind physical proximity (within the boundaries of usual personal space of course), but he's hard-pressed to make meaningful connections beyond snark and pretentiousness and would honestly just deal with his problems on his own. In extremely opposing contrast, he really wants to connect with others, and really does try to push himself into it sometimes. At the same time, he's horribly impudent and childish and extremely fun to rile up because he gets all sputtery. He gets flustered very easily and likes to have the last say in things. Sometimes he gets a little solemn though, because he does recognize that his behavior pushes people away. All in all, he's pretty civil until someone oversteps their bounds, whether it be another paladin, a random planet-goer or even himself.
History (pre- and post-apprenticeship): Cecil was raised in the upper-middle bourgeoisie class of the planet Diamant, named fittingly for the way its cities have emerged from the harsh, almost uninhabitable tundra climate. He was taught strictly by his father that the "only way to be successful in life is to treat things like you already are." This became Cecil's go-to justification for pretty much all of his actions, resulting in a closed-off, business-like personality from pretty much day one. He was second in-line to take over his father's business after his older sister, and despite knowing he would likely never own it he worked tirelessly in its interest nonetheless. Then when he was sixteen, he was apprenticed under the paladins by direction of his father, who thought it would be best for him. Cecil himself wasn't actually too keen on the idea at first, but he had to admit that the title "defender of the universe" had an ambitious sort of sound to it that drew him in. When the apprenticeships disbanded, he kinda just went back home and currently works together with his sister, recovering from the adolescent embarrassment of thinking he could actually be a paladin.
    Lion: Blue
Bayard: he was practically raised into fencing but, seeing as sabers are quite flimsy, his bayard takes on the form of a thin, lightweight sword.
Any special powers?: well, he's definitely got a penchant for making snide comments that never seem to miss their mark. that's gotta mean something lol
Give me a fun fact or two:

    • Don't worry my friends, Cecil will figure his life out
    • He complains a lot when things don't go his way
    • He comes off as pretty cold when you first meet him, until you realize he's the universe's #1 virgin and is so unbelievably innocent that it brings the others around him heart failure
    • His last name can be translated to "black ice" in french, the kind you can't see but is super slippery and dangerous. The name of his planet means "diamond."
    • If he hadn't become a paladin, he'd probably have gone into business, and would've likely created a steel company of his own if only compete with his sister's iron company

    Name: Kaz Fenwick
    Age: 20
    Race: Human
    Home Planet: Earth
Appearance: Kaz is pretty pretty, if I'm being honest. He's got the kind of face that makes women want to date him and men want to punch him (but that could also be his intolerable personality). All in all he's pretty average otherwise: he's got brown hair and an east-asian complexion, thanks to his mom's side of the family. He also wears glasses (his vision is really terrible like he's blind okay). He's of average height and weight and just enough muscle to be considered Desirably Toned (tm).
Personality: Wow this kid's horrible. Like okay that's not true he's actually a pretty great leader but let me layer some things up for you because this character's complex. At first glance, he's got a terrible personality: bad jokes and the cheeky inability to take an insult as an actual insult are just two of his many finer qualities. He has no problem pointing out other's faults at first, but doesn't actually get mad very often. Actually I can't name a lot of things that would make him mad, and that's where his good qualities actually start. He's very level-headed and analytical, prefers to think his way through things before he acts. He's good at adapting to a situation, even in the middle of a fight. He's surprisingly responsible and dependable despite being such a butt hole, but has the tendency to shoulder his concerns to prevent bothering other people. He's actually very insecure in his role as a leader, because he's always been used to taking care of himself and isn't actually that sure how to support a team emotionally. He works hard though, and deep down he means well, and hopefully some day it'll all pay off.
History (pre- and post-apprenticeship): His isn't as happy and clean cut as Cecil's. He grew up alone with his dad, which wasn't too much of a problem on its own. Eventually, his dad grew distant, and at a young age Kaz became self-dependent and responsible. He walked himself to school, made his own dinner (sometimes he'd leave some out for his dad), did all his homework by himself. By the time he went off to flight school he was filling out all the paperwork on his own. He eventually dropped out to apprentice for te voltran, which eventually fell apart. But he did well in flight school, and when he returned to earth he settled back in to finish out his final year.
    Lion: Black
Bayard: Kaz's bayard takes the form of a blaster
    Any special powers?: nope
Give me a fun fact or two:

