Eyes. Those of the other interns, sizing me up, wondering something along the lines of "What is it that this girl has? What about [i]her is doctor material?" They lingered on me only briefly before moving onto the next person, and then the next, each time with the same questions flitting like tadpoles in their depths.

I, however, did everything in my power to avoid eye contact as we awaited the arrival of the Attending Physician. The Chief of Medicine, Dr. Bella Randall, gave us the ten-cent tour of our work stations, then left us for the dead with only the vague reassurance that the physician would be with us as soon as he was finished with his patient, and to refer to him if we had any further questions.

I leaned back against the wall, clipboard in my arm, as the others began to chat quietly amongst each other. Tension and excitement crackled like electricity in the surrounding air and, in and out of my own thoughts, I caught tidbits of what was being said.

"When do you think he'll be finished?"

"Who knows? But I hear the guy is a real jack-wagon."

"I hear he caused a resident to leave in tears just last week."

Beatrice Jones, my long-time best friend and a surgeon at the hospital, can attest to the fact that this guy is a total psycho. Violent temper, no patience for slip-ups. Most people can't stand to be around him for any longer than he can stand to be around them, and he couldn't give any less of a shit about what any of them thought of him. Even the Chief of Medicine herself found him absolutely detestable, but he was an outstanding doctor who cared for his patients... so they kept him around.

It was then that I made the mistake of deciding to open my mouth. I straightened my shoulders and leaned forward, across the receptionist's desk behind which I had made myself comfortable.

[b]"C'mon, you guys. I doubt if the guy is that terrible," I said, knowing full well that he was, in fact, as horrendous as they thought. I recognized a spark of hope gleam behind the eyes of some of the other interns, and something about it urged me on. Maybe it was my keenness for being the center of attention, or maybe it was that itch I always got when it came to making people feel better. "I mean, if nothing else, he can't say no if we have a question or an emergency. I figure we'll be like a family here, you know? He'll have to help us out."

As I spoke, I was unaware of the door opening slowly behind me, as well as the man in medical scrubs and a white coat standing only feet away, listening to every word I spoke.

    OOC:
This roleplay will center primarily around my character, a medical intern at Sacred Heart Hospital, and your character, the intolerable, angry Attending Physician who she comes to view as a mentor.

Your character is in charge of overseeing the training of all the new interns, but takes a particular interest in twenty-three year old Regina Foster. Because of her tendency to mentally drift off when being spoken to and her crippling inability to keep her mouth shut, he is annoyed by her at first, and in fact seems to dislike her more than any of the other interns... By the same token, he hovers over her more than any of the others, and she quickly learns to turn to him when she needs help.

Under your character, Regina will be forced to learn things the hard way. Even when he warms up to her, your character's hard shell is not to be broken. He's uncaring and cruel in how he explains things, but he tells it like it is... And with time and experience, the two of them find each other closer than ever expected.

Your character does not require a form unless you want to supply one! All in all, I'm not too well-informed on life in a hospital and will be researching intensively as we go! I mostly got the inspiration for this thread into my head because I am watching Scrubs at the moment, and it's one of the best shows I've watched in a long time!

Will I be able to make it there in time?" Grant's patient had only just vomited into the circular blue bowl provided by the nurses, but she was still worrying over her knitting class. He forced himself to take in a deep breath and exhale it before continuing, a strategy that always worked for him.

Clasping the woman's patient chart in his hands, Grant smiled warmly. "Mrs. Bowford, right now I'm more concerned about your appendix. You might be able to be discharged within the next two days after your surgery, but I can't make any promises. Thankfully, if all goes well, you should be able to attend your knitting class. Just as long as you aren't running around or jumping afterward." The attending physician smiled again, hoping to reassure the woman. Thankfully, her pale face looked more relaxed. "I've paged our very best general surgeon, she'll be in here in just a moment to explain the procedure before we rush you off to get ready."

Just at that moment, Dr. Rachel McKinley quickly walked in. Grant leaned in and murmured a short word about her appendicitis before handing the general surgeon the patient chart. Then he turned back toward the hospital bed. "Mrs. Bowford, this is Dr. McKinley. She'll be performing your surgery. If you will excuse me..." Grant was already late for his first introduction with the new interns and he couldn't waste another moment.

He walked into the intern work-room just as a fresh, blonde woman piped up about the guy not being that bad. Already they had heard the rumors about the guy. Well, to hell with it. Let them be intimidated. But then the blonde continues and Grant puts his hands in his pockets, an amused, demanding smirk placed on his mouth. "I mean, if nothing else, he can't say no if we have a question or an emergency. I figure we'll be like family here, you know? He'll have to help us out."

