Perhaps moving away from her mother hadn't been for the best. While she'd learnt plenty of street-smarts, how to catch her own food, fight for herself, make a shelter, all of that important survival jazz, she'd never learned any sort of book smarts. She'd believed that because she could read lips that she could also read, of course, that wasn't as simple as she'd thought. Jupiterkit wasn't able to write either, she didn't know the order of the alphabet and she sure didn't understand numbers.

And, being as she was, this frustrated Jupiterkit a lot. The ginger-furred tabby was hunched over a book, a children's book nonetheless, with pictures and big fonts, and still she was unable to put the words together. Her ears flattened against her cranium in frustration, her teeth gritting. Part of her was tempted to cry but she wouldn't, that would be weak of her. Jupiterkit wasn't weak. She was mad though, really mad.

"I don't get the point of these things! What does any of this even mean?" Flicking through a few more pages in the hopes of finding something she understood, Jupiterkit only ended up hanging her head in frustration. She was useless. She didn't know herbs like her mother and half-brother, she didn't have the right amount of physical strength to fight without getting in the way, she couldn't read or write and hell, she couldn't even hear properly!

Everything was a mess. And all because of this stupid book.

Like the smoke filtering from his mouth his voice was a husky and rasped chuckle as he stepped forward, lone blue eye narrowing in on the child and her frustration.
"My dear, you don't simply look at the book hard enough and it rearranges itself for you to understand. It's like dealing with others, you can't always expect them to be as you want; instead you adapt to them. A compromise~"
The sleek white tom on light steps moved to sit next to Jupiterkit, places a paw on the book so she's unable to turn any more pages.
"It's also the same as walking, you crawl first. You are attempting to run a marathon before you're properly suited to take a step." His smile was serene and he plucked the joint from his lips to put out on the ground near him, tail flicking dirt over it to bury it entirely.
"Would you like some help?" Iconoclast had learned to read at a young age against his mother's protests. She believed it useless folly, the sort of bullshit proclanners wasted time on when he should be more focused on honing his claws. He had done it to defy her, but also because he wanted the stories. Ico was always an impudent child, but he had a sense of ambition and a will to dream not quite common among his clanmates and the ability to escape to another world in the folds of a page appealed to him greatly. He wanted it more than he could explain, so he taught himself. It had been a struggle to do, learn on his own, hide his actions from others so they didn't interfere or worse-go running to his mother.
But he did it eventually and when he left BloodClan he had stopped reading. Had stopped needing the escape, but sometimes...sometimes it was nice to look back.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; border: 0; width: 400px; text-align: justify; font-size:12px; color: white; font-family: arial;]Porcelainkit hadn't began learning to read herself, but she was too busy entertaining the idea of becoming the new leader of WindClan to really care. She'd been bounding around camp, bothing warriors and apprentices alike, frowning at the lack of kittens the clan had to offer. Jupiterkit had recently returned, and while Porce was excited to get to know her, there was something about the other kitten that made her shy.

She approached the two slowly, her eyes peeking at the other female curiously. She had a book in front of her (and Porce didn't understand why anyone would want to waste their time sitting in front of paper!), and the young kitten peeked around the advisor. "Whatcha doin'?" she asked nervously, drumming her little toes against the ground.

The ivory ragdoll wasn't much of a book freak; in fact, she seldom read books, but she rather enjoyed them when she did. Unfortunately she didn't seem to have time on her hands, for most things... but that didn't matter. The femme padded slowly up to the scene, her head tilted in interest as he lavender gaze scanned across the small crowd which had gathered around Jupiterkit- a member she hadn't had the pleasure of meeting yet, but still... she didn't mind. "W-What book is that?" she asked, tilting her small cranium. "Um, I'm D-Daisypaw, by the way."

[justify][size=8]In IronClan, and all of the kingdom besides, every highborn child learned to read and write. Being the son of a lord, Greypaw had been a part of that group. He had possessed this knowledge since he was about four months old, and prided himself on it. He held back a chuckle at Jupiterkit's frustration. She sure was fiesty. The chocolate tabby made his way over, his tail swaying behind him. "We can help teach you - it's much easier when you aren't doing it by yourself." He actually wasn't sure that it was even possible to teach yourself to read or write. How could one just magically understand letters and their sequences?

[fancypost borderwidth=0px; width:362px; font-family: georgia; text-align:justify][sub]Holydove watched her daughter proudly despite that she was struggling and getting frustrated. She could remember when she was struggling to learn how to read when she was first promoted medicine apprentice many months ago when Maelstrom was still the medic. She'd collected books on herbs and studied them countless hours. Slowly but surely she became better at reading. She had confidence Juperkit would do just fine as well. [b]"If you'd like help, I can teach you honey."
the rabbit hummed softly, touching her nose to her daughter's head. "And I know everyone else here would be willing to as well. What book are you reading?"

[justify]Like Juniperkit, Lusa didn't know how to read. She didn't comprehend letters and numbers and words, and couldn't be able to connect them properly. She supposed reading and writing may be useful if you wanted to communicate without the use of vocals or telepathy, but she still simply didn't get it. She couldn't put the pieces of the metaphorical puzzle together. It was frustrating, to put it.

