    I remember the basics, but not much other than that. I have a memory problem, so if I don't keep up on something that memory turns to dust (for example, I took French for 6 years and barely remember how to form a sentence after a year of not taking it).

(:

  • [fancypost borderwidth=0px; font-size: 8pt; line-height: 12px; width: 350px; text-align: justify;]It was for me too!

    I have two ways of starting this out. ill put them both in spoilers for you to look at

    One

    Two
  • [fancypost bgcolor=transparent; border: 0px solid black; width: 349px; text-align: justify; color:; font-family: georgia; padding: 0px;]Just a little more! (:

    Y is the definitive male chromosome, however.
    o is for black factor
    O is for red factor.

    So since the red factor is on the gender allele, they could cover pretty much any color, but here we always assume them to carry one black (or blue).
    OY BB Dd aa (male red tabby)
    OO BB Dd aa (female red tabby)

    Of course, don't forget that they will also carry whatever color their partner is.
    Another really confusing thing that usually trips up most people is that the solid form of the red factor is called a tabby. But they are genetically solid (Red tabby for dense, cream tabby for dilute). It is ONLY if they are a TYPE tabby that you assume the agouti gene active.

    ex: red TICKED tabby, cream CLASSIC tabby

    Otherwise, they are solid.

    red factor and black factor are co-dominant, meaning you will see both colors if they are together. (Oo = tortie)
    Now, males are either red factor or black factor, because their second HAS to be a Y to be male. So you cannot get male torties unless there is a genetic deformity. If you ever encounter male torties when solving litters, you must tell them that their cat can only pass one factor. But, they must carry that factor for the rest of their lives in that body.

    Females, on the other hand, require two o's, so you can get a mix of one red factor and one black factor. So all torties in real life are female (tortie is short for tortoiseshell just in case you didn't know). There is a tabbied version of tortie(s), and that is torbie(s). Torbie is not short for anything to my knowledge.
    I tend to look at torties as a whole different set, because you can have tortie/torbie anything. Just four differences:
    black = tortie
    blue = dilute tortie
    brown tabby = torbie
    blue tabby = dilute torbie
    Everything else is color tortie (or torbie).
    ex: lilac torbie, cinnamon tortie...

    A calico is a tortie w/ white, and a torbico is a torbie w/ white, in case you ever come across those names when solving litters.

    When solving a litter, the father is always on the left (father x mother). This matters now. And you'd need a separated section for the males and females if applicable.

    One last handy little guide thing before I set you up with a bunch of litters:
    BLACK FACTOR FATHER:

    RED FACTOR FATHER

    In short, the males are whatever their mother is.
    * = when I say "tortie" I mean torbies if applicable as well.

    Would you like more or to go on? I figured we could go over Piebaldism and Dominant white next before reviewing tabby types/tabby modifiers then onto silvering (:
