— holland was born in a rather rundown neighborhood to what was considered the projects. her parents june and brayent , they were young when they had her, both unprepared. her father, he didn't last long, only til she was about five years old before he took off, leaving june to fend for herself and her daughter. her family living halfway across the united states, she had no plans on asking them for help and instead, worked nights as a stripper while leaving holland with friends. new men were nothing new for holland to see, ones that june thought she loved. boyfriend after boyfriend, they were all jerks and one even put his hands on holland. the only promising one that came was a lawyer, one who promised june the world. they did move in with him, getting the two girls out of the projects and frankly, thirteen year old holland was excited. already, she was beginning to show signs of depression, and didn't try to handle it. but a year later, he was only the same, keeping hostage of both girls. no one knew since he was nice outside doors, but he turned into a literal devil on the outside. when holland first started dating, it was to a senior her freshman year, someone who had just about as complicated of a homelife as her. he influenced her into handling herself through durgs and alcohol but she found herself much more reliant on the drugs. she started coming home less, going out more, and by the time she was sixteen in her junior year had lost her virginity to this eighteen year old boy. did they have much of a relationship? no, he was no different than her mom's boyfriend, except he didn't abuse her. but she ignored the signs because he made her feel alive. this lasted three years but was put to a stop when holland practically overdosed after breaking up with her boyfriend one night. the off and on relationships, nothing new, but after this her relationship, or whatever it was, ended there. she was able to recover recently over the summer, but in the end she once more feels much more alone than she ever has before.

BRIEF HISTORY Miya moved to America when she was four, her family ending up in a small town near Boston, Massachusetts. Miya was always a good, compliant child, trying to keep her head down like her parents suggested. She struggled with the English language for a couple of years, her words accented and her grammar off, so it took her schools a long time to comprehend that this was actually a highly intelligent child. She shone in mathematics because of this, the universality of numbers something that she could speak through, and soon after through music as well, as she began learning to play the cello at the age of 7. She didn't have an easy time growing up, getting teased for how she looked or spoke. Her younger brother became very sick when she was ten years old, his prognosis dismal and life expectancy short. Though he became better, the cost of the hospital bills put their family into rather severe debt. They've kept the restaurant by the skin of their teeth, but it was difficult. Miya started working when she was thirteen years old at any job she could find - mostly babysitting - and occasionally would compete in competitions, looking for prize money. It was during one of these competitions, a math olympiad, that she was discovered by a recruiter from Badlands Prep, who suggested that she applied. She currently attends the boarding school on full financial aid.

Ga-Eul Lee - mother of Miya and Jae, originating from South Korea. Migrated with her husband 13 years ago to America so that he could achieve his dream of owning a restaurant. She works finances for the restaurant, and while she is very intelligent, she does not speak much English. She is warm and loving, and can be either hot-headed or diffident, depending on the situation.
Min-Gyu Park - father of Miya and Jae, originating from South Korea. Migrated with his wife 13 years ago to America to achieve his dream of owning a restaurant. He is the owner and main chef for the restaurant, and speaks English proficiently. He is ambitious and driven, very inspired by hard-work. He pushes his daughter to be better than everyone, just to prove that she can be an equal.
Min-Jae Park - younger brother to Miya, currently 10 years old, known as "Jae" by his peers. He was diagnosed with childhood leukemia when he was four years old, and while it went into remission, he has begun showing possible signs of a relapse of late, and a doctor's visit is imminent. He is a bright, spontaneous, lovable boy who can make anyone smile in even the worst situations.

— he was born to june and carson harper on on a warm september morning in las vegas, nevada, at precisely 4:52 am. he already had a sister at the time who was two years older than him named genevieve, and the four of them were quite a happy family. they lived peacefully in a suburban home in the large city, and their lives were quite uneventful, besides the usual birthdays and "first times." it wasn't until rosario was about three that his parents started acting... weird. they didn't get along anymore, and they were constantly yelling. it scared both rosario and his sister. his father didn't start calling them all names until a few months later. it was emotionally scarring, but it hurt him even more when his mother would sleep with him or genevieve at night because she couldn't stand being with carson for too long. when he turned four, his dad started hitting him and genevieve while their mother was at work. they were both scared of him. they were so scared of him that they never told anyone, and it went on for years. it wasn't until his father sexually assaulted genevieve (which rosario only learned about later in life, as he had been seven at the time) that their mother finally divorced him. he was put in jail for fifteen years, but rosario dreads the day that he'll be released all the time. he was also diagnosed with adhd when he was eight years old, which explained his troubles at school and why none of his teachers seemed to like him. he started taking medication for it, but unfortunately, he was allergic to the medication, so he couldn't continue with it. this only hurt his grades even more at school, and it didn't help that his older sister had stopped... acting like herself. he went on like this for a few years, but then, when he was eleven, he found his sister lying on her bed, not moving. he saw her empty prescription bottle and knew exactly what had happened. it was traumatizing. and then, when he was thirteen, it happened again, except this time, it was an image he knew would never leave his head: his sister lying in the bathtub with nothing but her bathing suit on, covered in her own blood and scars littering her wrists, a bloody blade lying next to her. he had called the ambulance and she was brought back to good health within one or two weeks, but the memory haunted him for months on end. he would break down sobbing every time he entered the bathroom, plagued by the image of her almost lifeless body. that had been in eighth grade, which was why his mother had decided to send him off to badlands prep for high school. to get away from home and have a fresh start. and while going to the boarding school did help, he never forgot the memory, and it only caused him to develop panic disorder when he graduated from middle school.

