Briarkit was now five moons old and extremely eager to become an apprentice. She was still a rather naive kit, just dying to become an apprentice, oblivious to what was going on around her. She could be found practicing a rather terrible hunter's crouch by the nursery. The snow crunched loudly under her large brown paws and her tail was stuck high in the air, waving around like a flag. Her siblings weren't around, so she had no one to practice with. No one to tell her if she was doing a good job. With a huff, she sat firmly on her bottom, pouting.

Wasppaw couldn't help himself from letting out a little chuckle as he approached the nursery, his eyes befalling the huffy little Briarkit. "Having some trouble, little one?" he asked warmly as he came up before her, placing down the mouse he had grabbed for his mother and sitting down. He found himself admiring his little sister, marveling with a pride akin to a father's at how big she had grown. She was as pretty as Snowbloom, and seemed to hold just as much spunk and fire as their father, Emberhawk. He wondered if she'd grow up to be deputy someday, perhaps even leader? Either way, he hoped she wouldn't have to grow up too fast. It'd be nice if she could stay forever small and adorable and innocent to the world.

Briarkit's eyes brightened as her ears detected a new voice belonging to her big brother. He was the best big brother she had. There was Pantherkit, and he was pretty cool, but he wasn't around much. Most of her siblings spent their time hidden away in the nursery apart from Frecklekit. It truly was a shame that they weren't around much. But she liked Wasppaw. He was very caring and gentle, and Briar, in contrast, was too proud and fiery to be caring and gentle. She admired him for that.

"Yes! I have nobody to practice with," she whined, jumping to her paws. She stared up at Wasppaw with big green eyes, practically begging him to practice with her.

Well now, how could he possibly say no to that face? "I'd be happy to help you," he purred, beaming happily at the idea of spending some one-on-one time with his little sis and teaching her something new. Not only was this good practice for when he became a mentor someday, but he'd also be the one to get Briarkit started on the path to being the strong and intelligent warrior he knew she'd grow to be! Pushing the mouse away so it wouldn't be harmed while he took the time to practice with his little sibling, Wasppaw got to his paws and positioned himself at the kitten's side, so he could have a better see of her full body, "Okay first things first-" wow, he sounded just like Tatteredpelt! So smart~ "-Show me what you know about the hunter's crouch, demonstrate for me, please," he instructed, though his voice was soft and encouraging.

Briarkit beamed a smile at him as he agreed to help. Then she followed his instructions, lowering herself to the ground, wobbling quite a bit with her tail straight in the air. "Am I doing okay?" she asked breathlessly as she tried to keep herself there.

"Your doing a fantastic job!" Wasppaw said, sincere in that he was proud of her for doing her best. And though there were, in fact, a few itty bitty issues, she had most of it down - He was sure he'd make a good hunter of her yet! "First of all, you need to breathe," he said with a small chuckle, watching as she waddled forward, taking mental notes. "Try breathing in through your nose and out your mouth, it helps regulate your pace and keeps it quiet," he said, before demonstrating the technique himself, "Always make sure your never out of breath when your hunting, 'cus if the prey hears you and bolts, you need to make sure your well enough to chase, especially if your quarry is a rabbit."
Giving her a moment to process the information and try the breathing exercise herself, Wasppaw nodded before placing a paw gently on her rump and pushing it down, "Now, second of all, you need to keep your toosh down and your tail level with the ground - not too close, or you might brush some grass or leaves and alert the prey, focus on keeping it stiff" Wasppaw himself had had a lot of trouble with that part. He'd always instinctively tried to tuck his tail between his legs, which ultimately ended with him tripping over his long fur and ruining the hunt. Thankfully, Tatteredpelt straightened him out before Leaf-bare began, so more often than not he caught his prey.
Wasppaw wondered then who Briarkit's mentor would be. She was such a spunky, eager-to-learn kitten, surely she'd get a good warrior to train her. He smiled warmly, wondering if Thrushstar herself would be up to training his little sis.

Wow, Wasppaw was a great teacher! Any apprentice who got him as their mentor would be lucky. She, too, wondered who her mentor would be. It would be awesome if Wasppaw could be her mentor, but he was just a young apprentice.