    • He's comedically renowned for being the worst shot on the team, despite maintaining machine-like precision in pretty much every other analytical field.
    • stress cooker
    • he was extremely resistant to the idea of being the Black Paladin at first, but he's growing into it
    • his dad loves him very much, and Kaz knows he's just busy, and despite their awkward relationship given his fathers almost complete absence throughout his childhood they maintain a friendly (if distant) disposition.
    • He was born 'n raised in ye good ole' land of the free
    • If he hadn't become a paladin, he'd probably have become a fighter pilot.
  • I was so prepared for either that I couldn't decide which I'd rather do - yellow or red xD But now I'm really excited because I found a quote for red and things happened and long story short both of my characters could be either side of this quote...

    "Technically it wasn't on fire..."
"Of course it wasn't on fire! You completely blew it up!"

    Name: Quint Burns
    Age: 18
    Race: Human
    Home Planet: Earth
Appearance: As far a humans go, Quint is pretty ordinary. Her round features and pale skin are accentuated by dark brown eyes and freckles en mass, which cover every inch of her skin. She isn't anything remarkable in the height department, standing maybe a little shorter than average, and is athletically built. Her most noticable feature is her hair, which is almost as vibrantly red as her lion. When not wearing her paladin armor (her go-to everyday dress), Quint keeps things simple with a red jersey (bearing the number 2) and jeans. Shoes are optional.
Personality: Quint is a fireball. There's no other way to put it. A quick wit and sharp instinct leave her a formidable foe, but they are just the beginning. Her most outstanding feature is her temper - and not outstanding in a good way. Any hint of a challenge, any flash of doubt, and she is on it like a wolf on a kill. The young pilot excels in both physical and verbal sparring, though her hot temper often leaves her arguments irrational. This trait doesn't mix well with her tendency to push her limits, pounding on her companions until they either collapse or stand up and fight. Physically, she also pushes herself, going and going until she cannot. in line with that, Quint is fiercely independent. She despises being unable to do things herself, and will never admit inability. Just agree with her capability and wait until she is too tired to protest your help.
History (pre- and post-apprenticeship): Quint was a cadet at the Galaxy Garrison, though the program was far from home. She grew up in a small Scottish town to a lower-middle class family, seemingly destined to spend her days roaming the green countryside. However, a move across the ocean and a knack for a flight simulator game lead from one thing to another, and she found herself in line for the Galaxy Garrison. Quint's natural skill at piloting and general spunk soon landed her in another coveted position: an apprentice of Voltron. After the fall, she never lost faith that, one day, the lions would be recovered and their works would start again.
    Lion: Red
    Bayard: Katana
    Any special powers?: Nope
Give me a fun fact or two:
    - Gets in a lot of verbal sparring matches with Cecil. Can't let his snide remarks go.
    - Despite moving away at the age of twelve, she retains a bit of an accent from her homeland.
    - Her relationship with Red is a bit strenuous at best
    - (She will be an bit of a butt at first - but character development is real)

    Name: Bit Royu
    Age: 16
    Race: Galra
    Home Planet: Name Unknown
Appearance: Fuzzy. Very fuzzy. Bit keeps his deep purple hair long enough to tie back in a small tail, though it often falls loose around his ears. Which, to be frank, are almost obnoxiously large. His skin is a just-barely-lighter shade of purple, and his eyes a pupil-less yellow. Bit's uniform consists of black pants and a dark green shirt which clashes horribly with his skin - either he doesn't know or doesn't care. Both hang loosely from a thin, short frame - Bit is roughly 5'3", though he attests to be taller. Fuzzy
Personality: Bit is an inquisitive, adventurous spirit. He has questions, and he will find answers. Good news is, this kid's brain is off-the-charts smart - just the tool for answering questions. Half the time those answers involve doing something stupid, but like I said - smart. Most of the time. Well, half of the time. The other half is composed of being a socially clueless, optimistic, and explosion-inducing little brother.
History (pre- and post-apprenticeship): Bit was born in space. As in, his family lived on a spaceship, traveling from planet to planet. Both of his parents were part of a research crew that traversed the galaxies, answering questions and finding new ones. With a science- and travel-immersed upbringing like his, it's no wonder that Bit found himself in love with both. He's faced prejudice his whole life, based solely on his species - it didn't seem to matter that his parents had abandoned the rapidly expanding empire, or that he'd never even seen his home planet. Most folks didn't like Galra, so they didn't like him. Bit feels incredibly fortunate that the Green Palidin saw a similar soul, and took him on without hesitation.
    Lion: Green
Bayard: Bo staff. Also does a shield form that he's learned to activate outside of Voltron.
Any special powers?: Nope. A whiz with technology, though.
Give me a fun fact or two:
    - Will do anything for "SCIENCE!"
    - Likes explosions
    - Reveres the rest of the team like a child to a superhero. Especially fond on Faren, and aspires to be just like him.
    - Absolutely star-struck by the vastness of space, and determined to explore it all one day.