So when she spotted Juniperkit reading a book, she would amble over, cocking a head in interest and awe. "You know how to read?" She would ask incredously. A pause from the black bear. From the looks of it and Juniperkit's frustration and reaction at the book, probably not, but she couldn't help but ask. "At least, do you understand some of it?"

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; width: 350px; background: transparent; font-family: helvetica; font-size:11px; color: white; text-align: justify;]Smoke? Was there a fire? Turning her head around to face Iconoclast she tipped her head curiously to the side. "But-" Jupiterkit grimaced briefly, so she'd been staring at this book so long for nothing, "Adapt to it? How do I do that?" Her green gaze seemed to follow him curiously. She wasn't sure she'd met this stranger before and he acted sort of... oddly. He was different to the sort of person she was used to. "He-" She'd been prepared to shout as he places his paw down, assuring that she would stop flicking past the pages at such a rapid pace.

Jupiterkit's ears began to burn in embarrassment, "I have to crawl... first?" Her question lingered briefly, he meant that she needed to start off somewhere easier right? Somewhere that someone with her lack of talent would be able to read. That seemed surprisingly reasonable. Watching as she flicked away the smoke stick in his mouth and buried it, Jupiterkit bit back a brief grimace. "You'll really help me?"

Porcelainkit was easily recognized from Jupiterkit's joining. She'd seen the other kitten around but they didn't really interact as much as Juniper would've liked. She wanted friends around here but perhaps her feisty attitude was scaring them all off. That wasn't good. For a brief moment, her face scrunched up at the thought before a loose smile spread across her lips. There was no point taking out her frustrations on others. "Porce," She greeted warmly before gesturing toward the book in front of her, "I'm trying to read, it's not working out too good so far." The child huffed in frustration.

Daisypaw, she'd seen the other femme around but so far hadn't had a good chance to really introduce herself. Well, now looked like her chance at least. "I'm... not sure," Jupiterkit sighed briefly. It probably seemed completely ridiculous to not even understand what she was reading but you could be sure that the kid was trying at least. She always could've completely skipped learning how to read altogether. "It's nice to meet you Daisypaw, I'm Jupiterkit, pleasure," The girl giggled as she introduced herself with a brief grin.

Jupiterkit's ears perked in curiosity as she heard Greypaw begin to talk, tipping her head so that she could see him she pouted briefly. Asking other people for help wasn't something she often enjoyed but everyone seemed so eager to help her. It made Jupiter surprisingly happy. "Thank you, that'd mean a lot," she nodded her head. It was true, this really did mean a lot to her, having her clan mates offer a helping hand in advancing her further.

"Mum," The girl always seemed excited to see her mother, her lips twitching into a brief wide smile as her mother's nose rested briefly on her head. "Thank you mum," Jupiterkit hummed, it really was a good thing that she'd returned here. "I, well, I'm not sure but... it had puppies on it so I just picked it up." Jupiterkit admitted, her ears heating up in embarrassment. What? Puppies were cute. Sue her.

"Ahhh-" Jupiterkit turned her head upwards to view Lusa, her ears heating up further at the bear's questions. Seemingly having noticed her frustration she'd changed her question around a little more though that only made the kits ears burn hotter. "Well, I mean, I understand that it has puppies in it?" Jupiterkit coughed briefly at that, not wishing to dwell on the fact that the pictures were the only thing she could actually understand.

Ooh, books. Milktea definitely liked books. Not to read, though; the lynx liked to look at the pictures in books. Wasn't that reading, too? She supposed that learning to read would be a good thing, but like Jupiterkit, she had ended up getting too frustrated and going back to her normal way of reading.

"Puppies are cute!" Milktea said in a cheerful tone, looking at the pictures of different puppies in the book. Cherviltea was a dog, wasn't he? So then... at some time, he looked kind of like this? It was hard to imagine — a tinker and babyish Cherviltea, without the prosthetic wood thingy with all of the flowers. Maybe she'd ask her adopted father sometime. What he was like when he was younger. After all, it had to be somewhat similar to her own... he had mentioned before that he was also an orphan, or at least, didn't know what had happened to his parents.

Oklahoma could read. She wasn't outstanding at reading, she wasn't terrible at reading, she just simply could read. She didn't enjoy reading, it wasn't a hobby or a passion, but she didn't hate it or despise it with a passion. If she needed to read a book or maybe found one with an interesting plot, she would, but she wouldn't really in her free time. The light brown feline learnt how to read as she grew up, her parents always handing her little books to help sooth her hyperactive mind.

The Irish girl could hear the cries of frustration, the confusion, and she could smell the scent of her fellow clan-mates, so she decided to walk over and see the situation herself. Once she saw what was going on and how everyone was helping, Oklahoma felt guilt sweep through her body in waves. "I'm sorry lass, but I can't help ye read, my gas voice would throw you off," she explained.

[justify]Lusa nodded slowly at Jupiter, not sure at all what to say. "I see." She responded after a moment. The black bear herself enjoyed books with much pictures in it. The words, she didn't understand, but the advisor could usually make out a story alone just by it's illustrations. That's how observant she had become.