She listened intently to his instructions. Then she breathed through her nose and out of her mouth, and it worked. It was much easier to breath this way. Then she felt gentle pressure on her hind, and she lowered her rump, sticking her plumy tail out, trying to make it stiff. The fur on her tail was exceedingly long, and some wispy strands even brushed the ground. Sometimes her tail could be really, really annoying.

"You're a great teacher!" she complimented her brother, flashing him a grin. She felt like a warrior, stalking her prey. As a leaf crossed her path, she got carried away, imagining it was a mouse. Then she pounced, parting her jaws in a triumphant yowl, hearing the dry leaf crack into tiny pieces under her weight, imagining it was the sound of the mouse's spine cracking.

Wasppaw felt his chest expand with happiness at his sister's compliment. He? A Good teacher? He modestly shrugged it off and said with a wave of his paw, "Oh well you know, you have Tatteredpelt to thank for that, these are all his tips and teachings," he purred. For whatever faults his grandfather thought he had, Wasppaw was greatful nonetheless for his teachings. He truly enjoyed learning under his grandpa, and was grateful for everything he was taught.
He let out a proud gasp as his sister made the pounce, crying out a happy, "Thats the ticket!" he got to his feet and padded over to his sister and her 'caught prey'. Affectionately tussling her head, the tom chuckled, "Make sure not to yowl to loudly when you make a catch though, I know its exiting, but you dont want to scare off any nearby prey..." he looked up, and noted a bunch of clan mates gazing at them from around camp, "Or disturb any sleeping clan-mates" he added in a whisper, laughing softly.
"Now, to the most important part of the hunt - what do you do after you make a successful kill?" he questioned, lifting his head and looking down at his little sister, a encouraging smile on his paw. She was already such a quick learner - her future mentor would surely have an easy time with this one.

Briarkit's eyes lit up like tiny suns as her brother praised her, and she felt ready to burst with pride. She purred with amusement at her brother's words. "Okay, I won't. It's just... so exciting!" she chirped.
She had seen a warrior do this once. "Bury it!" she meowed promptly. "You bury it so other animals or cats don't come and steal your kill. And you can't eat it either because the elders and queens must be fed first." She finished her statement with an affirmative nod.

He smiled, nodding, "Im sure it is, and when you catch your first prey, it'll be even more so," he said with a grin, swiping a tongue over her ear affectionately. He, however, hadn't had such a fun time on his first hunt. The idea of taking a life, prey or not, had pained Wasppaw, so much so that he'd almost burst into tears after he tasted blood - and he hadn't even bitten that hard! That moment of weakness earned him a sore nose for a week after his prey - a grey squirrel - had turned on him and slashed out. Still, it could be said that when Wasppaw finally accepted, the looks he saw on the elder's faces when he presented them with his catch...well, it made it all worth it.
And Wasppaw couldn't wait for his little sister to feel that amazing rush of self-worth too.
He let out an impressed whistle at her words, and beamed proudly, "That is true, im glad you know the code," he said, sincerely awed that Briarkit had remembered. But while she was indeed, correct, Wasppaw continued, ",and while burying prey and following the rules is very important, there is one thing you forgot," pawing at the fallen leaf and pushing it forwards so Briarkit could gaze at it, Wasppaw said, "You must always remember to thank starclan for the blessing - no life, not a tiny ant or a giant eagle, should ever be disrespected, as it's with their taken breath that we can live another day," If the warriors weren't the top predators of the forest, Wasppaw also would have wished - should his life be taken - that it be used for the purpose of helping other lives. It would only be fair to assume the same for the mice and squirrels.

Briarkit purred as her brother swiped his tongue over her ear. It felt very nice to be loved.
One thing I forgot? she thought. What could that possibly be?
Ooh, thanking StarClan. Well, since she practically killed this leaf, she might as well thank StarClan. "Thank you StarClan," she whispered, looking solemnly at the crushed leaf. Right now, the naive kit couldn't understand why that was important. But if Wasppaw did it, so would she. Then she had a thought. "Where does all the dead prey go? Do they go to StarClan?" she asked curiously.
