But even though he had left it behind, the people there would never stop looking for him. He could never return. Why would he even want to, you might ask? Well, there was one person, one single, very important person to Arthur that he had left behind that night. Ever since yesterday he hadn't been able to shake the thoughts of the tabby out of his mind. He had come to the lake to try and clear his thoughts... but now, he was starting to remember. The night that everything changed. ... He sat in his apartment in front of the window, a Joy pill in one paw. He was watching all of his clanmates walking by each other on the cobble street below, saying muffled greetings to each other. Arthur hadn't been doing what he should. No, he hadn't. He hadn't been taking his joy very much, only taking maybe 4 pills a day compared to his usual 10 a day, and the effects had started getting to him. More specifically, he had started questioning why they even took Joy. Look at all these people. They were all hyped on joy. Did they even realize that they lived in a run down, old city? The streets were covered in filthy puddles and people would just jump in them like they didn't care. They got their prey from an old garbage dump. People's family members would die, and they weren't even that sad. They were ignoring their problems, putting on happy facades. That was what Arthur believed. That's why he had decided that he wasn't going to be fooled anymore. No, he didn't want to fake how he really felt. Instead, he would face his problems, like a real person. With a growl, he would toss the Joy pill away, watching it roll underneath the couch. Just then, there was a knock at the door. "Arty? It's me, Henry." Arthur turned his head around sharply, a worried expression on his face. Oh god... no, Henry! Not now..." |
| He couldn't tell Henry about this... he'd... he'd be furious! "Arthur? You there?" Came the orange tabby's voice again, a little bit more worried this time. He couldn't ignore him. There was no way around it. "Y-Yeah, come in!" He said, stuttering. Henry would then push open the door and walk in, his bobby hat still upon his head. "You had me worried there, Arty! I thought something happened to you." Henry paused, tipping his head at Arthur. "What's the matter, Art? You seem... off. You been forgetting to take your joy?" Oh no, oh no... he could already tell? That fast? Oh dear god. He was a bobby, but he didn't think that Henry would have found out that fast. Arthur quickly shook his head. "N-No! No, not at all! S-Snug as a bug on drug!" He would say, faking a smile. Henry's green eyes narrowed from behind his mask and went silent for a few moments, causing Arthur's nervousness to rise even further. "Ha, you nearly had me fooled there for a second! I really did think you were off your joy. C'mon then, let's go eat." The puffy orange tabby said, shaking his head before turning and starting to head out the door. "Phew..." Arthur would mutter quietly before following Henry. Halfway down the hallway, Arthur was suddenly plagued with a disabling migraine and he would nearly collapse, falling against the cream wall and sliding down it. "Arty? Arty!" Henry would turn and say his name, running back to him and sitting in front of him, placing his paws on the oriental's shoulders. "Art! Are you okay, w-what's going on?" He said, worry making his usually velvety voice crack. Arthur couldn't respond, only shaking his head, breathing heavily. Henry's ears flattening against his head, and he went silent once more, eyes widening. "A-Arthur... you haven't been taking your joy... have you?" He said, his voice quiet. "N-No! H-Henry... please, it isn't like that... please..." Arthur whimpered. "That's why you've been acting strange." Henry said, louder this time. He stood up now, starting to walk backwards towards the alarm on the wall a few feet away. "W-Why would you do this, Arty?" "Henry, don't. Don't do this. P-Please... I can explain." Arthur said, staggering to his paws and starting to slowly follow the tabby. "No! Stay where you are... y-you... you downer!" Henry stammered, tears in his eyes. "I... I don't wanna hear your lies! I don't wanna hear what you have to say." He growled. "I thought we were friends..." "We are friends! Henry... please believe me..." Arthur said, his voice fading as he got more and more upset, blue tears starting to fall from his brown eyes. Henry stood beside the alarm now."... I'm sorry, Arthur." The orange tabby choked out. Then, he would reach up and pull the alarm, causing an earsplitting siren to blare throughout the building and the city. "HENRY!" Arthur screamed the tom's name as the tabby ran away down the hall, shouting. "DOWNER! THERE'S A DOWNER IN THE BUILDING!" Panicked, Arthur fled back into his apartment, slamming the door shut and racing over to the window. Oh god.. oh god... what was he going to do? Frantically, he scanned the street below. People were running around in a panic, screeching the word 'downer'. Quickly, he would turn and run around his apartment, gathering a few things in a pouch before stopping near the door. "Sparky! Where are you!?" He hissed the lizard's name, causing the gecko to come out from behind the plant by the door and climb onto his shoulder. "Okay... I'm gonna do something risky here... you're going to have to trust me." With a little grunting noise from the lizard, he would nod and open the door, running away from the stairs and toward the end of the hallway. "THERE HE IS! GET HIM!" Came the yells of the bobbies behind him. As he began to reach the end of the hallway, he saw a large window. He could hear the heavy pawsteps of the bobbies behind him. "Oh god, please, let this work!" Arthur prayed quietly, running even faster now toward the window. Sparky would quickly scuttle into his pouch, sensing the danger ahead. Then, just as the bobbies began to gain on him, he would slam through the window with a huge crashing noise, flying into the tree outside the window and falling through it's branches with several grunts. He would land on a bush underneath the tree, lucky for him, and as soon as he had determined he was alright and had no major injuries, Arthur turned and ran through the crowds of panicked people in the streets, continuing through the city entrance and on through the forest. He would only stop when he was sure he was far away from the clan's border line, flopping down under a single tree on a hilltop. Once he had rested for a bit, he was able to process everything. Arthur was a bit surprised he had survived the fall through the window, but the most important thing was he had made it. But... Henry... Henry had been so upset... and now.... now he would never see the orange tabby ever again. He could never see him again. "Henry... I'm so sorry... so sorry... I never even told you..." He whispered, feeling tears well in his eyes and begin to fall onto his paws. And that was how Arthur remained for hours, lying there and sobbing uncontrollably. ... When he had come back to reality, Arthur had blue tear stains running down his cheeks. "H-Henry..." He whispered the tom's name once again, letting out a sob. When would this misery end? [ summary: Arthur has another flashback to when he escaped his last clan.