  • Ohhhh my god the Cecil-Quint friction is sooooo real I live and breathe for it already. This is going to be great.

  • Really thou. So real. Real enough that I know she already hates him (though I presume we're starting out as a thrown-together team with little experience with each other?)

  • Oh yeah they're gonna have to come together for a serious heart to heart in the future if they wanna run any hope of getting along lol. And I'd think so? I'm not really sure what apprenticeship entails but idk how well they'd know each other

  • As apprentices, they would have seen each other a couple of times, but most of the training was one-on-one or one-apprentice-to-the-group, since the paladins never intended to all die at once and so they figured it would be more important for each new paladin to bond with the older members before they rotated in. Besides, it was risky to gather all the paladins and all the apprentices in one place at one time.
Also, the Drulra Empire was made up of two superpowers who merged 10,000 years prior to their fall, the Galra and the Drule.

  • Ahahah! >:D And now for my forms.

    Name: Faren Silversmith
    Age: 28
    Race: Olkari
    Home Planet: Olkarion
Appearance: Faren is about 5ft6 and plump for an Olkari, which means that to most other species he appears to be of average weight. As is typical of his kind, he has large green-and-purple eyes, a pointed bald head, and small antennae. He is almost never seen without his uniform, composed of a gray jumpsuit with a black and white vest over top.
Personality: Faron presents as a confident, thoughtful, good-natured leader with a slow, clear voice meant to hide his stutter. He usually ends up mediating disputes. However, if you catch him away from command he is actually shy, self-deprecating, and easily flustered. He is prone to ramble in casual conversation, at which point his enunciation goes to crap. Like most Olkari, he is adept with technology and there are very few who can surpass his knowledge of the Voltron lions' inner workings.
History: Faren was born to a pair of rebel technicians, so he grew up behind the scenes of the rebellion. Upon reaching adulthood he became a mechanic aboard a fighter carrier and, through a tangled turn of circumstances, ended up captaining one. Turns out this nerd was actually a pretty good leader, and he was promoted mere months before the war ended. He was honorably discharged following the rebel victory and became a recluse on Olkarion. But, when the lions were found, he was forced out of seclusion to help repair them and he sort of became a leader again.
Lion: None, but he pilots a massive cube-shaped ship that he jokingly calls the Flying Brick
Bayard: Also none. He can use a staff but largely avoids close combat.
Any special powers?: He can manipulate metal.
Give me a fun fact or two:

    • He built the Flying Brick himself.
    • Faren carries the distinction of being not only the youngest Olkari to have commanded a fleet during the war, but one of the few to actively partake in battle.
    • Only socially prominent Olkari have family names, so Silversmith is a name Faren chose upon becoming a commander.

