so, if you haven't already gathered, this thread is heavily based off the naughty dog game the last of us. the plot itself will be fairly simple in this thread. twenty years after the outbreak of an airborne fungal infection that has caused most of the population to transform into bloodthirsty monsters and turned most of the rest into corrupted killers, a small group of survivors fight to find shelter and carry on in this world. things will get a little more complicated once it is discovered that one of the group is immune to the infection, and the group will have a very difficult choice to make.

the infection - whilst the cause of the infection is unknown, its effects are obvious. not only does it cause extreme aggression, it also causes a human to lose everything that made them themselves, and, in the long term, increases strength and durability, making the infected more difficult to put down. the infection itself is spread in two ways: through airborne spores and through the shared bodily fluids of an infected individual, most commonly through a bite.
runners - runners are infected in the early stages of their infection. they are fast, strong and extremely aggressive, but relatively easy to kill. out of the types of infected they bear the most resemblance to the people they once were.
stalkers - rarely encountered away from water sources, stalkers show more ferocity than runners, though are slightly less fast. the most notable physical traits that define the stalkers are the distinct croaking noises they make, the beginning of fungal growths on the head and face with only one eye left, the development of pseudo-echolocation, and their discretion upon spotting a victim at distance.
clickers - clickers are infected that have suffered from the infection for a number of years. due to the fact that fungal growths have covered their faces, they are blind and instead use echolocation to hunt their prey. they are extremely strong and impossible to fight off with one's bare hands, but if one remains silent they can be avoided.
bloaters - bloaters are people who have reached the final stage of infection and whose bodies have been destroyed beyond recognition by the fungus. they are relatively rare but extremely dangerous, as the fungus that surrounds their body acts as an armour, making them very hard to kill, and they are capable of hurling sacks of harmful mycotoxin at their victims. however, due to their slow movements, they are rather preditctable, though if a person finds themselves in the grips of a bloater, it means certain death.

i. first and foremost, this is my thread and i expect you to act respectfully and kindly towards not only me but others on this thread.
ii. nothing is to be taken from this thread. the fancypost belongs to marsy and the plot and intro are from the last of us. everything else is mine and mine alone.
iii. it is absolutely not a requirement that you've played the game, as long as you at least skim read the information i provide so that you have some context.
iv. please don't join this thread if you don't plan on committing, as i worked very hard on it.
v. please make characters diverse when it comes to age, race, gender, sexuality and personality. (emphasis on the personality because i've seen a lot of similar characters floating around recently).
vi. this thread will contain a good amount of gore and violence, so take that into consideration when deciding whether to join.
vii. this is the advanced board, so i do expect to see a good few paragraphs with correct spelling and grammar in each post. this also applies to your forms, which i expect to see reflecting your writing skills.
viii. leading on from the previous rule, i would like for you to use an advanced fancypost for your roleplaying posts.
ix. please please please do not leave anybody our of plotting. this sucks for anyone and i don't expect it to go on in my thread.
x. i recommend creating more than one character, as the possibility that your character will die is very real in a thread of this nature.
xi. please keep everything in the thread as realistic as you can - the world ended twenty years ago, none of your characters will have conditioned hair or access to fresh fruit.
xii. i don't want to see generic or overused faceclaims like selena gomez, dylan o'brien or alycia debnam-carey.
xiii. though immune characters do exist in this universe, they are obviously very rare, and i will be allowing one character to be immune. i will decide who this character is and you must request it in your form.
xiv. there will be relatively few characters under twenty-five, due solely to the fact that this is set twenty years after most of the human race was wiped out, so take that into consideration when creating your characters.
xv. have fun, seriously. i had a lot of fun making this thread and i hope you guys have fun taking part in it.

speaking of iain's face, this sun-damaged canvas seems to just scream rough. it is clear to the inexperienced eye that his nose has been broken at least once, and a deep scar can be seen at the edge of his mouth, hidden by a layer of unkempt tawny scruff, that he is adamant on letting grow. this only leads us onto his hair, which is rather thick, though he does keep it short when he has ow opportunity to cut it. his eyes seem to be the weakness in his face; they can be seen to be a delicate dodger blue, and are often partially midden by thick, frowning brows. scars: iain's body is littered with scars of varying size and severity.

KEY EVENTS IN HISTORY: iain was one of three children born to mary and john moretto, along with his twin, andrew, and younger sister of three years, allison. never particularly excelling in school, iain always felt inferior to his brother, who seemed to succeed in everything - education, sports and general popularity, whilst iain found himself hanging out with what his father called the 'wrong crowd', and dependent on alcohol from the young age of fifteen.
iain was sixteen when the virus began to spread. his city was one of the first to be hit, in the dead of night. iain awoke to the sound of distant screaming, and his father hurriedly waking his brother and sister up. upon evacuating the building, iain's sister and father were both bitten, and his mother had her throat ripped out by a crazed infected woman.
the rest is really very standard - iain and his brother found themselves swept into quarantine zones and shuffled around the country by the military for the next couple of years until the military started to fall. it was then that iain and andrew were recruited into one of the many groups of bandits that now seemed to rull the abandoned streets of america. they were responsible for smuggling supplies, guarding wherever the gang were hiding out and scouting for infected. it was in this gang that iain met melanie, whom, five years later, he would com to call his wife, once the two had abandoned the gang and attempted to make a life for themselves, finding home in what used to be an outlet village that they had locked up along with andrew and his significant other, jane.
things did, however, get a little more complicated when jane found herself pregnant. things were fine at first, but when jane required more and more medicine security at their fortress became more lax, and it became harder for andrew, melanie and iain to defend it. eventually, the infected found themselves in. the group escaped, but jane's water broke, and she gave birth to a girl, raegan, dying in the process.
things were definitely hard at first. having to look after a baby that wasn't his own and with andrew distraught over the death of his wife, iain certainly had to work hard but he managed. that was until a group of hunters attacked and andrew and melanie were both shot dead. iain was able to escape with the baby, but only just, and he found himself badly wounded with a young baby to look after. he found the group only a few years later, and became their unellected leader.

rae's skin was once paler than you could find, but years spent outside in the sun have blessed her with a rather beautiful, albeit rounded, tanned face, upon which a smattering of freckles can still be seen creeping across the bridge of her ski-slope nose. most of rae's features seem to follow this trend: round and youthful.
rae's eyes are certainly brown, though their exact shade leaves much up to debate - in some lights they appear to be almost golden in hue, whereas in darker conditions they seem to approach a shade of brown far closer to the colour of dark chocolate.
as for rae's hair, it really is rather a boring story. she tends to keep this thick, umber mess in a ponytail due to its unmanageable nature, leaving only her bangs - which she adamantly refuses to grow out - falling over the left side of her face, and often casting a shadow over her left optic.