— nancy is very EMPATHETIC of other people. she has a STRONG SENSE OF SYMPATHY and is extremely CARING, LOVING, and PROTECTIVE. although this is not always a good thing, because she gets EASILY ATTACHED to others, and sometimes gets a little too CLINGY or NOSY if she notices that they are having a hard time dealing with whatever is going on in their life. she is a bit of a WORRIER, and is constantly ANXIOUS, always worrying about one thing or the other. she's a very STRESSED woman and has been DEPRESSED ever since her eldest son died and her husband left, but she didn't let it stop her from taking care of her youngest, because she is extremely DETERMINED. there is not a person in the world that she doesn't want happy, and she always tries to have an OPTIMISTIC approach to life. no matter how sad she is, she is always HELPING others and, in full honesty, acting very MOTHERLY towards all of the students. she is a very KIND woman, despite being a bit OVERBEARING at times, and she really does mean well. she is quite EMOTIONAL and very emotionally SENSITIVE, and a lot of it is due to her worrying nature. despite all of her flaws, nancy is very GENTLE and PATIENT, and always a very INTELLIGENT and INNOVATIVE woman who simply wishes the world for everyone.

— nancy was born in seattle on a chilly night in april at 9:46 pm to lilah and jeremy romano, who already had a nine year old daughter at the time named marie. nancy was always very quiet and reserved growing up. with such a large age gap between herself and her sister, there was never really any close communication between the two. nancy never really had the chance to ever play with or grow too close to marie, but it never really bothered her too much. without anything to miss, she never really missed the interaction. due to this, she grew to be a very independent learner. she taught herself how to read basic words right before she entered kindergarden (with assistance from her mother), and only continued to excel from there. you could say that nancy was always extremely prone to emotional damage. she was only seven years old when marie died in a car crash, and even though they had never had a particularly close bond, nancy was devastated. the rest of her childhood passed by relatively normally. she grew to be quite the intelligent young woman, and she graduated high school with her diploma, a scholarship, and not to mention, a boyfriend. she married him when she was twenty-two, and they had a son the year after by the name of milo. milo was always a playful and happy kid, and was only ecstatic when he was given a new baby brother named nixon who nancy had when she was twenty-six. life was happy for a while, until milo died in a freak car accident with a drunk driver when he was five. nancy was torn. not too long later, nixon was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and her husband left, not able to deal with it. nancy kept going, and even though she now deals with depression and mild anxiety, she has a great bond with her son nixon, who has now graduated high school, and really appreciates that at least she has someone.

His father, a mechanic, worked at his buddy's shop, and was therefore given leniency to drink excessively without getting fired. Nixon could be considered a golden boy, when overlooking some aspects of his personality, as he gets superb grades, starts on the school varsity football and soccer team, and participates in track as a dual-medalist long distance runner. However, the boy and his father rarely speak for over a few minutes, and there has always been tension surrounding the two. When Nixon's father found out that he was gay by spotting Nix with another boy, the father and son got into a physical altercation, but the situation was ignored by both of them afterwards. Nixon applied to Badlands Preparatory himself, and was awarded financial aid to the private academy, and had attended the school since sophomore year.

He tends to go by "Howie" when around the other teachers and doesn't care whether his students call him it or not. He's a total sweetheart who is found more often than not with a subdued and soft expression of joy on his face. He's extremely mellow and has a calmness about him that he'd like to be respected and heeded as tranquility is the state of mind he functions efficiently in. Without it, he cannot thoroughly think of characters and authors and has been known to get them confused when such a thing occurs.

— Howie is here because he really wanted to help kids understand literature better and knows that it is a harder subject to focus in on. When he was young he had trouble with gramattical and literary errors and so made it a prority to comprehend it as he grew up. It would make him the happiest man on Earth to pass down his knowledge and have someone remember what he taught them and reflect on it.
— Howie loves horses, especially Clydesdales, and keeps plushies of them all around the room. Each one has a different name and he would love for his collection to be added to.

— Howie is a kind guy who does his best to make the right decision and keep his pupils in order. He likes to give them plenty of time to soak in topics and to come to him if they have any concerns or questions. He loves organizing and having his quiet moments because he likes to think back on what he has seen and observed each day. His patience is high because of it and it helps him maintain a healthy temperament. He also adores working on account of it and his mind is never far from his books and the grading he has to do. A workaholic might be the proper term for it. Like everyone, he has his rough patches. He's immensely stubborn and won't shake from one way of thinking unless there is pure and documented information against his opinion. He keeps his problems to himself and because of that he may eventually burst with all the secret anxieties that take refuge in him. Additionally and perhaps lastly, he takes far too much responsibility on himself and blames himself for minor mistakes another person makes. It hurts him and he worries about it for days.

— Howie was brought up in a stable family surrounding in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up with a few siblings so was fine socially. He never had problems and though he only had a small group of friends, was alright and contented with that. He didn't wish big for himself at all. Howie decided in his junior year of high school that he wanted to teach literature and so set out to do so. Countless classics were read over the remainder of his teenage years and by twenty he had sped through Shakespeare, Hemingway, Stevenson, Twain, Orwell, Shelley, Doyle and the list goes on. He got his master's and declined from going higher than that at the University of Missouri before promptly moving to California to be around the coast. He settled in Julian, San Diego for a year as the scenery was gorgeous and the small town feel had been a key factor to him. One day, he had been scanning through the internet when he saw an ad for a job at Badlands Prep. He supposed he could visit Julian again whenever he wanted as the school was focused in California and when he was accepted he briskly packed his bags and moved.
