Falling leaves fell from the trees above, colors of red, gold and brown drifting on the gentle breeze as autumn slowly arrived to the small village. White wisps of clouds floated lazily in the blue sky, but there wasn't enough to block out the sun. It was almost high noon, and the day was warm. A lanky black feline was laying under a tree, his bright green eyes widened in disbelief as he scanned a paper he held between his paws. He was shocked to hear that the neighboring kingdom, this village's enemy, had a new ruler. And that new ruler was this cat's best friend. George the II, crowned prince and son of George the I and Elizabeth. Although, he had not seen the arctic fox since he was little, since the war had begun, but he still considered George his best friend. Was that silly of him? He wasn't quite sure. He recalled the days where he had snuck out to meet George underground, he had become quite adept at navigating tunnels because of those secret meetings. They had played together and shared their hopes and dreams with each other, forging a strong bond between them that could bring either tremendous joy or tremendous pain. But George's father was greedy and ruthless. He launched an attack on the village in hopes that he would be able to claim it as his own territory. He had caused many unnecessary deaths, and he had also caused his son to drift away from his best friend. And now George was the new king. The black cat didn't know whether to be happy for his friend, or concerned for what the outcome would be. Invisible brows knitted with worry, he jumped when he heard a voice behind him. A very familiar voice. "Well, from the looks of it, you found out." The lanky tom scrambled to his paws and faced the one who had spoken, a large arctic fox with a sad smile on his face. His black ears drooped, his tail dragging the ground as he took a step forward. "I did. A friend told me about it." He hesitated before he continued, eyeing the fox warily. "Why exactly are you here?" Upon seeing the cat's suspicious gaze, the canine glanced away, his own tail lowering. "I came to see you. I guess, after my father died, I felt like things could return to normal between us. But now I realize that things will never be normal." The black tom lowered his green gaze, forcing back tears as he spoke in a wavering voice. "So, are you saying that.. that we are no longer friends?" Letting out a long sigh, the arctic fox shook his head. "No, I'm saying that we can't meet in secret like we used to. But, you are welcome to visit my kingdom whenever you wish." Before the black cat could say anything, he took a step back, giving a small smile before turning around. "Goodbye, my friend. Come and visit me soon." And with that, the fox was gone, leaving the cat alone again. Heaving a sad sigh, the cat collapsed and forced back his tears before whispering a single word. "Goodbye."
