//tw for severe depression and extreme homophobia (is that a trigger? idk but i'm putting it here). Also for v/ old school asylums that mistreated patients.

Henry often had nightmares. They had come less frequently now that he was taking the anti-serum but it didn't mean they never came. While Hyde could not overtly communicate with Jekyll for the time being, he was still capable of manipulating Henry's thoughts. At least, Jekyll thought he could. He had come to believe that Hyde was the sole source of his grief, even though he had experienced such feelings long before Hyde had existed. He couldn't bring himself to believe that another thing was wrong with him though, especially after the conversation with Hawke and Atticus. It had occurred to him in that little meeting that he may be... attracted to men in a way that was more than platonic, an idea that both exhilarated and frightened him. He wanted nothing more than to profess his feelings on the streets but at the same time he was terrified to do so. Would it be another thing wrong with him? Would it be something Hyde would twist on him? Would it be worth the risk? What if Atticus had decided he didn't... he didn't feel anything for Henry after he spoke up? What would he do then? Would he be ostracized here like he would have been in his time? No, with all these thoughts swirling in his mind he could not stand to think that he also may have some form of depression or anxiety. Even if he was now willing to diagnose others with it after having done proper research in modern medical books, he could not admit that to himself. Whether it was true or not would forever remain a mystery to him and would not be an answer he sought after.

    Tonight his nightmares returned.

It didn't seem like a nightmare at first. It was so pleasant, to be with John and Mary again. He was just sitting and having the tea with the two of them. Then Mary spoke.

"Henry, John, we need to talk." Henry remembered this conversation. He had replayed it so many times in his mind, wondering if he had done something wrong. Suddenly, he became very aware of his surroundings. This had happened before. This was his old house. This could not be real. The thought made his chest feel as though it were clenching. How he wished he could be here with them again. He wished he could see them just one last time but it was not to be. Still, he didn't want to risk startling himself from a lucid dream. If he was aware, then so was Hyde and, despite the anti-serum, he was worried his other half would try to break through. The thought of what nightmares Edward had caused him sent terror through every bone in his body. No, he couldn't wake Hyde.

"Mary-" He would begin but before he could finish his sentence, the Scotland Yard would barge into his home and he was quick to hop to his feet. He tried to tell himself this wasn't real. This wasn't happening. The policemen advanced quickly towards him and roughly grabbed both him and John. "No! Stop! Talk to Oswald Carew, I'm friends with your the head detective! I'm not a criminal! Why aren't you listening?" Despite himself, panic was starting to build and he looked frantically to John. When he did so, it was plain to see that his friend had tried to fight his way out and now the officers were being a bit more rough with him than they were with Henry. "Stop! Please, stop! Don't hurt him!" He cried in panic. He now began to twist in the officer's arms. He didn't care if this wasn't real. He couldn't wait this out. He couldn't watch John get hurt.

"We aren't here to arrest you, Jekyll. Calm down," Oswald's voice came and Jekyll relaxed immediately.

"Thank goodness. What's going on then? Why are your men restraining me in my own home?" Certainly this was all a misunderstanding.

"Recently Mary has come to me with some... distressing claims about both you and John. She says that the two of you have been in a relationship since you were very young, perhaps in your teens. She also says you have spoken before of various obsessions and thoughts of your own death. You need to get better, Henry. We're just taking you to a place you can get better."

"The asylums? You know what happens there! We've talked about it! That's why my research is so important! We need to prove that these people are still people. That they can be helped in ways that won't harm them! We talked about this and you agreed! Where is your father, Oswald? Sir Danvers was rather interested in my work and he-"

"Don't worry, good doctor. You'll get better here." The scene had shifted to a completely dark room and now it was not Oswald's voice but one very similar to his own, although it seemed to hold a presence quite different from Jekyll's mild-mannered appearance. Hyde. Jekyll knew this wasn't real but he couldn't tear his eyes away when he saw a spotlight fill the room and John restrained on a table with electrotherapy equipment strapped to him. "No! No! Hyde, stop! Please! Hurt me all you like but please! Please don't make me watch this!" He was practically sobbing and he pulled desperately against Hyde. Soon, though, his counterpart disappeared but the force holding Jekyll back did not. It had been replaced by the cutting ropes that he usually appeared in during his nightmares. They dug into his wrists, ankles, torso, arms, and legs but he didn't care. He needed to get to John.

Soon, Hyde reappeared and turned on the machine. John was screaming. Jekyll sobbed uncontrollably as he tried to reach his friend. After a few moments, Hyde stopped.

"You want me to stop making you see John get hurt, Henry? Fine. I think it would be a much more effective lesson if you watched that new love of yours for a bit."

The scene before him shifted and now Atticus was the one strapped to the table. Suddenly, panic spread through Jekyll. Atticus wasn't dead. This felt so much more real. He screamed the word 'no' repeatedly until he felt as though he couldn't yell anymore but Hyde had turned the machine on and Atticus was screaming. Jekyll clawed desperately as his restraints. He couldn't take this.

Henry woke up gasping for air and pain spreading through his body. He could feel Hyde clawing his way through his mind, trying to gain control for the night. Jekyll couldn't allow that. He forced himself to his paws and stumbled towards the table that held his anti-serum. He quickly reached forward, grabbing the nearest syringe and sinking it into his arm, allowing the cool liquid to enter his bloodstream. There was one more awful burst of pain, causing Jekyll to let out a terrifying scream before he slumped over. Soon, his breathing slowed and the pain began to fade. He took in one breath and started sobbing in the next. He would not be sleeping that night.

  • I have now considered the fact that part of Jekyll's motivation in creating HJ-7 could also have been a result of his own depression. The blatant explanation he gave was that he wanted to separate good from evil but when presenting it to the board of governors he states he would test it on patients in an asylum. Given that my version/interpretation of Jekyll strongly opposed the way people were treated in asylums, this would imply that he believed his serum would end their mental illness as painlessly as possible. Of course, given it was designed to technically separate evil from good which would imply he thought of his depression as a form of evil. It could also explain why he initially became addicted to the serum. Hyde doesn't have his depression and therefore allowed him a release from his own mind.
