at a young age, palatino follows his father around closely. he's quiet and shy, stuttering over his words and struggling with a terrible lisp; speaking seems difficult for him, and he's behind when it comes to his development. nervous and fearful of judgement, he walks with his tail between his legs, a gentle kid that seeks comfort from his father at all times. without a familiar face nearby, it's likely that he'll break out into panicked sobbing and whimpering, immensely dependent on the people he knows in order to function properly.

he's easily attached to objects, and doesn't seem particularly intelligent as a young child. he seems pretty detached from reality, not in the sense that he's spaced out, but in the sense that he simply doesn't understand things like others do; he seems to draw just as much comfort from objects that smell like people as he does from the people themselves — give him something as simple as a stick that smells like his father, or a tissue, and he'll be content enough to even fall asleep on it. if spooked by something in the presence of such an item, he'll try and hide behind it, no matter how small it may be.

palatino is entertained by the little things. the sound of ripping paper, bubbles, etcetera. he's also incredibly affectionate; he needs warmth, and thus has a habit of knocking against people and trying to burrow against them. he starts to generalise his father's scent to shadowclan in general, by about five months old, and will burrow against anyone that smells like his clan. he develops a fear of spiders, too, after one drops on his head, and also a fear of snakes, after one bites one. though he doesn't often speak actual words, he voices his emotions in other ways, relying on wordless cries and body language. despite his childhood setbacks, he's a trusting kid, gullible and wide-eyed in his youth. he's the sort of child a parent would do good to monitor constantly, for his own peace of mind.
