Okay. So I was thinking that we could modify the plot slightly (you know, the one I found), so that, instead of being born with the birthmark or tattoo or whatever, every teenager gets one at the same time, in a big group gathering by the town. So, once a year, the entire town meets and that years group of eighteen years olds, as their way of proving that they'd matured and turned to adults, would stand in the front, and the town leader or whatever would invite them forward, and each would go into their own little room and get a practically-unique tattoo right behind their ear- on the left for boys, right for girls.
I was thinking that we could start before the ceremony? And instead of being adopted into the family, the two kids were next door neighbors or something? Yeah. Does that make any sense?

“really, dumbass?"
EDEN hated that he knew she was excited. Everyone always believed that she was, truly, one-hundred percent uninterested in what the rest of her female classmates were giggling about that week- when Jake got a new haircut, when Tony lost twenty pounds and started going to the gym and got really, really hot, when Maxon threw the massive party for his birthday and everyone got totally wasted. It was a lot of stuff surrounding guys, which didn't surprise her at all.
And, honestly, she usually was pretty removed. There was no point in caring about the guys in her grade- unless she got paired with one, which she really, REALLY doubted, she had no future with any of them. The parties were stupid and everyone was in more pain afterwards from the massive hangovers than anything else, and the town fairs just needed up turning into a massive makeout session, and she was definitely not going to participate in that. She usually even hated her birthday and the revelry that came with that.
Usually.
In her defense, this one was different. This was her eighteenth birthday, and she couldn't help but be relieved, especially this year, that she had been that month early, that she had been so premature, because, if she had come even three days later, she would have missed the cycle for this year, and that would suck so hard. But, no. Maybe she had to be in an incubator for two weeks after she was born, but she was turning eighteen before the Birthday Party, and that means she got her tattoo. This year.
And he knew she was excited but, honestly, was she surprised? They'd been friends forever. He knew more about her than she did herself, and she was sure the inverse was true, as well. Everyone knew they were going to get paired togehter- it just was. And she could have been more upset about it. Sure, he was a dumb*ss, and a clutz, and had been really, REALLY fat for a few years when he was little, but he was her best friend and spending your life with your best friend could be a whole lot worse. And, besides. He was happy for this birthday, too, because if she had been born at the right time, he'd have to wait a whole extra year until he got to meet his soulmate for the 'first' time.
