• The forest was filled with the chirping of birds high above the apprentice. Russetpaw felt her whiskers twitch as she stalked forward carefully, observing a mouse scuttle about a few fox-lengths before her. A sharp crack sounded and the mouse looked upward at the she-cat, eyes filled with fear, and hurried off before she could even try to catch it.

Russetpaw sighed, flicking her tail in frustration. The brown and white she-cat had made her way stealthily out of the camp earlier to attempt to catch some fresh-kill and impress her mentor. Her ears flattened to her head as she cursed herself for even trying. That had been the third mouse she'd let slip through her claws.

The sound of a cracking twig led Russetpaw to turn sharply in the direction of the sound.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=none; bordercolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; width: 400px;font-size:8pt;line-height: 150%;]had the twig not alerted russet to her tag along, then the laughter that followed definitely would have.

adderpaw stood there, shaking his head to himself as his chest heaved in teasing guffaws. how unskilled do you have to be to let such an easy catch get away? once his breathing regulated, the masculine taunted, "go back to moss balls. at least those don't run away."

following russet had been a great idea. three missed mice and, if she continued her pathetic little hunting trip, probably a lot more. she'd probably catch more trip ups and failed landings than she would actual prey. how could the clan rely on someone like this. cats were starving and russet was just scaring prey off with her awful skills.

  • The she-cat narrowed her eyes, but said nothing, nodding in agreement. Russetpaw knew she was lousy at everything, and so why should hunting have been different? She felt her paws twitch uncomfortably at the thought of returning to camp with nothing in her jaws. She couldn't help but feel like there was something she could do. She puffed out her chest, putting on a more dignified facade. "If a moss ball saw your mug, it just might." Russetpaw meowed.

/ooc: im p sure adder is salt in cat form lmao
also that reminded me that i need to add that to my tags,, so thank you friendo

  • "I can't help but agree with Russetpaw," Hornet meowed as he approached. Clenched in his jaws was the tail of the mouse that Russet had just lost. He'd been surprised to stumble upon it fleeing so blindly, but apparently these two had chased it away. Made sense - he'd flee from Adderpaw, too, if he were anyone else.

The warrior narrowed his eyes at the duo, dropping the mouse by his paws for the time being. "Where are your mentors?" The rule about apprentices staying in camp without warriors wasn't too strongly enforced, but tripping up Adderpaw was worth bringing back a semi-ancient rule.
• Russetpaw looked down at her paws guiltily. "I... came out here alone." She confessed. "Or, at least I thought I was alone." The apprentice quickly added, her eyes narrowed at the other apprentice. She had never been one to openly show a dislike of other cats, but if there was one thing she couldn't stand, it was rudeness. Her bitterness soon faded back into the guilt she had previously harbored, given the gravity of the situation she'd found herself in. "...I was just trying to help." Russetpaw mewed quietly.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=; width: 375px;]"I'm right here..." Mossflight's groggy voice called out as the deputy made her way out of camp. "What's going on here... Russetpaw? Some of us are trying to sleep... help with what?" a yawn interrupted her words.

  • Russetpaw nearly jumped at her mentor's voice. She took a moment to think of how long she'd been out and realized it was likely reasonable for the she-cat to be awake. The amount of cats around her made her highly uncomfortable. Large numbers of cats meant more affected by the curse she was sure she had. Regardless, she meowed quietly in reply, "I wanted to hunt so I could help the clan... and impress you." The last words were nearly inaudible.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; borderwidth=0px; bordercolor=; width: 375px;]Her gaze softened. "Oh... you could have just woken me up and asked to hunt, you know..." She would have grouched at first but been fine in the long run. They really could use the prey. "You don't need to impress me, you're a skilled young she-cat who'g going to make a great warrior, possibly even leader, one day. Don't risk going out at night with all the dangers to ruin that..."

  • Russetpaw looked at her with wide eyes. "I... didn't think about that..." She mumbled, averting her gaze. She doubted she would become much of anything in her future, but she dared not to say such. She had been used to sneaking out of camp as a kit, but it often led to trouble for her and whoever had found her. The she-cat thought briefly of her mother, her eyes clouding with sorrow. She wouldn't have wanted Russetpaw to sneak about in such a way and the young cat knew it.

Snapping back into reality, she dipped her head to her mentor. "I'm sorry. It won't happen again." The she-cat promised, although she wasn't certain it was a promise she could uphold.

/ ooc: sorry i keep changing my tags. omo;; i'm not used to using them. i haven't really roleplayed in traditional thunderclan since before it was called traditional thunderclan, and tags weren't widely used back then.

    - HALFSTEM
Halfstem came out of the bushes, surely causing some ruckus, narrowing his eyes at the other cats. "Listen, I might not be the senior of y'all's, and neither am I that accustomed to the rules, but shouldn't you youngsters be at camp?" He was patrolling nearby camp earlier in order to get some exercise, and heard meows coming from not too far away, so the stocky short tom had headed there. He paused his gaze on Mossflight for a moment, before returning his eyes to the apprentices again, chuckling. "But I suppose it's alright since you attracted this much attention, so no worries. You even caught these ol' ears."
    [/fancypost]

  • Tanglepaw was alerted to the situation outside of the camp. She listened in, curiosity getting the better of her. She would have to teach Russetpaw a thing or two about stealth, she thought with an amused twitch of her whiskers. The older aprentice decided, right there and then, that it was now her duty to teach Russetpaw all the dos and donts of apprenticeship; things that she certainly wouldnt learn from her mentor Mossflight.

  • The apprentice looked up, startled by the sudden appearance of the elder. She dipped her head respectively, still surprised. Russetpaw didn't think she would attract such attention from slipping out to hunt, and if she had, she likely wouldn't have done so to begin with.
• [fancypost bgcolor=none; bordercolor=transparent; borderwidth=0px; width: 400px;font-size:8pt;line-height: 150%;]hornetflight's appearance was enough to make him hush himself. the task took an incredible amount of self-control but he was already stuck with cleaning the elders' nests until his ceremony. and he just knew that it wouldn't stop there should he open his mouth out of turn again.

really, with how much effort he was taking to do this, hornet should have rewarded him.

then the peace shattered when halfstem presented adder with an opportunity to insult the elderly once again. "i'm surprised your ears even still work."

turning to mossflight, he snorted softly. "six moons and leaving by herself. she probably doesn't even know basic defense. maybe keep a better eye on your apprentice before she gets hurt."

  • Spottedpaw had followed Tanglepaw, recognizing the bitter tone of Adderpaw before even seeing the ginger and white apprentice. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, simply flicking an ear irritatedly. So, it seemed Russetpaw had snuck out. She shot the younger apprentice a sympathetic glance from where she stood beside Tanglepaw.

  • Tanglepaw growled at Adderpaw's comment to the kindly old tom, halfstem. Had this flea brain ever even heard of respect before, or even kindness and compassion? What apprentice dared insult a clan elder? Her cream and ginger fur bristled angrily, but she bit her tongue. She had been chastised once already for brawling with the cocky apprentice.