    Name: Arina Carnac
    Age: 19
    Race: Altean
Home Planet: Sorrine, a diaspora of Altea
Appearance: Arina has tan, very freckled skin and flat auburn hair worn in a pixie cut. She has pink markings under her blue eyes. She is 5ft4 and fit in her natural form, but will make herself grow taller to attract attention or impress. She has adopted human fashion for her casual outfit, wearing slacks or leggings and a gold-colored jacket over a black tank top.
Personality: Though far from flighty, Arina is trusting and fiercely affectionate towards anyone who could be called an ally. She desires nothing more than for everyone to get along. Yet she has little respect for other's spacial boundaries. She hugs, high-fives, literally pats people on the back, you get it. She also has little respect for other's requests that she control her impulses. Arina has trouble admitting her frustrations and hates complaining (actual complaints; she will fuss jokingly). Whether this is due to her independence and pride or her desire to keep her peers happy is unknown even to her.
History: Arina grew up in a city on the wide steppes of Sorrine, a planet inhabited mainly by lumbering elephant-like Veldtbeasts and displaced Alteans. When she was 12, her planet was freed by Voltron, and therafter Arina became determined to aid the rebel effort. By 16, she was an accomplished pilot and had attracted the attention of the Voltron paladins. Since the Empire fell, she has returned to Sorrine and is trying to organize the Alteans who wish to remain and help those who want to return to their native planet.
    Lion: Yellow
    Bayard: An energy-bolt crossbow
Any special powers?: As an Altean, she can modify her appearance at will and is very strong.
Give me a fun fact or two:

    • She fears large animals because of a traumatic childhood experience with a Veldtbeast.
    • She once turned her whole body blue and held it for 24 hours to prove a point, though she spent sixteen hours immediately after that sleeping off the exhaustion.
    • Arina's the type of person who could start out mad as a hornet and end up drawing everyone into a bearhug a minute later.

Wow it's odd that I should be the last to have my forms up, huh? Anyway. I guess that's that!

The post was edited 16 times, last by Galestep ().

  • THE OLKARI YESSS I LOVED THOSE GUYS!! That's it, Faren is 100000000% Bit's Hero. Hero, with a capital 'H'. Everything from the tech skills to the staff to the Flying Brick (best name ever), Bit is on Faren like a wondrous puppy.

What I'm beginning to love is that Bit's Polar Opposite, aka Quint, is going to hate Arina. Absolutely despise her. Like, Cecil she can probably tolerate in small amounts. But (judging from her form) no one is going to piss Quint off more than Arina.

So, who wants to start?! Because I'm so very Super Hype right now!!! I love all your characters like they're my own!

  • Cecil's probably going to have lots of respect for Arina and I'm pretty sure he'd actually like her well enough (socially stunted as he is) but he'll definitely hate the physical contact lol. Kaz'll definitely hold her in neutral friendliness at first tho. He's probably going to get along better with Faren tho :)

    And me! I'm so excited!!

  • (All right! Allons-y!)

    It was a momentous day.

Small bands of Arusians came to stare at the assembly of hulking starships gathered on the hilltop, or else to gabble on about the return of the Great Lion Angel, the One of Many, the Voltron. So excited were they that few noticed the Olkari resting in the shadow of the cube-shaped ship, or the Altean sitting uncomfortably close to him. The two of them said nothing, but there was an air of expectancy about them.

    ---

Faren looked out across the gentle slopes of Planet Arus and wondered why it would happen here. Besides the symbolic significance, of course. Not that Arus was unpleasant, just inconvenient. A small planet, several hours out of the way of any major thoroughfare (unless you were using a teludav, of course), the only reason it was on the map at all is that centuries ago, Voltron had first assembled here, on this very spot.

So naturally, the body of people that could possibly vaguely be called an interstellar government had felt it appropriate to reunite Voltron here, to mark the onset of a new dynasty. They had contacted the five apprentice paladins and yanked him, Faren, out of retirement and sent them all to meet on Gazrel Hill.

So far one paladin had shown up, an Altean who called herself Arina. She had greeted Faren with a smile and handshake that turned into a one-armed hug. If he understood correctly, she was to be the yellow paladin. From what he had heard of the yellow lion's favored temperaments, she fit the role to a tee.

Beside him, Arina checked her ticker.

"I still can't believe I'm the first paladin here! I wonder how much longer until the others get here?" she wondered.

  • "I still don't understand why father wants me to be a paladin." Cecil groans exaggeratedly, hand thrown over his eyes in delicate despair as his sister Anise lands their ship just far enough away from anyone to cause physical harm (though a few might not be too happy about the wind ruining their hair). "I can't even pilot a pod, much less a lion." His hand slides down his face and his head falls sideways so he can stare forlornly at Anise. "He could've sent you, at least you can fly."

