In the hills, far enough away from the city, a small camp of tents was set up to give refuge to those who had come out on the wrong end of the war. No one remembered what they had been fighting about anymore. All anyone knew now was hunger. Food was scarcer than it had ever been, especially for those who lived out of the city. There was only one way for them to feed themselves and it was often dangerous enough to frighten people off. Over the years since the end of the fighting, many had died of starvation, being too afraid to venture into town in search of scraps. Even children were suffering from malnutrition and sickness that came with it. This was the Refuge. Shaun Roman sat in her tent in the center of camp. Her light brown tent was hung over a branch of the only tree within a hundred yards. The camp was rather tightly knit and a few people shared tents. This didn't apply to the young leader of the refugees, a young woman of just 25 years old. She slept alone most nights. She was too busy trying to save the people she guarded from starvation and abuse to be concerned with a potential love life. She had more important things to worry about than her own happiness. As the sun rose high in the sky, Shaun checked her watch. It was almost noon, meaning a patrol would be heading into town. She figured she could take a couple of the guys and herself. They could all hit their respective food stands and if worse came to worse, she could act as a distraction while they got the heck out of dodge. "Wouldn't do it if we didn't absolutely have to..." she mumbled to herself, drawing in the dirt by her sleeping bag. She sighed and brushed her short brown hair out of her face and sighed. If they didn't need so much for everyone to eat, she would go herself. Instead, she was endangering two of her people's lives, yet again. A nagging voice in the back of her mind demanded to know who gave Shaun the authority to decide whose life was worth risking and whose wasn't. It was a crappy choice for one person to make. "Pass around the danger so no one feels left out... No children or women with children..." She marked out a few small spots she'd drawn in the sand, resting her face on her hand. Planning was hard work, but she'd been at it for hours. The time was now. She would need to gather her patrol soon. If they could hit the stands at the guards' bi-hourly rotation, they could reduce the threat level significantly. They'd just have to sneak in, rob the city half blind, and sneak out. Piece of cake. Pulling herself up off the ground, she poked her head out of the tent, blinking at the sun. The nearest tent was about four feet away to the left and another to the right. An intricate pathway had been laid throughout the camp, making it relatively easy to travel without stepping on someone. Directly in front of her tent was a fire pit and some logs they sat on during meetings and gatherings. Staring at the skeletons of burned kindling, Shaun tried to remember the last time they'd had a gathering. Food, singing, chatting... All of these were things that had been missing for a while. "Maybe tonight..." Shaking her head, she came out of her tent the rest of the way, slipping on her cheap wire sunglasses she'd picked off a guard. Pulling her hair up into a weak ponytail, she stretched and headed towards one of the tents. Someone was about to get some news to ruin their day...