"Here's the first rule of your internship here at Sacred Heart Hospital - no one has to help you out. We're all paid to be here. If I wasn't getting paid, I would not be putting up with your insulting, brainless, annoying corpses." The doctor took a few more steps into the room, his clear blue eyes scanning the crowd. They lingered on the intern making comments about family. He could address that statement, but he didn't feel like it.

"You all should be honored to be accepted into Sacred Heart. This is an esteemed program. I'm Dr. Anderson, your attending physician. I will be overseeing your training during your internships. This is where you will meet me at the beginning of your shifts every single Monday through Friday."

Grant shifted his weight and glanced at the nurse. Immediately she handed him the list of interns, then scurried out of the room. "I'm going to do a roll call. If anyone isn't here on time, consider them booted out of the program." The attending physician went down the list, calling out the intern's names and marking a check when they responded.

His eyes looked at Regina Foster a tad longer than the others when he got to her name, but he quickly moved on. Grant set the clipboard on the nurse workstation. "Okay. First thing is first, we're going to have a little bit of practice before we head out. I need to assess what you actually retain from school. Each of you has a patient chart on your clipboard. Your jobs are to look over your patient's results from the information and tests you have been given and diagnose them properly. You will have three tries." The doctor looked everyone over sternly for a moment.

"Failure to accurately diagnose your patient after the third try will result in two hours in the work station, with me. I know everyone wants to get out on the floor and find the doctor you have been assigned to for the week, so you better get it right." With that, he nodded for them to begin.[/fancypost][/fancypost][/fancypost][fancypost bgcolor=white; border:none; border-radius: 0px 0px 5px 0px; border-top: 1px solid lightgrey; border-left: 1px solid lightgrey; height: 49px; width: 240px; margin-left: -7px;][fancypost bgcolor=transparent; border:none; height: 30px; width: 240px; margin-left: -15px; margin-top: 5px; text-align: center; font-size: 20px; color: black; font-family: arial; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: 1px;]

Admittedly, she was a touch shaken by the unprecedented arrival of the Attending Physician. Although she hadn't outright witnessed his entrance, she wouldn't have been shocked to hear that he had appeared, fangs bared, in a cloud of black smoke.

[i]"Here's the first rule of your internship here at Sacred Heart Hospital-"

It had taken her from the beginning of the statement to the end to scuttle back around the desk and take shelter amid the safety of her peers. She held her clipboard to her chest and her chin in the air, as if she hadn't experienced brief heart failure a few seconds prior.

Even though she had anticipated him from the second she stepped foot into the hospital, Regina was taken aback by Dr. Anderson.

He was expeditious in his introductory speech, getting to the task of the day with nothing more than that which needed to be said beforehand. Had it been Regina up there, she decided, she would have tried to lighten the mood with some dumb quip about not being "afraid to get your hands dirty."

Then again, she had two nephews to attest to the fact that she had never been the most brilliant teacher.

Pay attention, or else you're not going to have a clue what to do. The misty wisps of fantasy obscuring Regina's gunmetal blue eyes lifted as she honed back in on the doctor before them.

Sometimes, at moments like this, she wasn't the least bit certain how she had gotten through med school. Then she remembered her grade-A work ethic, and was all better.

The more Regina heard of her task for the day, the most excited- and nervous- she became.

A patient! Not that she hadn't observed and diagnosed her fair share of patients over the past couple of years, but this was the real deal. She was a real intern at a real hospital! An intern who, with any luck, would eventually claim residency in the sector of internal medicine.

"Failure to accurately diagnose your patient after the third try will result in two hours in the work station, with me."

Yikes. Can you say "no thanks?"

While the rest of the interns scattered to the wind, eager to stay under the radar of the intimidating attending, Regina paused a moment to scan over the patient chart she had been provided.

Mr. Gideon Dwight was a sixty-four year old man who, last year, had come in after having an apparently minor stroke. He had dropped a drastic amount of weight between that visit and now, and was plagued by constant fever and fatigue. A recent ESR test showed discomforting levels of inflammation.

A thoughtful, otherwise untranslatable sound emanated from Regina's throat as, still looking over the information, she spoke up.

[b]"Room three-eleven... Is that way, right?" Venturing to glance up at the attending physician, Regina pointed with her pen to the hallway to her left.

    OOC/
okAY I'LL THINK ABOUT IT, BUT I WANT TO FINISH SCRUBS FIRST. I just made it to Season 5 even though I started the show, like, last week whoops.
ALSO. Her patient has Temporal Arteritis, in case you needed to know!