Anise laughs exasperation at her brother's theatrics. "Well, I'm busy running the company. Besides, this builds character." She gets out of the pilot's seat, making her way out of the control room down to the departure deck. Cecil follows with hurried footsteps.
"I could have run the company," Cecil points out. "And I don't need to build character. I'm perfectly fine as I am."
Anise rolls her eyes. She manually opens the door to the ship, turning to address her brother a final time before she sends him off. "Cecil, I know you're against... all of this, and I know you wish dad had entrusted the company to you." Cecil neglects eye contact in favor of staring pointedly at anything else but her face. Anise sighs. "But I know this is the right path for you," she insists, reaching a hand out to rest on his shoulder.
Cecil looks down. "...And if it's not?" He asks, refusing to look up.
Anise smiles. "Well, then there's always room for you back home." She pulls him into a hug. "Don't miss us too much, and make sure you call every once in a while." Then she steps back into the ship, and Cecil is alone on the outside. She waves to him as the door closes. "Also, I'm taking over your room while you're gone! Hope you don't mind!"
Cecil sputters, straightening with immediate indignance. "You're what!? Oh, so the whole fourth floor isn't enough for you!?" But the doors slide shut before she can answer, and Cecil is left to brood.
"Spectacular," he grumbles and turns around, spotting an Olkari and a vaguely familiar Altean face (those looked different every time though, how could he be sure?) Assuming that's where he's meant to be, he starts heading in their direction.
The sound of another ship entering the atmosphere makes Cecil look up though, and squinting against the sun he can just recognize the universal symbol of an Earth vessel. He rolls his eyes. "Oh, great, it appears punctuality is starting to mean something to them."

    {Gratuitous joke about how every other planet seemed to be in on interstellar communication and interaction except Earth ty}

The ship Kaz takes to Arus isn't fancy–in fact, it's more of a pod than anything else. It's flown by one of the military commanders of NASA's interstellar diplomatic branch, which was kickstarted years ago back when humans first realized there was intelligent life beyond their own in the universe. This commander also happens to double as Kaz's voucher for his election in the original Earth representatives back when apprentices were still being chosen for each of the paladins. It's thanks to him that he's come this far, and that he was able to return to the academy when things fell apart at first.
Kaz sits in the copilot's chair, very much not-copiloting. Instead, he's slouched back against the chair with his arms folded in close and his head tilted back, trying to relax deeper than the vague doze he's caught between. When they enter Arus' atmosphere, however, he's jolted awake, and sits up, staring around and trying to gather his bearings.
"Look alive, Fenwick." The commander says, piloting them to the ground. "You're about to disembark, and I'm not goin' with you." He flicks a few switches on the control panel without looking down. Kaz sits up, yawning and rubbing his eyes underneath his glasses.
"I'm up, sir," he drawls, blinking his eyes back into focus as the commander lands the pod.
When they reach the ground, the commander turns to him before he can get out completely. "Now, you remember why we sent you here, Fenwick."
Kaz nods. "Yes sir, to pilot the black lion and lead Voltron."
"And to show these aliens that Earth isn't as much of a pushover as they think."
    Kaz sighs. "Yes, sir."
He gets off of the ship without further incident, a bag of his few belongings slung over his shoulder. Earth's got a serious superiority complex these days. International relations have flourished ever since everyone realized they had potential enemies on a far more expansive scale than each other. Unfortunately, it's always been human nature to push for more, and the moment word got around that the paladins were looking for apprentices, international space programs were scrambling to find the best candidates they could send. As far as Kaz is aware, there's only one other human among the apprentices–among the paladins, but he's sure she's got a similar spiel from whatever program she worked in. The real message, the one no one's saying out loud, is that they wanted a human to pilot the black lion because they thought it would "put Earth in charge of Voltron," so to speak. But Kaz isn't interested in NASA's desires, even if they were the thing that put him here. For now, he's just going to do his job–and that job is, apparently, to defend the universe.
He makes it off the ship and starts asking around to Arusians, trying his best to find out where he's supposed to go. They're more than happy to help, and soon enough he's heading in the direction of several aliens he's probably already met.

    {Sorry if I took some liberties describing earth's interstellar disposition, but knowing us I feel like we'd try to pull something like this. Who knows, maybe humans are the next conquerors of the universe. :o }
